One week into Tim Duncan's recovery from a severely sprained right ankle, the Spurs are still aiming to get their two-time MVP back for the final week of the regular season.

"He feels a little less pain every day and he walks a little bit straighter every day," coach Gregg Popovich said. "But he's still a ways out."

Duncan is walking with a slight limp. He is expected to begin doing some light treadmill work this week.

Same old, same old: If NBA officials are interested in improving the league's TV ratings, they probably aren't hoping for a Spurs-Houston matchup in the playoffs.

In only one of the Spurs' four meetings with the Rockets this season has the winning team scored more than 81 points.

The Spurs held Houston to a season-low 70 Sunday. The Rockets held the Spurs to a season-low 67 in their Jan. 15 victory at the Toyota Center. Houston has averaged only 76.3 points in the teams' four games, more than 18 below its season average.

Rocket fizzles out: Houston guard Tracy McGrady scored a game-high 26 points, but none in the final 10 minutes.

Bruce Bowen and Manu Ginobili split time on McGrady, who played with a strained hip, in the final quarter.

History-making day: The Spurs set a season high for fan contests won during timeouts.

Restraint shown: In the first minute of the fourth quarter, Rockets center Dikembe Mutombos watted a shot attempt by Spurs' guard Brent Barry into the second row of the stands.

Ordinarily, Mutombo would have given his trademark "no-no" finger wag, but he said he restrained himself, out of respect for the Spurs and for his teammate, Jon Barry, Brent's brother.

The video on WOAI Sports Sunday Don Harris showed of Tim Duncan's ankle at practice a week after the injury was telling. It looked like a baseball inside his skin where the ankle is supposed to be. :(

Kori Ellis

I don't think that video was shot today. But yes, his ankle was still very swollen.

TheWriter

Swelling doesn't go down in a week. In two weeks, it won't even be noticeable.

What therapies and drugs do they apply to mid-season-injured $1M/month ankles?

lets see...Duncan is walking around at games with no crutches, going to work on a fucking treadmill this week, and Pop says Duncan will be back with about 5 games left as of yesterday

yet DuncanMVP claims he is out for the season :rolleyes

Bryant was out for 4 1/2 weeks, Jan 13 to Feb 13, and he was on crutches.

It's most likely Duncan's ankle won't be back to normal until next season. Hopefully in the playoffs he has a decent amount of explosiveness and lateral mobility and hopefully he doesn't turn that weakened ankle again.

If TPark were running the league, it would have folded years ago. He believes in no emotion, no fun, just robotic play. Dare to show some excitement, some trash talk, and you are expelled from the league forever. TPark would even advocate putting such players in a penal colony in Australia, never to return to the USA again, if they break the rules.

BTW, Dikembe is a class guy. He goes to Africa ever offseason for a month to work and help the all the children who are starving and suffering from diseases, while most athletes are on the golf courses and beaches, in all the 4-5 star resorts around the world.

Right. Every ankle injury weakens the muscles and tendons. Until it is completely healed (which can take months), the likelihood of another injury is increased. That's why his ankle was hurt for the umteenth time this year although this is the most serious so far.

If he is able to come back for the playoffs, pray it holds up..

This is great news and reinforces all these psuedo experts like the Memphis paper and hoopsworld.bs that always play prognostic "doctor" without examing the patient or getting a good history.

(Swelling for extended periods is common after grade II sprains, I would have expected no less)

I don't have your confidence for any particular game, but I believe based on what I know about therapy (was a physical therapist years ago and iin general the rehabilitation time for athletes is much better today due to more aggressive treatment) he will be back sometime before the playoffs at least for limited minutes.

So he if he comes back for the last 4-5 games of the regular season, he will have been out about 3 1/2 weeks. If he is out 4 1/2 weeks, he will still be back for the playoffs.

This season is not over. If he had had a 3rd degree sprain or an avulsion fracture, it would be a different story.

Jimcs, Yeah I dont like guys like stoudamire and mutombo showing the fuck off.

You want to show emotion? Do it when youve done something of noteriety.

You do a dunk?? Big fuckin whoop, go to the other end of the court.

You want to watch jumping around and acting like an idiot for no reason?? Wait for the Eagles to start playing again.

spurs fans are in denial!

Your season is pretty much over, you won't even hold on to the # 2 seed and Dallas looks like may catch you guys up.

Face reality! The spursies will finish 4th and will probably play the Kings or Rockets in the first round, also there will be an upset.

Just like in 2000.

I was listening to Rome today and it was mentioned that if Duncan is back for the playoffs he will certainly be less than 100%. It's too bad since the Spurs with a healthy Duncan are probably favored to win the title. With Duncan injured they will not win the West though.

As much as i love listening to Rome the only NEW info he ever brings is obscure stuff.

As for Mutombo, didn't Stern basically tell him to knock the finger wagging off? I thought it was last year that he wasn't allowed to do that anyway?
