No surprise- been expected for a while

Raptors name Iavaroni, English to coaching staff for next season

TORONTO — Toronto Raptors head coach Jay Triano will have Marc Iavaroni and Alex English on the bench next season.

The two were named assistant coaches Friday, and between them bring 42 years of NBA playing and coaching experience to Triano's staff.

"I am very excited to continue working with Alex and to add Marc to the staff," Triano said in a statement. "They share our philosophy on the direction of the team, yet possess different skill sets that will be valuable to me."

Triano was the Raptors' interim coach for much of this past season after Sam Mitchell was fired Dec. 3, and signed a three-year contract as head coach May 11.

Iavaroni was the Memphis Grizzlies' head coach the past two seasons, and an assistant in Phoenix, Miami and Cleveland before that. He played seven seasons in the NBA with Philadelphia, San Antonio and Utah, and was a starter as a rookie on the 76ers team that won the 1983 NBA championship.

Triano has worked with Iavaroni at the annual Eurocamp in Italy.

English is back on the Raptors bench for his sixth season, and his eighth on an NBA coaching staff. The Basketball Hall of Famer joined Toronto after spending the 2003-04 season as an assistant coach with Philadelphia, and served as director of player personnel and assistant coach with the Atlanta Hawks in 2002-03.

English played 16 seasons in the NBA and was an eight-time all-star. His 25,613 career points rank him 12th all time.

English played two seasons in Milwaukee, two with the Indiana Pacers, and 11 with the Denver Nuggets before finishing his career in 1990-91 with the Dallas Mavericks.
