This forum needs a good trivia thread...
I'll start things off with some who am I trivia.
In a single season I lead the league in ERA, Strikeouts, k/9, h/9, K's to bb and adjusted ERA...not only did I not win the Cy Young when I did it, I didn't even finish in the top 5 in the voting.

Ok while waiting for the confirmation...here's some more trivia...
I am a pitcher who is a multiple 20 game winner who at various times in my career lead the league in ERA, complete games and shutouts and am among the greatest pitchers in baseball history in career ERA and winning PCT. I am arguably the greatest pitcher in World Series history due to my undefeated record and several other WS pitching records I have held.
I also once lead my league in Fielding PCT, and not as a pitcher.

correct answer. When he made that call though it was when the Rays were shitty during his rookie year and I don't think he ever expected to last in the big leagues as long as he has. I think he was making his 2nd start against the Indians at that time. He was my good friend's roommate in college, then he moved in with Manny Burriss who plays for the Giants

Hoyt Willhelm?Incorrect.
He invented one of the knuckleball grips, which allowed him to throw it sidearm.
Three-time All-Star -- twice as a starter, once as a reliever. Broke in with the Cardinals but biggest game was with the White Sox when he clinched the AL pennant. He came into a 4-2 game with one out and the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth and induced a double play on the first pitch. :hat

BTW:
Nolan Ryan.
George H. Ruth.
You are correct on both of these. Very good.
Nolan Ryan - In 1987 at the age of 40 Nolan Ryan turned in one of the greatest seasons by a baseball pitcher in history, leading the NL in:
Strikeouts - 270
ERA - 276
K/9 - 11.68
H/9 - 6.55
K/BB - 3-1
Among other categories yet failed to finish in the top 5 in Cy Young voting due to an 8-16 record caused by a bad bullpen and virtually no run support.
Babe Ruth - Ruth ranks 12th all time in winning PCT for pitchers( 671%) and 15th all time in ERA(2.28). In various years he lead the AL in Complete Games in 1917(35), ERA in 1916(1.75) and won over 20 games in 1916(23) and 1917(24). He also sports an undefeated record in the World Series(3-0) and for many years held the record for consecutive scoreless innings in World Series play(29)(and still holds the record for consecutive scoreless innings by a lefty). In 1919 he lead all AL outfielders in Fielding PCT(996%).

I was strictly an off-field doubles hitter until I changed cities and my new team changed ballparks and until I made a conscious choice to pull the ball as much as possible, morphing into a prolific home run hitter. Oh, and as a matter of pure coincidence, around the same time, I became acquainted with the author of a scandalous book that discussed illicit aspects of baseball culture and alleged my participation in such conduct. I literally pointed my finger to protest my innocence. I am among baseball's all-time leaders in home runs, hits, and failed drug tests. Who am I?

In 1982, I teamed with Rickey Henderson to steal 158 bases - setting a new record for teammates.
I stole 47 bases at age 40 and 35 at 41.
I was part of the Dodgers infield that stayed together for a record-breaking 8 years.

Boggs got it on a homer and then celebrated for half an hour. Biggio got it but then got thrown out trying to stretch it into a double, IIRC. The triple I think is Robin Yount ..... or maybe Paul Molitor. I can picture it but I forgot which of those former teammates got the unlikely triple.

I was drafted by an NBA team, an ABA team, an NFL team and a MLB team before choosing baseball for my career. I once charged the mound on Nolan Ryan and had a near 20 years streak of futility against him before breaking up his no-hit bid in the 8 the inning with only my second career hit against him in 23 AB's.

They do remind me of each other.:lol And now it makes sense because I couldn't think of when Dawson ever charging Nolan. That would have been a pay per view event.

LOL I might have. It's one of my favorite ones because no one is ever thinking pitcher on that sort of question.
Ditto the Babe Ruth the pitcher and fielder question...I stumped the guys at baseball fever with that one because they just weren't thinking of Ruth as a pitcher. I think I gave more information here on that one than I did there though.

It was early in Winfield's career. He was the first and only other player to charge the mound on Ryan in his entire career besides Robin Ventura...and probably the A #1 reason Ryan Ventura got the crap beat out of him when he did so 20 years later.
Have you ever seen Dave Winfield? I mean all you need to know about it is that Winfield was drafted by an NFL, NBA, ABA, and MLB team. Nolan wanted no part of that..it basically was just a wrestling match with the teamates breaking it up.
LOL in this one it was Winfield that did the swinging and Nolan ducked and tackled him until his catcher could come out there for help.
I don't think it's possible for a normal sized man to beat Dave Winfield in a fight. Dude is insanely built. He was going to be a TE in the NFL. Imagine that a TE that was also a gold glove center fielder.
I forget the details but I think Nolan whizzed one by Winfield's head and Winfield took exception to it so he charged. Next time up he got a fastball whizzed right by his head again, probably going 100mph or so.

Who am I?Hmmm ... Julio Franco? I was going to say Juan Gonzalez but Franco would be the "tie". I know Franco homered during a Nolan Ryan no-hitter that I watched.
Although, the Tiger sounds more like something Juan Gone would do ... same with the homers.
whottt
05-13-2009, 01:04 AM
Was Julio :tu
He didn't hit many HR but that's more because he didn't swing for homers. That bat was a display in Tom Grieve's office, I think they said it was about a 65-75 ounce bat that wasn't ever actually meant to be used to hit with and one day Julio said he could hit a HR with it and they told him he was crazy(which he was) and that he'd be doing good to even swing it much less make contact with an actual thrown ball with it, much less knock it out of Arlington stadium...so he grabbed it and knocked two balls out of Arlington stadium with it. No easy feat as Arlington stadium was a total pitcher's park.
And he did it holding it in his regular stance which was a kind of a freaksh one...he almost held the bat straight up in the air.
He was a strong dude, that probably could have hit a lot of HR if he wanted to, something that wasn't always apparent in his stats.
Was probably the only guy in history to win a batting title swinging a 40+ ounce bat. I believe he had the heaviest bat in baseball just about every year of his career.
And yeap, he owned a tiger. Juan Gone I think might have owned one too but if he did he got the idea from Julio...hell, he might have bought Julio's.
