Fedor Emelianenko, Josh Barnett Verbally Agree to Match; Announcement Soon
Affliction's third event, featuring a main event of Fedor Emelianenko vs. Josh Barnett and taking place at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., on August 1, should be officially announced within days, a source with knowledge of the situation told FanHouse.
Though neither Emelianenko or Barnett has signed official bout agreements, they have both verbally accepted the matchup, according to the source.
Earlier this week, Affliction President Tom Atencio told FanHouse he would not be able to confirm any details until contracts were officially signed.
The event will air on pay-per-view.
While Emelianenko-Barnett had long been rumored, another source inside Affliction told FanHouse that the organization at least briefly considered a rematch between Emelianenko and Andrei Arlovski (the two squared off in January with Emelianenko winning by first-round KO). Arlovski, however, was recently announced for a June 6 Strikeforce fight with Brett Rogers.
Emelianenko is considered by many to be the top heavyweight in the world, and boasts a 30-1 career record with one no contest. He has not lost a bout since Dec. 2000, and holds wins over ex-UFC champs Tim Sylvia and Arlovski, and heavyweight great Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, among others.
Barnett, 24-5 and a former UFC champion, most recently defeated Gilbert Yvel by submission due to strikes at Affliction 2 in January. He and Emelianenko are longtime friends, but will put their relationship aside for one night.
Emelianenko is expected to go on a U.S. promotional tour in early June before beginning his training camp.
The August 1 show will also likely feature a bout between Brazilian slugger Vitor Belfort and surging star Gegard Mousasi, according to the source, though Mousasi first has a May 26 DREAM fight with Mark Hunt in Japan. Interestingly, for a time, Emelianenko-Barnett and Belfort-Mousasi were both rumored as possibilities at Affliction 2 before the organization changed course.
Meanwhile, Sylvia will likely take on either Paul Buentello or Yvel.

White interview: Fedor stinks and so did the UFC heavyweight class
By Steve Cofield
Dana White told Cagewriter that his head nearly exploded when Brock Lesnar dropped his Bud Light-Coors Light rant (5:20 mark) after his win at UFC 100. Maybe it did, because the recall portion of his brain has taken a hit. While the MMA world waits for the UFC and Fedor Emelianenko to just get a deal done, White continues to scream at anyone, including Cagewriter, who has "The Last Emporer" No. 1 pound-for-pound (4:25 mark).
"How can you call this guy the best in the world? He's a heavyweight and look at the guys he's fought," said White sounding very anti-heavyweight. "When you say Fedor beat all the big names, that was back in PRIDE. You're talking what four years ago? So wait a minute, maybe Muhammed Ali is the best pound for pound best fighter in the world. By calling him best pound-for-pound in the world that is insane."
Fedor just beat two former UFC heavyweight champs, Tim Sylvia and Andrei Arlovski, in less than four minutes. According to White it means nothing because those guys are no good and never were. The revisionist history that came out of White's mouth next was mind boggling:
"You guys hear me all the time talking about how horrible our heavyweight division was. Our heavyweight division was weak. I said it then too."
I have never heard White say that and he certainly didn't say it when Arlovski or Sylvia were the active champs. He also says Randy Couture said something to the same effect and that's why he came back to fight Sylvia at UFC 68.
White kept going back to Ray Mercer's win over Sylvia in an effort to downgrade what Fedor did to "The Maine-iac." He asked where Mercer is ranked in the heavyweight division. I responded by saying Mercer could probably beat some of the lousy strikers amongst the MMA heavyweights:
"You think if you put Ray Mercer in the UFC, it might be the first death in the UFC," said White.
The Fedor conversation began when White was told that Affliction's Tom Atencio said the UFC will never be able to strike a deal with Emelianenko's management:
"The guy's a loser," White said of Atencio. "Anything this guy has ever said, has never come true, every word that's ever come out of this guy's mouth has never come true and we're going to listen to what he has to say?"
Maybe it's all part of the grand plan to improve the UFC'S standing during future negotiations with Fedor camp, otherwise White is still suffering from the brain cramps of UFC 100.
On a side note, we were hoping to hear Atencio's take on Saturday during Luke Thomas' MMA Nation Show on WJFK but a mix-up kept the Affliction VP off the air. Thomas was not happy:
Let's just hope this Fedor nonsense ends soon. Hopefully this NSFW video isn't a preview of White and Fedor's management as they work on the deal.

As previously reported, the bout between Fedor Emelianenko and Josh Barnett has been canceled. Barnett tested positive for a banned substance and the athletic commission will not reinstate his license. MMAJunkie.com is now reporting that Vitor Belfort has verbally agreed to the bout with Fedor Emelianenko, and negotiations are underway to finalize the financial terms of the deal. An official announcement is expected later today.
Xtreme Couture striking coach Shawn Tompkins stated that Vitor is currently walking around at 205, and could easily make 210-215 pounds for the August 1st with Fedor.
American Top Team Executive Dan Lambert has stated that while Bobby Lashley was mentioned as a possible replacement, he would not be taking the fight on such short notice.

Josh Barnett tested positive for Clostebol, an anabolic steroid
by Zak Woods on Jul 22, 2009 5:07 PM EDT in News 0 comments
Today the California State Athletic Commission released a statement surrounding Josh Barnett's reported "positive test."
Barnett's June 25 drug test came back positive for 2a-methyl-5a-androstan-3a-ol-17-one, an anabolic steroid. CSAC learned of the results July 21 and immediately denied a license for Barnett. CSAC also informed the promoter of Barnett's August 1 bout against Fedor Emelianenko that the bout would not be approved.
"The license of Josh Barnett was denied pursuant to rule 303 of Title IV of the California Code of Regulations," said CSAC Interim Executive Officer Dave Thornton. "That rule prohibits the use of certain substances, including anabolic agents, by any boxer or MMA fighte
The actual anabolic steroid that Barnett tested positive for is Clostebol as 2a-methyl-5a-androstan-3a-ol-17-one is the metabolite of said steroid. Clostebol is actually a weak anabolic steroid. As with all steroid tests, they are not actually testing the for the drug itself but the metabolic waste in the urine of the athlete.
One study found that Clostebol metabolites, though not the one Barnett tested positive for, were found in athletes who had eaten meat from animals that had been treated with anabolic steroids. Another study found that incidental Clostebol contamination has been found in athletes after sexual intercourse, though for such a contamination to occur the individuals would have to be taking medication with trace levels of Clostebol.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration does not approve of the use of medicines that contain anabolic steroids.
Currently the CSAC is testing Barnett's "B-sample" to confirm the first test.
Josh Barnett was slated to fight WAMMA heavyweight champion Fedor Emeilanenko at Affliction "Trilogy" in ten days. Affliction's VP, Tom Atencio, is currently in the process of finding a replacement.

"Fabricio Werdum - One of Afflcition's biggest goals should be to find a heavyweight (or big light heavyweight) to replace Barnett. We've already seen Emelianenko fight someone coming up multiple weight classes to fight him, and it wasn't pretty. Werdum seems like the most logical choice. He's a legit heavyweight, he has some exposure from the UFC, and with his August 15th fight with Alistair Overeem being recently canceled, he should be in shape."

My Response
Category: Sports
Many of you are wondering what's happening. What I can say is that when applying for my license, the CSAC asked for me to submit a urine sample for testing prior to granting my license as they do with everyone, I believe. It was not a random test. I had no reason to believe there would be any issues and went in to submit my sample at the earliest possible opportunity on June 25th. I never once thought there would be a problem.
My representatives and I are working to gather as much info as possible and handle this situation as best as we can. I am embarrassed and want for nothing more than to resolve this issue and receive a license from the State of California as I have done many times already and for other states as well.
I am very thankful for all the great family, friends and fans that still support me.
Sincerely,
Josh

I think it's a little unfair to say "fighting another MW"...technically it’s true, but there will be about 1 inch (maybe?) and 15-20 lbs difference between them. Doesn’t make it suck any less, but it’s still a small HW (LHW if he cut weight) against a guy that has fought most of his career at LHW (and some at HW) and now cuts to MW. But technically, Vitor was to be a MW on this card. So, yea...
I'm not picking on you...I'm seeing it mentioned everywhere. Lesnar had 50+ lbs on Randy, but that's just the way the HW division is. I don't think the size advantage is a big deal in this fight.
I'm bummed that we don't get Fedor vs Barnett. Vitor is still dangerous...Fedor can't sleep on him. He's more dangerous than Lindland...and HMC...

Can someone pull an updated card so everyone can re-do their picks? Vitor was a bad mf 10 years ago..

Monson is calling out Fedor...says he's submit him. Vitor is a bigger threat IMO.

Early odds
Fedor Emelianenko -850
Vitor Belfort +550
I really like Lauzon as an underdog...

Oh no, I get it. It just seems unfair to give him even that tiny little bit of advantage, seeing as he's already so much better than everyone else anyway :lol

MMA legend Don Frye will return to action on Aug. 28 to face Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal at M-1 Global's first major U.S. show in Los Angeles.
But he'd happily step in to face Fedor Emelianenko at Affliction "Trilogy"... if promoter Tom Atencio will let him.
"If Tom was smart, he'd have me fighting Fedor instead of whoever he's hiring on a one week notice," Frye told MMAInsider. "My phone works if he wants a real fight with someone who sell a fight in four days, somebody who will beat that bald-headed commie too."
In fact, Frye said the only reason he was fighting Lawal was to get an eventual shot at Emelianenko.
"He ain't seen anything I have to offer," continued Frye. "He built his whole reputation (as a) waffle house chef. They've been serving him up ham and eggs with a side of canned tomatoes. I'll bring it. And if he can bring it, you'll have the best fight you've ever seen on the planet."

Fedor is in an impossible situation. I bet Tom wishes Cro Cop wishes he hadn't JUST signed that UFC contract.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/mma/07/24/affliction.trilogy.canceled/index.html
In a matter of days Affliction Entertainment's "Trilogy" event when from promising the top heavyweight fight in mixed martial arts to being cancelled outright, multiple sources confirmed to SI.com Friday morning.
Affliction Entertainment vice president began making calls with the news Friday morning to fighters scheduled to appear on the Aug. 1 card, SI.com has learned.
The abrupt change comes in the wake of 31-year-old Josh Barnett testing positive for banned substances following a California State Athletic Commission pre-fight drug test.

It's always some kind of bullshit with Affliction. On Inside MMA they were talking about how on several occasions, Affliction has had guys scheduled to fight on the card and then at some point during the actual event, they tell the guys, "Sorry your match has been cancelled."

I love the broken English genius of this comment.
Fucking hell that made me laugh...well done Poland.... :rollin
"A source close to the situation also informed MMAWeekly.com that Affliction’s pay-per-view provider, Showtime, played a major factor in the cancellation."

Looks like they weren't far off from making Fedor vs Rogers happen...
http://mma.fanhouse.com/2009/07/24/brett-rogers-manager-strikeforce-wasnt-an-obstruction-in-maki/
"Reilly added that Rogers currently weighs 290 pounds, and that Emelianenko had agreed to face him at an undisclosed catchweight."
and it sounds like Affliction was close to a merger with Strikeforce...
http://www.bloodyelbow.com/2009/7/24/962113/strikeforce-affliction-deal
which would've been nice. At least then there would be Rogers, Werdum, and Overeem...
I have a very difficult time believing Scott Coker being on vacation is what stopped that merger. Seems like such a over simplifying of a very complicated deal.

Most likely...
this is such bullshit...
"The cancellation took our company completely by surprise, as Fedor Emelianenko, M-1 Challenge fighter Mikahil Zayats, and a traveling party of 35 people from Russia consisting of Fedor’s trainers, friends, family, as well as M-1 support personnel were all on a plane en route to Anaheim.
“Additionally, Fedor did not learn of the cancellation until arriving at the airport and informed directly by M-1 legal counsel," further stated the press release.
