A somber shadow has crossed the game of golf. Amy Mickelson, the wife of two-time Masters champion Phil Mickelson, has been diagnosed with breast cancer. Unfortunately, the list of sports names touched by breast cancer is a long one. Here are five notable survivors in the fight against the deadly disease, and another five that lost their lives:

Survivors

Deanna Favre
Wife of quarterback Brett Favre (diagnosed in 2004) Remains active in Deanna Favre Hope Foundation for women who are underserved or undernourished in battle against breast cancer.

Edna Campbell
Former pro and University of Texas basketball player (diagnosed in 2002) Sacramento resident works in real estate. Played three seasons after diagnosis, her last year in the WNBA with the Silver Stars in 2005.

Judy Rankin
Former LPGA star, Hall of Famer (diagnosed in 2006) Midland resident works as commentator for ABC on golf coverage.

Dorothy Hamill
Former Olympic ice skating champion (diagnosed in 2008) Promoting the Dorothy Hamill Fantasy Figure Skating camp, scheduled for September in Rhode Island.

Robin Roberts
ABC television personality (diagnosed in 2007) Former college basketball player and ESPN host, she now co-hosts ABC’s “Good Morning America.”

Deceased

Kay Yow
North Carolina State women’s basketball coach (died in January at age 66) Diagnosed in 1987, Hall of Fame coach won more than 700 games in her career.

Delysia Duncan
Mother of Spurs forward Tim Duncan (died in April 1990) Often told her children, “Good, better, best, never let it rest. Until your good is better and your better is best.’’

Cecilia Gonzalez De La Hoya
Mother of boxer Oscar De La Hoya (died in October 1990 at age 35) Told her son in her final days that he would go to the Olympics and win the gold medal. He did, in 1992, in Barcelona.

Heather Clarke
Wife of Northern Ireland golfer Darren Clarke (died in August 2006 at age 39) Insisted that her husband continue playing during her two years of treatment.

Judi Griese
Mother of pro football QB Brian Griese and wife of former QB Bob Griese (died in 1988) The Brian Griese-founded ‘Judi’s House’ in Denver provides counseling to children who have lost loved ones.
