Andrew Bynum wants to play more minutes, and Los Angeles Lakers coach Phil Jackson has just the solution: Play better defense.

“If he plays well, he’ll have more time,” Jackson said Saturday, several hours before Game 3 of the Western Conference finals against the Denver Nuggets.

Bynum criticized the Lakers’ defensive scheme after getting yanked from Game 2 early in the second half for his lackadaisical play that led to an easy bucket for Denver.

Jackson was displeased that Bynum didn’t hustle downcourt after failing to get a pass in the post, which allowed Nuggets center Nene to make a layup and draw a foul from Kobe Bryant. So, Bynum took a seat with 7:14 left in the third quarter and never returned, finishing with nine points, two rebounds, one foul and no turnovers in the Lakers’ 106-103 loss that evened the series at 1-1.

Bynum bristled Friday when asked about Denver’s frontcourt prowess in this series.

“They’re getting their stuff because of our defensive scheme. They’re just driving to the basket and nobody’s bumping them,” Bynum said, according to The Los Angeles Times.

Before Game 3, Bynum said he hadn’t discussed his criticism with his coach but he alternately stuck by his assertion and backed away from it.

“Yeah, and I think we went over some different things today, changed it up a little bit,” Bynum said of the defensive philosophies.

So, what exactly was wrong with the defensive scheme?

“Not the scheme is the problem. We’re just not executing it,” Bynum said. “You’ve got to take away that middle pass. They’re throwing it into the middle and just getting too much penetration.”

Bynum insisted there’s no friction between him and Jackson.

“No, definitely not. Like I said, the scheme is fine. We’re not executing it,” he said.

Does that mean Bynum’s not executing it?

“Everybody,” he said. “Nobody’s doing what we need to do correctly.”

Bynum, who missed a chunk of the season for the second straight year after tearing a ligament in his right knee Jan. 31, has been inconsistent in the playoffs. He went scoreless three times against Houston in the semifinals. Bynum said he’s feeling fine and guessed his knee was at 85 to 90 percent.

He brushed aside a suggestion that having missed so much time, he’s playing at a slower speed in the playoffs than his opponents.

“The only part that’s tough is not knowing when you’re going to be called upon,” Bynum said. “Because you get tight and you get stiff.”

Jackson said the way to stay on the court was playing better. But he added that this dispute with his 21-year-old center was overblown.

“I think he’s doing fine. I think there’s just way too much focus. This is a guy who hasn’t even played a lot of minutes,” Jackson said. “To sustain the effort for Andrew is a big deal. He can run for three, four minutes on the court and then he tires. … So, we’re just looking for short bursts from him and opportunities for him to go in there and help us.”

He'll probably get into foul trouble in game three.

Outside of the "execution of the defensive scheme", someone's got to start boxing out. Melo's getting 2-3 tries at the rim with Gold Jersey's around and Martin is just getting a free pass in the lane, especially from the weakside.

Talk with your actions, Bynumite.

Should see a whole new different kind of beast tonight.

I just have no confidence in Phil Jackson anymore.

This Laker team has so much talent that is not being utilized at all.

Fisher gets 28mpg when it's clear to everyone in the modern world that he is a huge negative for the Lakers every second he is on the floor. No defense, no offense, poor execution of the offense is what our beloved Fish is giving us these days. Phil Jackson is loyal to a fault with his vets, which is why he is the wrong coach for a young team. He won't trust the young guys to win the game for him the way Doc Rivers entrusted Rondo, Perkins, BBD, and his young bench.

We haven't even seen the triple tower lineup ONCE this whole freaking season. I'm not saying it would work all the time, but it would be one hell of a twist to throw it out every once in a while and pound it inside for easy buckets.

The ultimate issue I have with Phil is that he wants to win on HIS terms. He isn't willing to do whatever it takes to win, he has a formula in his head that he is going to stick with until the bloody end and if it doesn't work out he doesn't care.

Give me a coach that's just as hungry as Kobe is for a ring. That's the coach I want pushing this Laker team to the top.

I think if Bynum didn't wear Urine and Barney Purple, no one would have any idea who he was.

Bynum is too stupid to realize Phil Jackson is using Bynum for the better, and that it's not all about scoring contributions that impacts the game..

By letting Pau get his shots and Bynum focus on defense and rebounds it puts less stress on a guy who is fresh off his knee injury, and would better be utilized where he won't end up reinjuring his knee in this post season...
Plus I don't know how Bynum says "we're not executing" on defense, when he's supposed to be their defensive ANCHOR..

he's too much like Amare and gets in foul trouble...maybe that has more to do with his minutes, than Phil...

You can tell Bynum is only thinking of himself and not really into Phil Jackson's game plan for Bynum....during the Rockets season, he mentioned the scheme , as if it bothered him...now I'm not surprised he's finally being vocal about it to the media. :lol

the videos on youtube of him speaking out, shows he's not very bright and he got baited by the media....

Also Bynum is too stupid to recognize that they have ENOUGH offense for the entire game with Kobe and Pau alone...it's defense they need but he's too stupid to realize it because he's thinking about himself.
The last problem the Lakers have is "scoring" droughts.

What's funny is if Bynum actually did what Phil asked him to do only effectively, without the foul nonsense and his head in the clouds, the Lakers would be more well rounded.

He's a dumb kid still. Laker fan better hope he's not stunted mentally, and will mature a little bit.

He's got to learn to play defense without fouling. He uses his length to reach for a foul rather than to breakup passes or block shots he can afford to be late on because of his size. Being an enforcer does not mean hacking guys if you have the skill to defend them.
