I don't think a player can become a RFA from a contract signed to finish the year off, but I don't know the bits and pieces of the rules.

A player who has signed for the reminder of the season is a RFA if has been in the NBA for 3 or less years.

The confirmation for Pops :

“Pops has come in and given our team a much-needed shot of energy,” Bryan Colangelo, the Toronto general manager, said. “And what we have realised is that while Pops is by no means the complete NBA player, he is clearly someone who deserves to play at the NBA level.

“Let’s just say that at this stage I am inclined to extend the qualifying offer so we are in a position to control the cards in free agency.

“That way, if Pops obtains an offer from another club, we will have the option to match it. If he gets an offer we don’t have the appetite to match, then we can let him go.”

Meh, Pops is a dime a dozen type athlete. He shot 35% with the Raptors and didn't block shots. He rebounded at a fantastic pace but he has plenty of shortcomings that make him a borderline NBA player.

Europe or nothing for Pops.

Not NBA quality.

I'd rather not have to bid for him.

Pat Ewing Jr. should be healed up soon. Good energy, more versatile offense.

There are plenty of guys in the NBA that have lasted in the NBA with very limited offense as long as they can rebound at a high rate, bring energy, run the floor and play above the rim.

Not saying he is a great player, but he does change games positively with his hustle, rebounding and running the floor off of the bench. He had a nice stint in Toronto.

Would you rather have Ewing in camp than The Gist?

rebounding is maybe the most important thing to winning. someone who can rebound very well as well as finish around the basket area >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> a 3 point shooter only such as bonner, mason.

POPS would bring exactly what we need which is Rebounding, Energy, and low post pounding/finishing so if he can be had for a decent price, DO IT.

Would you rather have Ewing in camp than The Gist?I haven't seen Gist play enough this season, but my perception is he's probably better suited to play the 3 in stretches than Ewing. So I'd go with Gist if I had to choose.

Ian should be good next season, so I think he'd work fine.
