my computer got fried in a storm recently. it still turns on, but nothing runs. like it just sounds like a motor turns on, but the hard drives dont run or anything, so nothing shows up on the monitor. it just sounds like its idling. what should i do? is my computer completely fucked at this point? i had a lot of shit i wanted to get off my hard drives.

Damn, sorry to hear that. It might be your video card though, you might wanna take out your hard drive and plug it in to another cpu, either internally or through an external usb enclosure.
Of course, if you have any spare video cards around, that would be an option too.

if your hard drive is going bad, some computer places can retrieve everything off of it for you. Unless you have a lot of embarrasing stuff on the drive, that is.

As said above, there's many places that will get everything on your hard drive for you.
Try messing around with your video card.

do you usually hear your hard drive?
unplug the hard drive from power turn it on
a bad hard drive will not stop the monitor from turning on though

if you buy a new computer you can hook the hard drive up as a slave drive and get the data off your self and save $$$$$$$$$$$$$$

My guess is your drives are probably ok. Like ducks said, your motherboard or power supply most likely took the hit. I would get an external enclosure and try hooking the drives up to another computer if you need something now.
If you don't do your own computer work, have someone take a look at it. If it's the power supply, it will be a quick fix unless you have one with some shitty nonstandard design. Replacing the motherboard can be a messy if you can't get the same model you had originally, but if you can't and get all the data you want off one of the drives, you can run a clean install of your OS and all your other programs.

Just pour some Tussin on the motherboard. If that don't work rub some chicken and waffles on it.
