SLAM contributor J. Gamble hears from a close personal friend of Rasheed Wallace’s that unless Sheed gets $8 million to play next year, he’s going to retire.

http://slamonline.com/online/nba/2009/05/sheed-to-retire/

Just a rumor for now, but considering all the topics about the Spurs potentially signing Wallace, I thought I'd post this in the Spurs section.

I can't see anyone paying $8M for Sheed

Sheed has earned more than $140M in his NBA career. If his only motivation to continue or not to play is some money, it's sad.

if Wallace wants 8 mil Spurs wont sign him ... he's baiting the Spurs though because he knows he's probably a piece ( or maybe even the piece) that would put them over the top ... if what the article says is true , he's put himself at a ridiculously high price to begin with , but it's an unreasonably high price for the Spurs to pay because it would also put them over the cap ... if it didn't put them over the cap , than 8 mil for a one year contract i think might be worth the risk ...

Exactly. I would think at this time in his career his aspirations would be for another title.

I'm not sure he actually means it. Once he realizes nobody will pay him that much, there's a good chance he'll just sign with whoever gives him the best shot at the title.

Reunion of Wallaces in Cleveland.

this is great, it effectively puts him out of reach for the Spurs, I like Sheed but the Spurs must infuse younger legs into the team at any chance they can get.

Damn what a head case. He seriously looked so bad in the playoffs this year. This will make us spend the MLE in a better way hopefully.

i think this is a good sign, cause if hes willing to retire, i think hes willing to take on the minimum, meaning its not about the money. its about his happiness. so if we can somehow get him motivated to play for us, hes not gonna ask for a lot. just my initial reaction though.

It's the bolded part that you guys miss. Hell, if all rumors were true, then Duncan would've already become Merlin The Magician, King of Orlando.

This may or may not be true, but IMO...the numbers, especially in this economy, are going to be much lower.

Ditty

hope he comes actually, but of course not that price or even the MLE

why? we need some attitude and heart in that locker room espically from others not named tony parker, tim duncan or mau ginobili and someone to speak up in locker room if the spurs are struggling, and no one seems to care, which it looked like this season that everyone was going through the motions, and waiting till manu could come a nd save the day but he didn't and looked what happened.Pop never called out his team from the horrible defense this year besides on the sidelines or maybe in film session who knows.I can sense wallace could be annoying but would understand to say the right thing to his teamates when they are struggling. Look what he did in detroit, he took those guys to the finals 2 years in row and the ECF every year because maybe when they lost he spoke up, and showed heart that he wanted to win. Mcdyess has never shown that, and never will.

Million or Retirement? (http://need4sheed.com/2009/05/sheed-says-8-million-or-retirement.html)
by: Natalie Sitto

A small snippet from Slam (http://slamonline.com/online/nba/2009/05/sheed-to-retire/) made quite a splash and as we know the “close personal friend” route can never be confirmed.

“SLAM contributor J. Gamble [making his debut with us next issue] hears from a close personal friend of Rasheed Wallace’s that unless Sheed gets $8 million to play next year, he’s going to retire. If that’s true, we’ve probably seen the last of Sheed in the NBA.”

It was a buzz on local sports radio yesterday as well as chatter I heard from Sheed fans via email. I’m with Detroit Bad Boys (http://www.detroitbadboys.com/archives/2009-05-04/rumor-sheed-wants-8-million-or-else/) on this one, if 8 million is the true price tag you have seen the last of Sheed in a Pistons uniform (although I didn’t see him coming back either way).

Dave Dial (http://blog.mlive.com/fullcourtpress/2009/05/rumor_rasheed_wallace_wants_8.html) with his expertise of the Salary Cap over at MLive also weighs in:

“As for the $8 million dollar price tag, that will be tough for Rasheed to get next season. The Mid-Level Exception was set at $5.585 million for the 2008-2009 (http://members.cox.net/lmcoon/salarycap.htm#Q19)season and is expected to decrease next season. So teams that are over the salary cap can’t offer Rasheed the $8 million he wants, even if they wanted to pay him that much.

There will only be a handful of teams that have cap space this summer. OKC, Memphis, Portland, Detroit, Atlanta and Minnesota (http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/insider/columns/story?columnist=ford_chad&page=09FreeAgents-Insider-081113&action=login&appRedirect=http%3a%2f%2finsider.espn.go.com%2fnba %2finsider%2fcolumns%2fstory%3fcolumnist%3dford_ch ad%26page%3d09FreeAgents-Insider-081113) will all have significant monies under the salary cap.

I think you can rule out Portland and Detroit, for obvious reasons. I doubt Rasheed would want to spend his last year or two playing for Memphis, OKC or Minnesota. The losing and having no chance at winning a Title would get to him too much. That would leave only Atlanta, which would only have the cap space required if they renounce Mike Bibby and let Marvin Williams and Zaza Pachulia walk.

Which leads back to Rasheed deciding to just retire, or maybe the Pistons would include Wallace in a sign and trade deal with a team that is over the cap. The Spurs, Mavericks, Cavaliers, Bobcats and Celtics have all been rumored to be interested in Wallace. If Rasheed wants a one or two year deal at $8 million per year, it probably wouldn’t scare off all of those teams. With the summer fast approaching, we will know for sure if this rumor is true or not.”

Reach after reach. Keep insulting me instead of bringing a fresh take, it's what you do best.

But lets go back and look at this, what the hell, I'll take the bait from this troll.

Hill is good and will get big minutes next year.

Mason is a choke who missed open shots and is an unknown.

Gist is a tweener whos a mediocre player

Hairston is a d leaguer

Mahinmi is never healthy and a total unknown, most likely a stiff.

Sanikidze is a second round goofball euro who will never come over.

Javtokas is a primadonna no offense big man who sucks and is never coming over

and Splitter while the best of the bunch, is a 100% uknown if he's coming at all.

SO AGAIN.

Where are alllllll these young players that the Spurs HAVE to go get?!

Lol I like how some Spurs fans thought he would sign with the Spurs for veteran's minimum.

Sheed is crazy though. No way he's close to being worth that. At this point, he's not even worth the full MLE, unless maybe it's the MLE for only one year and that's only for certain teams.

He must be smoking something if he thinks he'll get that much money at this age..
I bet the Pistons will let him walk this year.
There might be some truth to Wallace wanting to play with the Cavs, so might reconsider
and take a pay cut to play with them.
