The Spurs have only one move to improve[younger/more athletic] that doesn't require another team's cooperation. Buy out Tiago Splitter's contract and make him an offer he can't refuse! He starts with Tim as the PF. We can then get rid of Bonner or bring him off the bench. The Spurs can then address SF--- getting anyone who isn't just a 3 point shooter. A year from now if we are still talking about getting "younger and more athletic" it will be too late. Signing Dice or Sheed is a mere bandaid. Next year I think Manu has to start at the 2. A starting team of Tim, Splitter, Tony and Manu + anyone would be formidable. A bench of Hill, Mason, Mahimni, Thomas + someone would be an improvement. The bottom line for the Spurs is that if they can't make run at another title by the 2010 season then it will be too late. By 2011 Tim will be 34, Manu 33 and Tony will be looking elsewhere.
The future is now!

The bottom line is that there is a Spurs Think Tank forum.

We've been talking about the team needing to get younger and more athletic for about 2-3 years now. It's waaaay overdue. It shouldn't have taken a first-round exit to come to that startling realization.

But it invariably does. That's human nature unfortunately.

Just think how different this team looks if a few things had happened...and I will purposely ignore Luis Scola in this post

2003 - Jax decides to sign that 3 year deal and then an extension after that
2004 - we draft Chris Duhon instead of Beno
2006 - trade Duhon and Rasho for Charlie V. and Bonner
2007 - we draft Marc Gasol instead of Marcus Williams

We would not have had to trade Barry to Seattle for Thomas, and thus we would still have our 1st rounder this year.

2009 Draft
1 - G/F Sam Young - Pitt (Bowen's defensive replacement)
2 - SG Danny Green - UNC (another perimeter defender)
2 - G Milenko Tepic - stash away Euro
2 - C Slava Kravstov - stash away Euro

2009-10
C - Gasol, Ian, Bonner
PF - Duncan, Charlie V., Gist
SF - Jackson, Bowen, Young
SG - Mason, Manu, Green
PG - Parker, Hill, Hairston

2010-11
C - Gasol, Ian, Splitter
PF - Duncan, Charlie V., Gist
SF - Jackson, Young,
SG - Mason, Manu, Green
PG - Parker, Hill, Hairston

Wouldn't you have to offer Tiago a rookie contract?

T Splitter is not the answer!

As it concerts our bigs, I would be happy if we land Dice. Oberto should be on his way out, the rest will be decided during the summer. Let's hope Ian averages 15 and 10, otherwise we may have to keep Oberto, Bonner and KT.

All the Spurs can offer this offseason is a rookie scale contract. Next summer they can offer a contract as large as the max (IIRC). Splitter won't be joining the team next season.
