Bryan Davis from Texas A&M will be joining the San Antonio Spurs' 2010 Las Vegas Summer League. Davis averaged 9.6 Points and led the Aggies with 8.1 Rebounds a game his senior season.

This may be a retarded question, and I feel like I should already know it, but:

When a player (let's use the Davis example) agrees to play for a team's summer league, is he under any kind of obligation -- legal, moral, respect, understood, or any kind of loose one -- to give that team the first-shot at signing him/offering a training camp invite. Or even though Davis is playing for the Spurs, the Wizards can look at him equally and sign him to a contract before the Spurs do?

There certainly isn't any kind of legal obligation there. I'd doubt there's much of a moral one either. If you're a guy like Davis who's on the outside of the nba looking in, you're going to do whatever gives you the best chance to get into the league no matter who it's for. There's not a whole lot of room for self imposed moral obligations there.

This is correct.

Alonzo Gee is a perfect example. He actually signed with the Wizards last season on a 10-day contract but when that contract expired he decided to sign with the Spurs even though Washington was also offering him a partially guaranteed contract for the rest of the season.

However, if you have a breakout summer league, there might be a sense of loyalty that draws you to the team you played for. For example, Anthony Morrow went undrafted 2 years ago, and then played for the Warriors summer league team. After being basically the best non-drafted player at the Rocky Mountain Revue, I imagine he had offers from several teams, but he signed with the Warriors.

Davis is a good player. Excellent post defender and rebounder. He'll make someone's roster. Either in the NBA or Europe.
