hhml
05-14-2009, 11:36 PM
Eh...if they trade him, so be it. If not, I don't mind. Kobe at this point is just a jump shooter. He rarely attacks anymore and even when he does, he's not strong enough to absorb the contact or can jump as high as he used to. Lakers won't get equal value in return for him anyway.

KSeal
05-14-2009, 11:37 PM
Well lets not be retarded, we trade Kobe and this Laker team won't even make the playoffs. I do agree that his act of trying to be a leader and what not is getting very old when his team comes out and gives these half assed bullshit performances. Rockets please win game seven so the Lakers can just go home, this team doesn't deserve to move on, the Rockets do.

If Kobe doesn't trust his teammates, can you blame him? I mean, that's one soft front line he's playing with. The bench has gone to hell and there is no functioning point guard. If you are a Lakers fan and Kobe passes off to another player in a tight game in the finals, who on this team do you feel confident about hitting the shot?
For the record, I would trade any three Rockets for Kobe Bryant.

Kobe said "we have to do whatever we can to get the hell out of this damned series" ........................like he was nervous..........

Lakers saying they are not nervous...........I hope they keep thinking that.............................

However, I expect them to blow out the rockets. But I consider this a win for Houston, no one expected them in this condition to push LA to seven games. No Yao, No Mutumbo? You kidding me!? (Tmac doesn't count)

What a shitty thread. Talk about an overreaction. :lol So the Lakers didn't sweep a team that had heart. Since that didn't happen, let's trade our franchise player. That will make everything right. He's not just our franchise player, but a 1st ballot hall of famer who is still the best in the league...even now in his 15th year. And trade him for LeHype of all people? I would stop being a Laker fan until he retired. Seriously. I'd never want that douche on my favorite team.

Threads like this is why people hate Laker fans. I wonder if threads like this existed from Sp*r fans when the Lakers swept them in the playoffs a few years back during their 3peat. Doubtful that their fans wanted to trade TD. :rolleyes Why? Because that's just silly. What a shitty thread. Probably started by a fair weather Laker "fan." :lol

Leadership- The quality that separates Duncan from Kobe.

I don't think he learned leadership but it doesn't matter because Pau is the best big in the league.

Point of contention.

I never pegged Tim Duncan as some great leader. Great player and when he does lead, it's by example. But it's not like Duncan is viewed as a fiery or vocal leader. To me, for all of the Spurs championship runs, I saw people other than Duncan as the main leader, whether it's Coach Popovich, Avery Johnson, David Robinson. I even see Ginobili as more of a leader than Tim Duncan.

Now, that's not to say Duncan isn't a leader at all. Like I said, Duncan leads by example. But I don't see Duncan as the type of leader who when the going gets tough brings his "troops" together and inspires and motivates them to greatness. I think Gregg Popovich has been that leader for the Spurs during their great run over the decade plus. Not Duncan.

ohmwrecker
11-12-2010, 02:11 PM
There is a great video that I can't find of Duncan talking to his teammates during a timeout and everyone is paying rapt attention to what he is saying.
Make no mistake, Duncan is the leader of the team. The perception is that he isn't vocal is because he isn't as demonstrative on the court. I have seen him light into some guys and take the time to give certain players his individual attention. It's not that noticeable, but he does it all the time.

HarlemHeat37
11-12-2010, 02:21 PM
Duncan is my favorite player, but his leadership is a little overrated by Spurs fans..

Of course Duncan is vocal at times, he's had the biggest role on the team for so long..he's the defensive anchor, so he has to be vocal on the court, especially on D..however, from pretty much every Spurs player we've ever heard from in regards to this subject, Duncan is mostly a "lead by example" type of guy..even though he does express his opinion, obviously, he doesn't do it to the extent that a lot of Spurs fans seem to say..

This is from Mahinmi last month:

Is he a leader in the locker room?
He is a leader in his own way. He never screams but he sometimes talks. Contrary to what we can think, he talks a lot on the court. It's true that he talks less in the locker room where we hear more Tony and Manu after the coach speak. However, during some timeouts, Tim can say "listen to me" when he wants to put things back in place. He doesn't hesitate to speak before Pop in these case but he doesn't do it a lot.

ohmwrecker
11-12-2010, 02:35 PM
I don't see how that contradicts what I said, or makes my statement an "overrated" assessment of Duncan's leadership role. If anything, it's supports what I said.

JamStone

Sometimes it's a distinction that is played out though. There are different styles of leadership and different people, teams require different styles. I know people hate the comparison, but the type of leader Kobe is basically mirrors the same type of leader Jordan was. But people don't question Jordan as a leader because of the success he and the Bulls had.

Kobe is criticized an awful lot for not being a good leader because of his selfishness with the basketball or because of a couple off-the-court examples of him trashing teammates. But you also see Kobe as a mentor on the court to his teammates. He's an SOB sometimes, but he's often coaching his teammates in between quarters and in timeouts and such. He's also a tireless worker on the court in practice and in the gym. If you want a lead-by-example leader, Kobe's teammates watch a guy who maintains his conditioning all year round, who doesn't wait a month after the season ends to take care of his surgery that will put his team in a bind when the season starts, that is the first guy in the gym every morning. You can fault him for being an asshole but I don't question Kobe's leadership anymore than I would question any other great player in the league. Just because he snitched on Shaq and punched Brian Cook in the back of the head and trashed Bynum on youtube, those things don't define him as a leader. It makes him a punk ass bitch and a bad friend, but not a bad leader, not when it comes to his play on the court.

I agree Duncan is a "lead by example" type of leader. But he isn't an inspirational or motivational leader like say Drew Breez was last year for the Saints or even (as much as he's hated) as Kevin Garnett is as a leader. KG is a more inspirational leader than Duncan. And I know there are plenty of people who just hate KG so much they wouldn't want to hear that kind of comparison. I've grown to hate KG too, but he is. KG inspires his teammates.

I don't think "leadership" is a distinction between Duncan and Kobe.

I don't think "leadership" is a distinction between Duncan and Kobe.

I agree with that. Respect is probably the most important asset for a leader to possess, and I don't think Kobe has always had that from his teammates. You can't really question his leadership over the last two years though.
