ive never seen any team that was able to contain kobe. the guy is so ridiculously good that you can play perfect defense and he will still get a shot off and probably swish it to boot.
but somehow, the one exception was boston last year. they were able to keep kobe under control, and therefore were able to beat the lakers.

how did they do it? to date that is the only team ive ever seen be able to do it. what did they do differently than everybody else, and what can Orlando learn from what they did, before its too late?

a good combo of James Posey and very timely double teams, often forcing him to pass the ball before he could make a move.

Odom and Gasol played like uber-vaginas. Put up decent stats in the Finals, but they were pillow soft pussies. Allowed for the Celtics to put even more emphasis on containing Kobe. Every Celtics player shaded towards Kobe on defense, distances and angles allowed for double teams from all other four Celtics players. Plus, Posey and Pierce both did great jobs when they were on him.

He got like triple team every time he had the ball, and at the time Rad and Walton were playing in the SF spot and couldnt shoot the ball, and Odom just didnt show up

Da Troof played great defense and Boston has the best help defense in the NBA.

And you call yourself a Spurs fan?

ive never seen any team that was able to contain kobe.
Kobe got shutdown in 99.
In 2003, the Spurs baited him to go 1 on 5 using Bruce to irk him and Tim to meet him at the rim. It helps to have 2 All-NBA 1st Team Defenders.
Don't you remember 110-82 Game Six at Staples? AKA The watch Fish and Kobe cry game? :whine

Kobe is also a better, smarter player this year. A full season with teammates he can trust makes it a lot easier to deal with double teams. On the flip side his teammates now know what to do based on the defenses thrown at Kobe. Basically at this point you can't double or trap Kobe like you could have a year ago cause he stays calm and does a great job reading the defense.

Kobe nutted all over Karl's halfcourt trap defense and it was annoying to watch Denver keep using it.

And dont forget.... that while everyone comments how poorly Kobe played in last years finals, and how Boston contained him, he had almost identical numbers as the MVP of the series. (Pierce)

Boston did not contain Kobe. Kobe shot himself out of the game with another low 40% shooting.

He was selfish and was gunning for the Finals MVP. Im willing to bet if he played a more team game involving Derek Fisher, Odom and Pau Gasol the outcome would;ve been different.

Kobe's 40 points last night was due. he's had a dozen games in the finals shooting 38% and 4 TO's a game.

This game is a fluke. Expect Kobe to have another 10/28 performance on Sunday and the Magic will win.

I dont believe I ever stated Pierce didnt hit them when they counted. The point was, that even though Kobe had the same numbers, everyone acts like he was total crap. 95% of the players in the league would have been lauded for those numbers. When you are held to a higher standard... thats the way it is.

But that was last year and this is now and no matter how much hate posters like Chris R. spew, it's not going to change the outcome. Some people fixate on players... other see the overall reality.

they zoned off kobe and garnett did stunts on kobe so he would never drive. worst case for boston was odom taking a jumpshot. it also helps that the celtics foul as much as any team without getting called for it

He wasn't total crap, and no one with a brain would say he was total crap. He just was a bad leader, letting his team blow a 24 point second half lead, doing a bad job of motivating his teammates to elevate their fucking game and help him out, then giving up in game 6, looking like he was more interested in eating chow mein than playing basketball. Lamar Odom was more interested than Kobe, which is fucking pathetic.

What?

2004 Pistons ring a bell? He's been shut down many times in the playoffs.

Bryant has been to the Finals -6- times now, and only JUST NOW for the 1st time scored 40 pts in a finals game.

You talk about scoring 40 points in a finals game like it's easy shit.

why doesnt Orlando just do what boston did?

Orlando's defenders aren't big enough. Pierce and Posey are long tough dudes who can beat up on Kobe. Courtney Lee & Pietrus are smaller than Kobe.

And with Hedo at SF they aren't quick enough to rotate back to Ariza. Hedo stayed home on Ariza for the most part because Ariza's shooting 50% on 3's this postseason.

It just occurred to me that the Magic can't lose. They literally have 12 magic johnsons on their team, 13 if you count the coach, possibly more if you include staff/trainers.
