i had never seen this before, and started watching it the other day.

i was quite disappointed, considering how great some people said it was. pacino's accent at times was extremely obnoxious and seemed wayyyyy overdone. i wonder if the extreme violence is what was really captivating to some about the movie, because i thought it was kinda boring actually. i couldnt even finish it cuz it seemed like just a shitload of violence, cussing, and an annoying overdone accent. i understand that its supposed to capture a realism of what really had been going on in the criminal world, and i have no problem with movies that are like that (for instance i love The Departed, which has its share of violence, cussing, and accents), but i coudnt get into it just because it seemed boring to me, and more focused on showing a shitload of violence and drugs than anything.

am i alone in my thoughts on the movie, and should give it another shot? or did others feel similarly as well?

I watched it over the weekend and it is still one of my favorite movies. I think if you saw it when it first came out it will be better since at the time it was the shit and I still think it is one of Pacino's better performances.

I don't really consider myself to be much of a critic, as I'm pretty easily pleased when it comes to movies. That's what happens when you date into a black family and are forced to watch stupid fucking tyler perry movies every other day.

I guess I just wasn't very captivated by it, as it seemed to be more about showing the extreme violence that goes on, and I honestly don't really like violent movies that much, unless it has a rather captivating story to it (such as Saving Private Ryan and The Departed). I guess my issue with Scarface is a matter of taste more than anything.

I know but I'm simple minded and most of the time just give a movie a thumbs up or down and don't get into all the stuff that Film students and others who know more about the techniques and stuff.

If you want to really Judge Scarface fairly? Compare it to what was around at the time. The God Father and Eddie & The Cruisers. those were a few movies available at the time. No other movie in 1983 showed coke deals, talked about eating pussy, and exposed Miami for being the Coke connection years before the 80s when the coke really came later in full force. It's like trying to compare the 2009 Lakers to the Bulls of the 80s different times ,different rules.stick with an era...

That's what makes the movie great. It's so over the top on everything from the accent to the violence to the wealth to the final shootout. Tony Montana's a cartoon character, as is everyone else in the movie. It's not meant to be taken seriously, and if you go into it expecting a Godfather or Goodfellas you're going to be disappointed. I thought Pacino executed his role perfectly and Scarface is easily a top 5 movie for me. The entire movie is about excess.

That's great. But if its boring, then whether I take it seriously or not, I won't like it. That was my biggest issue... the main theme of the movie according to you is about everything being excessive. That doesn't captivate my attention at all if its simply about excessive cussing, violence, and accents.

If I wanna see a movie about excess, I'd watch Freddy Got Fingered.

I still haven't watched Godfather 1,2 or 3. I can't watch a movie for 4 hours. I fall asleep.

None of those movies are 4 hours long.

I have watched the entire trilogy in one day, though. THAT was a chore. Halfway through The Godfather Part III I just wanted it to be over. But that was partly because number 3 is the weakest of the 3 in my opinion.

Try watching one per week. It's a great trilogy that I feel should be owned by everyone.

I will.

I am not much of a movie person. I know this is going to sound crazy to you, but I barely watched all the Star War's about 2 and a half years ago.

It's not horrible in my opinion, but definitely the weakest of the trilogy. Sofia Coppola was what ruined it for me. I thought Al was typical Al and I was ok with Andy Garcia. But overall not a great movie. It's the only one that I won't stop to watch if I stumble on it on the TV.

Homey I love me some Star Wars. I've seen them all many many times. I prefer the original trilogy by far. Return Of The Jedi was the 1st movie I ever saw in the theatre. I'd seen Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back on TV but after seeing Jedi on the big screen I became a fanboy for life.

Yeah, now that I'd finally seen it, I've probably watched the original 3 over 5 times each.

Do you watch the re-issues or the original theatrical releases? I own copies of both but for me it's all about the theatrical versions, bad CGI flaws and all.

I didn't think Godfather 3 was so bad. The acting wasn't great and the plot was a little over the top, but overall it was okay. It just seems like it sucks when compared to the first two parts.

Basically. If you'd never seen the 1st two, number 3 on it's own would be pretty cool. But compared to the others, weak.

I've watched both. My brother had a VHS box set of the originals. And I've caught re-issues on HBO and those movie channels.

Pacino NAILED the accent. He must have studied the way cuban-born men speak english.

Are you female?

You lack male testosterone. You aren't very manly if you can't relate to working hard for money, women, and power.

You aren't very manly if you never felt a rush of adrenaline in you and wanted to kick some fucking ass and yell "SAY HELLO TO MY LIL FRIEND!"

sorry stretch, your man card is now revoked. Go watch "Adventures of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood",. that's more your type.

I loved the shootout in the street, the one in the club, when they planted the bomb, and the final shootout. I thought it had great action scenes, and Montana's rants against his junkie wife in the hot-tub and in the restaurant were classic.

You just shat all over scarface in your thread starter. You didn't finish it (WTF!), you thought it was boring, pacino accent, etc.

By the way, Pacino's accent is not overdone. I live in Miami, ok? That's how cubans talk. Not the cuban-americans, but the cubans who come to america as an adult.

he nailed the accent.

in fact, cubans are actually LOUDER than pacino portrayed. they are obnoxiously loud when talking, you can hear them across the street.

How did I shit all over it? I simply said I found it somewhat boring and was disappointed due to all the hype I hear over the movie, and that I find other crime based movies to definitely be more interesting.

I can understand why some people would consider it great, because of the way it shows a side of a criminal world that many people had never known before (in particular, the kind of violence that exists), which I believe was the focus of the film, which was why Brian De Palma constantly tried to get his x-rated version to have an R rating, and why after his 3rd edit was finally allowed to have the R rating, he released the initial cut anyways.

All I said was that I wasn't very interested by it. If you are going to keep bleeding out your vagina over a matter of opinion, then I am not going to debate this topic any further with you.
