I try to cut straight across, but I still get these things on a regular basis on my big toe.

Anyone know how to keep them from coming back?

When you cut you need to make sure you get under the corners. Dig deep.

when I worked at Fiesta Texas years ago I once met a lady that had to have her leg amputated because of an infection from an in-grown toenail.

My husband puts a little cotton under his when it starts to hurt to keep it from growing into the skin.

a nail on my left foot just fell off the other day. I think I dropped something heavy on it when I was helping somebody move and it just died. It fell off and now there's just this dark red patch of skin there.

Chop your foot off. No foot, no nail.

Solutions.

Cut a notch in the middle of your toenail. When the nail grows, it grows toward the middle...that usually helps to prevent them.

I used to get them badly when I played soccer. It got to the point where I got "surgery" on one of them because it got infected. Now the nail doesn't even grow anymore :tu

Self-Care at Home

If it is early in the course of the ingrown toenail, then home care may be successful in preventing the need for surgery.

Soak the foot in warm water four times a day. You do not need to add soap, salts, or antibacterial agents to the water.

Wash the foot, including the affected area twice a day with soap and water. Keep the foot clean and dry during the rest of the day.

Do not wear high heels or tight-fitting shoes. Consider wearing sandals, if possible, until the condition clears up.

Try to lift up the corner of the nail that is digging into the skin. Take a small piece of cotton or gauze and roll it between your fingers to form a small roll or wick. Then place the roll between the nail and the skin to keep it elevated. This is painful but is the most important part of home treatment. After every soaking, try to push the roll a little farther in. Change the roll out every day. It may take from seven to 15 days for the nail to grow out so that it does not poke into the skin any longer.

Ingrown Toenail Causes

Tight-fitting shoes or high heels cause the toes to be compressed together and pressures the nail to grow abnormally.

Improper trimming of toenails can cause the corners of the nail to dig into the skin. Nails should be trimmed straight across, not rounded.

Disorders such as fungal infections of the nail can cause a thickened or widened toenail to develop.

Either an acute injury near the nail or anything that causes the nail to be damaged repetitively (such as playing soccer) can also cause an ingrown nail.

If a member of your family has an ingrown toenail, then you are more likely to develop one, too. Some people's nails are normally more rounded than others, which increases the chance of developing ingrown nails.

I don't have problems with my toes much anymore but I had them all the time when I played soccer.

I get ingrown fingernails almost every time I cut my nails now. I usually do the straight across and leave it longer than most people but it still happens just about every time.

This is the best trick I've found.

I used to have ingrown toenails often when I was dancing and had to wear toe shoes, but they stopped completely shortly after I started clipping a little 'v' into the middle of each nail. It's not necessarily the greatest pedicure fashion statement, but it feels a lot better.

I had to get surgery on mine. They cut the ingrown nail out, then swabbed in some phenol to kill the nailbed, and voila! it doesn't grow back. My big toes are mangled and hideous-looking now, but no more ingrown toenails!

I used to get them. I shoved some cuticle scissors under the corners and cut/ripped them off. Hurt like hell doing it, but it's quicker than packing gauze up there for weeks.

how did you cut a notch? is it possible with clippers or did you use scissors?

Just turn the clippers so that you're cutting downwards. The top of the nail should look like --v-- when you're done.

I'll need to try that with my Daughter, she gets them all the time. Basically cutting down towards the middle of the nail.

When i was you they cut that whole side of the nail off.

I used to get them on my big toe when I was in my early 20's since I played alot of basketball. Eventually, I went to a podiatrist and they ended up burning the sides of my toenail with a laser and they never grew into the skin again. For a few years, my toe looked pretty charred but, after about 5 years, it returned to normal toe form.

I had a ingrown hair on my shaft once. It almost circled my entire wang. It's not like I would go to a doctor for this or try to dig it out or even put a hot cloth on it. It's my junk. You only have one. About 2 weeks later I saw the hair come through the skin. I waited a day or two later to actually be able to get some sort of grip on it. I pulled as hard as I could. So much shit came out it looked like I shot a huge load. I still shave my nuts every day and that never happened again.

My ex gets ingrown toenails on occasion. Usually I would just dig and cut while she screamed bloody murder. Once I cut it down she'd thank me repeatedly but during the process she hated my guts.
