NEW DELHI (AFP) – An Indian man who fathered seven daughters has not washed for 35 years in an apparent attempt to ensure his next child is a boy, newspapers reported.

Kailash "Kalau" Singh replaces bathing and brushing his teeth with a "fire bath" every evening when he stands on one leg beside a bonfire, smokes marijuana and says prayers to Lord Shiva, according to the Hindustan Times.

"It's just like using water to take a bath," Kalau was reported as saying. "A fire bath helps kill germs and infection in the body."

Kalau, 63, from a village outside the holy city of Varanasi, outraged his family by refusing to take a ritual dip in the river Ganges even after his brother died five years ago.

"I still don't remember how it all began," he said in Saturday's edition of the paper. "I just know it started about 35 years ago."

4-5 days, for a music festival. It was outdoors, very open, so even after a few days it was fine. I went swimming in a lake too, so that's even less of a big deal.

But it felt awesome to shower when I did. Probably good for my skin to go for a while without that, too.

I've spent around 6 or 7 days without showering when I go backpacking in the Cordillera. Trust me, when its raining for 7 days straight and the temperature is around 1 or 2 degrees celcius... FUCK SHOWERING!

I went about a week and a half one summer in high school. I basically spent a week at a friend's house, but his bathroom was disgusting so my not showering was not me not wanting to shower so much as it was me being afraid that I'd catch a disease while trying to clean up.

But damn was that week fun as hell.

In 2004, I hurt my back playing pickup basketball and it would literally take me about 30 minutes just to swerve my way out of bed. I think I went about 4 days without showering, the pain of trying to stay upright and stand in a wet and slippery shower was too much to take.

Well I was in hospital on bedrest for 2 months a few years ago and although I couldn't shower, I had a "bed bath" everyday. But what bothered me the most was my hair, so after about 4 days I was so fed up with it my friend called my hair guy and had him come in and shave my head!! After that the next weeks were a breeze!

I did a 2 week wilderness horseback pack trip in British Columbia that was shower less.

Was in a body cast for two months once, so 2/3 didn't get washed and the rest just got wiped down. That was some godawful stank when they finally cut that damn cast off.
