The name? Cowboys Stadium; concert to open venue June 6

May 13, 2009
CBSSports.com wire reports

ARLINGTON, Texas -- The new $1.1 billion Dallas Cowboys (http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/teams/page/DAL) stadium doesn't have an announced sponsor yet -- but now it has a name.
Team owner Jerry Jones announced Wednesday that the venue in Arlington will be called Cowboys Stadium.
Country star George Strait will headline the opening event at Cowboys Stadium. The June 6 concert will also feature Reba McEntire, Blake Shelton and Julianne Hough from Dancing With the Stars.
The Cowboys on Aug. 21 will host Tennessee in their first preseason game at the new venue, which replaces Texas Stadium in Irving.

Yeah..me too..but after the money it cost to get that thing built, they're going to need one.

Very lame...but it is the most profitable part of the business..and when you build a billion dollar stadium, you HAVE to have one.

If there is any justice in the world, it would be called Landry Stadium.

Although I think JJ will whore himself out to the highest bidder, so at least do a "Landry Field at _______ stadium"

Isn't there an arena named for Amway somewhere? Between that and Enron field, there's hardly anything that could be worse.

The only stadium that should never have had naming rights attached to it is Joe Robbie, since he's the one who built the stadium with private money. All other ones are fair game. I thought "ball park in Arlington" was supergay when they announced it, but I'm glad time has proven me wrong on that one. "Cowboys Stadium" is fine for now.

I actually like the name "ball park in Arlington."

That would be awesome, but unlikely.

With this stadium, I don't think it's really about whoring himself out. When you spend over a billion dollars on a stadium, you absolutely have to have a sponsor...no one can afford to spend as much money as he has on this stadium and then afford to keep it running.

I think they should name it the Disney Amphitheater since events like the Jonas brothers will be bigger than cowboy games.

I agree to a point. Yes you need sponsors but you could do it in a way that doesn't affect the name of the stadium. Advertise in and around the stadium, give the sponsor all the signage rights, etc.

Or Mcaffee Coliseum where the Raiders play. I'd rather the name stick to Cowboys Stadium.

Is Jerry Jones broke? (http://www.fannation.com/truth_and_rumors/view/105053-is-jerry-jones-broke)

Is Jerry Jones broke? Perhaps, we should just call it belt tightening. When you examine some of the moves the Cowboys (http://www.fannation.com/tags/show_tag/6) have made in the off-season, it makes you wonder, especially since the Cowboys (http://www.fannation.com/tags/show_tag/6)' $1.25 billion stadium doesn't have a corporate sponsor. Seriously, think about it. Then there's the curious decision the Cowboys (http://www.fannation.com/tags/show_tag/6) made on draft day to drop out of the second round and into the third round, where the contracts are typically shorter and less expensive. Add to that the big deal Jerry made about not wanting to trade into the first round because of the financial risk involved and you're within your rights to wonder whether he's making decisions based more on money than winning.
