Adjustable/removeable grill and tortilla warmer/griddle...

I like having a fire outside my firebox so I can shovel "ready" coals into the firebox when necessary...

Cook box...there are sloped 1/4" plate pans under the grate that go to a drain...heat/smoke comes across under the pans then back across the meat...I can set it up to vent there if just using the cook box or divert back to the smoke box...

Anyway, seems a nice accomplishment. Good job!

my buddy's friend has one of those but 3-4 times as big. he brings it over to my buddys house from time to time just to cook a small amount of food which cracks me up cause you could serve a whole army if he actually cooked massive amounts of food on it.

nice rig.

Besides being intelligent, handsome, and well hung, I'm a good cook too!:lol

I frequently cook for 40+ people and also will probably do a few BBQ cook offs...I've done them before on other pits and I wanted to build my own...I've been working on this thing off and on for 5 years...

Yeah, I didn't want to get it TOO big...I can cook 12 briskets if I double stack which is about all I will ever do...I didn't want it to be so big that it took a cord of wood to fire it...

I want something large but I have to stop myself because I rarely cook for more than 15 people. Fuel isn't cheap. I think I paid almost 15 bucks for a large bag of lump. Plus the cost of mesquite and pecan seem to be going up.

Well MMMMYYYYYY Buddy's best Friend has one that is 8-10 times as big. He brings it over to my buddy's house to cook ONE hotdog. It makes me ROTFL cause he could serve a whole country if he actually cooked massive amounts of food on it.

Did I mention that you just have to talk into it to tell it how you want it cooked and it has a massage chair attached to it that has a fridge under it that holds a case of beer?

Great achievement! You gave it a great finish for a DIY - could've been a professional custom job!

I'm not sure about the use of all the other parts outside of the grill, as I've never seen such a huge BBQ contraption before. The 'wired' area seems to be for storing firewood, judging by the picture of the other system... but
1. what is that big vertical standing 'shelf' for?
2. And what about the longer horizontal shelf behind it (with 2 dials)?

Is it for smoking meat in addition to BBQ'ing? If so, why put a smoker on wheels? I understand that smoking meat is a long process and therefore not something suited for 'on the road' cooking...

leemajors
05-22-2009, 08:11 AM
the vertical shelf is for smoking. i would imagine the pit is stationary when in use.

Quasar
05-22-2009, 08:17 AM
Hey Lee, ok!

But as smoking meat can sometimes take 12-24 hours, or even longer, what's the purpose of bringing such a machine to someone else's house for a party if the food won't be ready on time? (assuming that this is the purpose of creating such a trailer)

You can park the pit overnight whereever you're going to have the party and start the food at night. You can have a big family party at the park or anyplace. Not everyone has the equipment to host a big barbecue; this is portable.

Slightly off-topic, but this reminds me of the guys who drove one of these from Texas to New York after 9/11 and fed the volunteers and firefighters and people who were cleaning up the mess and looking for bodies.

2. And what about the longer horizontal shelf behind it (with 2 dials)?

Those are thermometers, so you can have side slightly hotter than the other.

You know how I know I've lived in Texas all my life? It really boggles my mind that there are people who aren't sure what this is, and more mind-boggling, don't understand why we'd want one. :lol

hahaha... we do have BBQ in Mauritius, but that's usually out of a half metal barrel. The below image is as an *extremely* souped up version of what we use :)

http://www.barrel-barbecue.co.uk/original-barrel-barbecue-open.jpg

So going from that barrel to the Bat Tank posted above is quite a stretch in understanding :)

Why are the thermometers separate? Doesn't the wood burn beneath the grill???

the wood goes in the smoke box out back, and most cooking is indirect, esp with the smoker part.

Traditionally the idea of dual thermometers is to monitor each side of the pit to ensure consistency.
