Broad Ripple High School senior Kenya Simmons didn't know what to expect when she was called to the principal's office.
Principal Linda Davis simply asked the 18-year-old if she planned to go to the prom. Simmons said no.
The teen said, "My dream was to go with George Hill," the 2004 Broad Ripple graduate who just completed his rookie season with the San Antonio Spurs.
In a fan letter, Simmons had asked Hill if he would take her to the prom.
Then the principal let her in on a big surprise.
The letter touched the pro basketball player, who earlier had gone to the school office -- and bought tickets to tonight's big event.
"My fantasy had come true," Simmons said. "I started crying because I was happy."
The Indianapolis Public Schools student wrote to Hill in February but hadn't gotten a reply.
Since the Dallas Mavericks eliminated the Spurs in the first round of the NBA playoffs April 28, Hill knew he could be back home for the prom.
Hill accepted the offer because Simmons' letter showed she was a big fan.
"I was going to be in Indianapolis with no plans (tonight), so it was a great opportunity to go to my old school," said Hill, who attended the prom twice when he was a student.
Hill knew taking Simmons to the event tonight at the Scottish Rite Cathedral would make her the talk of the school.
"That's what I wanted," Hill said. "I saw it as a way to connect to the school. I love this city. It's a blessing that I have made it this far, and I want to give back."
Hill, who isn't married, didn't want to comment on his current dating status.
His plans for the evening with Simmons, who will attend Ivy Tech Community College to study nursing, are simple.
"I just want us to go and have fun," said Hil. His assistant will accompany the couple.
Simmons has followed Hill's career from Broad Ripple to Indiana University- Purdue University Indianapolis and the Spurs. She has seen him play with IUPUI and the Spurs but never met him.
Simmons rushed over the past two weeks to get ready for the prom. Her mother, Juanita Simmons, and a cousin scrambled to get a dress.
"We rushed to get everything together, but now we got it and she's going to look pretty," her proud mother said.
Juanita Simmons, a single parent of five, intends to have the camcorder running from the time Hill arrives at the house. She said it's a great way for her daughter to close out high school.
"She's going to the prom with an NBA player and finishing with a 3.0 GPA," she said.
The students will be thrilled to have one of the school's most famous athletes on the dance floor, the principal said.
"It will be a great prom, I'm sure," Davis said. "Everybody will be very excited."

That is really sweet of George Hill.
In general I agree about him being too old to frequently go out with a high school student, but for this one time special and supervised occasion, I see no harm in it.

You act as if that is out of the ordinary or something. A lot of people have pictures of themselves unintentionally put on the web. As if that makes the "date" to the prom anything more than a nice gesture and complete innocence.

I can understand not letting your high school daughter DATE a 23 year old, but a special prom thing like this? I don't see any downside. Its not like Hill is cruising for easy high school girls, lord knows NBA players, even semi-obscure rookies like Hill, can have all the easy groupie tail they want. He's just doing a nice favor for a girl. Plus, his assistant is going as a pseudo-chaperone. I don't see anything wrong with it.
I think its sweet and classy. It would be like Ashton Kutcher or Shia LeBoeuf taking a fan to her prom. Not a big deal at all.

My real point was that I don't think that Ploto is the only one who has that opinion -- so there's no reason for people to attack her in this thread.

I wonder how the school would respond if this was just any 23 year old man who wanted to attend the prom. At my child's school, any prom date who is not a current student of that school must be approved by the Dean of Students in advance.
I said first off in my post that it was a nice gesture but I still find it a little misguided that parents do these types of things simply because someone is a celebrity.

People are wierd sometimes in America. If Hill was 25 and she was 20, no one would be saying anything. For some reason, anything before 20 in America is taboo even though the law recognizes someone as an adult at the age of 18.

I have to disagree.
I do believe it was a nice gesture...by the way. I believe George is doing it in the right spirit and good supervision.
However, there is a major difference between a 17 or 18 year old whose still in high school and a 23 year old grown man. Maturity, ways of the world, and life experience are huge in that age range.
As someone's whose wife is expecting our first girl in August....I would not let my daughter at 17 or 18 (whose is still in high school) go to her prom with a 23 year old man. Period.
And to use the arguement that teenagers are having babies and no one doesn't care anymore...is not true. Also, most of the teenage girls having babies are with teenage boys....not grown men. That's not a parallel argument.
Americans are not weird...to feel that situation isn't right.

If it was some 18 year old from a random high school, I think it would be a little strange. But it is his alma mater and she is a big fan of his. I have a daughter and I am pretty protective, but I would be fine with the situation if the circumstances were the same....if George was a star at her high school and she was a big fan of his.
Couple all of this with the fact that the local media will probably be covering this pretty closely and I seriously doubt anything inappropriate will happen.

I was going to mention that. George Hill has a full-time assistant who travels with him? Add that to the list of reasons why athletes go broke.
I hope that at least some of the people involved in this remember that it's her prom. And I hope Hill is smart enough to understand that even a hint of a scandal with a high school prom girl would pretty much ruin his NBA future anywhere except Denver.
As for the mom - I think George is taking a much bigger risk. Those parents down in Victoria were happy to let their teenage daughters go to a party with Ron Gant. And afterwards they acted like they were outraged, and filed charges which they tried to use to get a financial settlement. These people sound really nice. But God forbid that one of the girl's friends gives her alcohol (or anything else) while she is at the prom.
I hope, for eveybody's sake, that this turns out to be the nice thing it sounds like. Because it really does sound very nice. I could use a story that turns out good for a change.

LeBron James had two babies by the time he was George Hill's age. Most parents understand that it happens. But most, thankfully, still don't want to encourage it. And in 5-6 years, when you're as hold as George Hill is now, you'll understand that better.

People are making too big a deal about this. It's prom, something you only (usually) get one chance at. It's not like she's starting a relationship with Hill. It's a one-time thing and it will be more then adequately supervised.
She wasn't planning on going which means she couldn't find a date. As someone who had the same problem, I can tell you it's not a good feeling. Do you know how great it would be for her self-esteem to go to such a special event with one of her idols?

No- I know too much about what goes on in professional sports. That is not a place I would ever want my high school-aged daughter to be involved, especially with a 23 year old man. And not that it matters, but I do not recall George Hill actually graduating from college. Maybe he did and I missed it.

I think everyone is missing the point. It's a special favor he's doing for this girl. It's not like they're actually together romantically.
Just as an aside, she is 18. I wonder what the cut off age is for all of those people who are opposed to an 18 year old dating a 23 year old.
