Howard, Bryant headline 2008-09 NBA All-Defensive First Team (http://www.nba.com/2009/news/05/06/defensive.team/index.html)
By Official Release

NEW YORK, May 6, 2009 -- Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard, winner of the 2008-09 Defensive Player of the Year Award presented by Kia Motors, and guard Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers headline the NBA All-Defensive First Team, the NBA announced today. By totaling 55 points overall, including 27 First Team votes, Howard edged Bryant (53 points overall and 24 First Team votes) as the leading vote-getter.

Also selected to the All-Defensive First Team are forward LeBron James of the Cleveland Cavaliers (47 points), New Orleans Hornets guard Chris Paul (36 points) and Boston Celtics forward Kevin Garnett (35 points).

Howard led the league in rebounds (13.8 ppg) and blocks (2.9 bpg), becoming only the fifth player to lead the league in both categories in the same season (Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, L.A. Lakers, 1975-76; Bill Walton, Portland 1976-77; Hakeem Olajuwon, Houston, 1989-90; Ben Wallace, Detroit, 2001-02). Howard and the Magic held opponents under 100 points 54 times this season -- compiling a 43-11 record in those games.

The NBA All-Defensive Second Team consists of center Tim Duncan of the San Antonio Spurs, guards Dwyane Wade of the Miami Heat and Rajon Rondo of the Boston Celtics, and forwards Shane Battier and Ron Artest of the Houston Rockets. Duncan has been selected to the NBA All-Defensive team 12 consecutive seasons.

The voting panel consisted of the NBA's 30 head coaches, who were asked to select NBA All-Defensive First and Second Teams by position. Coaches were not permitted to vote for players from their own team. Two points were awarded for a First Team vote and one point was awarded for a Second Team vote.

Chrissy Paul? GMAFB. Oh, but he gets a lot of steals right? Yeah, GMAFB.

As long as they're giving a first team spot to a broken down KG who didn't play all spring, I'd have like to have seen Duncan there instead so they could put a true center in the second team's, y'know, center spot. Though neither was even close this year, IMO.

What a fucking joke these lists are.

Chris Paul wtf?

Why do they incorporate how good a player is offensively when coming up with the teams? Shane is a better defender than everyone up there other than garnett and dwight.

He is coming back from a really bad ankle injury and started coming back into form just earlier this month.

Last year he was top 3 in dpoy voting but couldn't even make the first team. Sad thing the NBA is.

This!

Other than Howard none of the other guys really deserves to be on the All-Defense first team. Kobe played some of the shittiest defense in his career this year, and as good as LBJ was, his defensive importance is nowhere close to Battier's. And KG didn't play almost half a season.

But the most ridiculous is CP3. The guy is actually a bad one on one defender, guys can easily drive on him. Rajon Rondo, Heinrich, Kidd to mention a few are all MUCH SUPERIOR defenders than him. It's absolute bullshit.

Im not sure why some have a problem w/ James. His defense has been really good this year, on the ball and off the ball.

CP3 simply does nto belong. His on the ball defense is pretty bad. he can't help it, simply lacks the physical tools.

Rajon Rondo belonged on 1st team IMO.

^ Exactly, as good as LBJ has been on defense this year, he doesn't come close to matching the defensive work, night in and night out that a Battier, Artest, or even Iguodala, does. Sorry, he completely deserved the MVP, and I might go along that this should be his second, but there are other forwards whose defense is much more vital to their team than LeBron's is.

This list looks right to me. We think of these guys as scorers and forget how good these superstars are defensively.

When Kobe/DWade/LeBron want to lock you down, you stay locked down.

I mean seriously, how many times do you see LeBron's guy score on him? Or how many times has Kobe's guy scored on him? Kobe plays alot of help defense, that's about the only time his man scores on him.

I see Battier and Artest's name coming up.... Kobe averaged 28 points versus Battier and Artest this year, that's 1 point more than his average. Brandon Roy lit up both Artest and Battier for 27 points during the first round, 5 above his average.

Duncan's defense was good this year, it wasn't great. KG's a great defender, he missed the last part of the season though. I guess that one's a toss-up.

KSeal
05-06-2009, 04:25 PM
This is such a crock of bullshit, Kobe, CP3, and KG should be nowhere near first team. Kobe plays about 5 mins of actually defense a game and gets burned backdoor about 30 times a game. CP3, are you fucking kidding me? KG was injured for basically the whole second half of the year. This shit is a joke, guys simply got on the first team because of their names.

LeBron, on being picked for the All-Defensive First Team:

It was a big goal of mine to become a better defensive player. I decided to take a little more onus on that end of the floor. It's humbling and a great feat for myself because I really enjoy that side of the floor. I thank the coaches for seeing that I picked up my game on that end. It's humbling.

It's all about pride. I just take pride on that end of the court. I'm just as locked in on that end as I am on the offensive end.
