Kobe Bryant and Phil Jackson are big names in the NBA, and they say the league needs to alter its approach to flagrant fouls. Neither Bryant nor Jackson believed Ron Artest’s type-two flagrant foul was so severe. (NBA executive vice president Stu Jackson agreed, predictably downgrading the foul to a type-one flagrant foul after reviewing the footage.)
Bryant, whom Stu Jackson ruled committed a type-one foul on Artest in Game 2 based on video review, described the recent rulings on flagrant fouls as “all over the place” and “silly.”
“It’s something that must be adjusted,” Bryant said.
Bryant said Artest’s hit on Gasol was “not even a flagrant (type-)one.” Gasol didn’t agree with the referees’ assessment, and neither did Jackson.
“As far as malicious intent, I have to disagree,” Jackson said. “They overreacted a little bit.”
Asked if the league needs to re-evaluate the flagrant-foul process, Jackson said: “Yeah, they have to.”
