Check this link to setup all the video codecs. It's for Ubuntu-8 instead of 9, but I don't think the process has changed any since then.

I'm using gnome and I'm running compiz. Not sure if compiz is allowing the transparency effect, or if it's just inherit to basic gnome. All I did was right click>properties on the panels and on the background tab there's a slider that adjusts the opacity.

As far as the icons thing goes- I just dragged the FF icon from where it originally was in the upper panel, upon installation, down to the center of the lower panel.

When I have a window open, it'll show up in the lower panel, but when it's minimized, other than the text and icon, it remains transparent until I mouse over it.

Damn, don't judge it too harshly by this last build (Jaunty Jackalope). I had to go back to version 8 (Intrepid Ibex) because 9 has so many problems with video. 8.10 is outstanding. 9.04 is complete trash.

Desktops are irrelevant because by and large, they are mostly useless, especially if they're cluttered up with icons.

A desktop can be a source of a great deal of information at a glance. Without opening a single program, I can get a weather update, check on my processor/RAM usage, upcoming events that I need to be mindful of, and so on. It's not useful to you because you haven't made it useful. I quite like being able to minimize everything and still have certain basic information at my disposal.

That's actually Winamp. My start menu/taskbar are set to auto-hide.

Go into the edit skin and switch it over. I think you have to change the Celsius parameter from 0 to 1.

What programs do you mean?

sabar
10-06-2009, 11:18 PM
I hate cluttering my desktop with stuff. I only keep frequently accessed files on it. Stuff like weather and media player info stays in the tray and loads silently at startup.

I've been running GNOME for a while since KDE got unstable. Maybe it is better these days; it certainly has more eye candy.

I spend 99% of my time in a console or full-screen program; the desktop is irrelevant. When I'm not using anything I prefer a screen saver to static art. I rotate a bunch of astronomical images or put it on random.

What do you mean custom skins? You mean like Enigma? You need to download it, extract it to the rainmeter folder, and then right click on rainmeter and find out which features you want, and if you want them in the taskbar or sidebar.

Thats obviously not Enigma's default configuration. Googling "Rainmeter skins", you get thousands of hits. Radial menus, extravagant clocks/weather/etc, yada yada yada...

Judging by your response, it would seem my real question then, is your desktop and Manu's a downloaded skin/theme or is it Enigma and something you just tweaked and tweaked and tweaked and tweaked until you got what you wanted?

For example, all Manu's shortcuts on his desktop are not pre-loaded. Did he have to customize each package individually?

Not a big deal if I had to, too, but if I dont, I would like to avoid it. Hope this makes sense.

Most of it is tweaking, sadly. It really doesn't take that long to figure out, and it's actually fun to learn. The skins ENABLE you to make stuff like this, it's up to you to position them correctly and find the right add-ons that suit your taste from the skin.
