Seattle (49-21) at San Antonio (52-18)

Winning without Tim Duncan hasn't been easy for San Antonio, but it has made the Spurs significantly tougher.
``There is no one in the league that feels sorry for the Spurs,'' San Antonio's Brent Barry said. ``We have to be mentally strong.''

Still battling for the top seed in the Western Conference and the best overall record in the NBA, the Spurs will shoot for their third straight win when they host the Northwest Division-leading Seattle SuperSonics.

Duncan, likely out at least another two weeks with a sprained right ankle, has been the Spurs' key player since entering the league in 1997, guiding San Antonio to two NBA titles.

The Spurs are 3-5 without their perennial All-Star power forward this season, including 2-2 since he went down with the ankle injury at Detroit on March 20.

On Sunday, Barry hit three 3-pointers during a 21-2 fourth-quarter run as the Spurs pulled away late for an impressive 83-70 victory over Houston.

Barry finished with 17 points, and has averaged 19 over the last three games, doing his part to help fill the void left by San Antonio's top scorer and rebounder.

``We all pulled together and played with some emotions, and that carried us,'' Barry said.

All-Star Manu Ginobili scored a team-high 18 points against the Rockets as the Spurs finished with five players in double figures.

San Antonio remained just one game behind Phoenix (53-17) for the top seed in the West and best record in the league. The Spurs are also just one game back of Eastern Conference-leading Miami, which is percentage points behind the Suns at 54-18.

The Sonics took two of the first three meetings from the Spurs this season with Duncan in the lineup, making Wednesday's matchup a tough test for undermanned San Antonio.

``It was tough playing them with Tim Duncan; they beat us twice,'' Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. ``The one time we beat them they were without Ray Allen. It will be a huge challenge on Wednesday.''

Allen was out with the flu when the Spurs posted a 103-84 victory at KeyArena on Jan. 31. However, the Sonics' All-Star shooting guard hit 5-of-7 3-pointers and scored 22 points Tuesday as Seattle edged Memphis 102-99.

Jerome James also scored 22 points, going 9-of-11 from the floor, for the Sonics, who clinched a playoff berth with the victory. Seattle has won six of its last seven to move within four games of conference-leading Phoenix.

The Sonics were without Rashard Lewis, their second-leading scorer, who sat out with a right foot injury, and reserve forward Danny Fortson, who is recovering from a left ankle sprain.

Look for Ginobili and Brent to takeover again.

Mar. 30 Unable to play through his sore foot last night, Rashard Lewis will remain sidelined for this evening's game, according to the Seattle Times. It's unclear if he will be ready to go on Friday.

read this blurb....if so, that's great news for us.

Spurs 31 - Sonics 18 End of 1st

Spurs rolling. Ray Allen isn't hitting much of anything, the Spurs crowd him everytime he handles the ball and he isn't finding the open man. Manu and Parker are tearing it up due to total lack of interior defense on Seattle's part. Spurs killing the Sonics on the boards and getting plenty of second chances on their posessions.

Too easy for the Spurs in the first half. They were making everything in the first quarter, and if they did miss they got the offensive rebound and reset. They scored in almost every offensive possession. Second quarter their shooting cooled down while the Sonics starting pushing with Ridnour, Wilkins and Collison, getting a nice little run to tighten up the score. Barry started pushing on the offensive end though and Manu and TP started attacking the basket again, and Spurs took huge lead. The Spurs can't sleep on the Sonics in the second half though, the Sonics have been having huge fourth quarters the last couple of games, and a 4th quarter collapse by the Spurs could kill them.

Sonics look lost out there. Mac10 needs to blow up the lineup and put his energy guys out there. Wilkins, Collison and Ridnour. I don't know what they could do about the interior defense though, there just aren't a lot of options for the Sonics.

James with the sweeping hook, still a stiff though. Manu with the sweet underhand running tear drop off glass and in, not even sure what to call that one. Sonics not hitting anything except the back of the iron. On the other hand Horry blows the baby fingeroll directly under the basketball, fouls Reggie, Sonics ball.

Flip's cooled down again, missing all his jumpers. Barry needs to start hitting some shots, not so much for the Spurs but so the Barry haters don't start bagging on him after the game. None too exciting finish to the 3rd, well, until Nazr grabbed the missed shot with one hand and threw it down. Otherwise lots of misses and turnovers. Great game so far by Tony - he probably will be sat down for quite a while in the fourth. This is exactly what we wanted - a huge lead so that our players could rest up, esp Manu & Parker because they'll need the rest with the tough April schedule.

Allen has been picking Bowen apart pretty well when they're one on one, the entire Spurs team has been shutting down Allen by collapsing on him when he tries to go inside. AD killing the Sonics offense again, Wilkins needs to take over if the Sonics want to make up any ground.

Beno with a three and then a layup, but both teams are trading baskets.

Collison with the nice spin move and hookshot up and in. Turnover on Spurs, Sonics ball down 15. Foul on Parker, still a horrible lineup for the Spurs, wake up Pop. AD with the jumper, now on 8-0 run. Flip Murray with powerful layup inside, and 1. Makes freethrow, 11-0 run

75-65 Spurs.

Pop has to be the slowest coach in the NBA when it comes to adjusting. Sonics starting to pick Spurs apart, Spurs dragging and getting sloppy, still no subs though. Pop: put in Barry, Spurs need the energy.

Spurminator
03-30-2005, 10:37 PM
I don't know why we go small when we have big leads. This has happened several times this season, and too often the lead has slipped away because teams are able to get to the basket with ease. I'd rather take my chances with two slow-ish players out there with good interior defense and make the other team hit jumpers to get back in the game.

But, Spurminator, if the Sonics suddenly get hot from outside (a distinct possibility) it could mean trouble, and forcing them to take jumpers just may do the trick. Manu must be tired - he's gonna come back in soon. Also, Pop DID want to ensure the victory by leaving Manu & TP on but Sonics got back in so now no telling what he's going to do

Finally some subs, let's see if the Spurs can adjust and stop the bleeding. TP made both freethrows but blew the short teardrop after a stop. Turnover on the other end, Spurs ball. Barry comes off screen and flattens Wilkins, turnover. Damn. Foul on other end by Allen though, another turnover. Ugly. Great job by Bones! Great pass inside to cutting Barry, misses layup but punches rebound up and in.

Great game all in all - a real statement to all who were doubting Spurs or felt that they could beat Spurs without Duncan. Yes, three of Seattle's main men were out, and they would have made a difference, especially to form an interior presence. However, I think that it was still a statement, and I hope that this will provide the Spurs with the confidence and energy they need going into April

Pretty ugly game by both teams, lots of bad misses and turnovers. Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili were able to attack the basket at will though, and racked up the points. The Sonics either didn't show up or are just cruising now that they clenched a playoff spot. Mac10 needs to tear into them, no effort on either end, especially by the starters. 76 stinking points, pathetic. Good job by the Spurs to control the boards and get all those second chance opportunities. I don't think tonights game paints a clear picture of either team, odd play by both. The Spurs did execute though, and got the Win, which is all that matters. Quiet game by Barry, I think I hear the haters getting ready to lay in to him, Ducks was already warming up. But Brent did bring in energy off the bench to counter the energy produced by the Ridnour, Wilkins, Collison lineup, and helped put an end to the huge run they had.

I'm more of a Spurs fan than Sonics fan this season, so trying to goad me isn't going to acomplish much, sorry.

Allen sucked, Flip Murray has sucked for a while (the Sonics should have tried trading him while he still had value instead of holding on to him long enough for other teams to figure him out). The Sonics sucked as a whole, while the Spurs executed, simple as that.

No problem wildbill2u. I would have included the score more often but FSN NW kept losing their scoreboard graphic and they forgot to show the score going into commercials a couple of times, so I wasn't 100% of the score a couple of times and didn't try to post it. The Spurs were blowing out the Sonics so bad that for the most part it didn't really matter anyway.

Ronald "Flip" Murray was a bench warmer on the Bucks that was involved with the Gary Payton/Ray Allen trade to match up salaries. He did pretty well in the Summer League and ended up starting at the begining of last season while Ray was out recovering from ankle surgery. He did a pretty decent job as a starter, and the Sonics were hot at the start of the season. He came off the bench however when Ray came back, and he started trying to do too much with the time he had. He turned the ball over a lot, took a lot of bad shots, and tried to win close games single-handedly, which usually involved dribbling into the quadruple team and turning it over. Actually he's a lot like Devin Brown.

A lot of his early success was due to teams putting together game plans based around Ray Allen and having trouble adjusting to playing Flip Murray instead. That only lasted so long though, and once teams figured out how to play him his effectivness dropped like some kind of lead dropping device that drops very quickly.

He had to overcome some injuries this season and just hasn't really contributed to the Sonics that much this year. He could always heat up again and put up some big scoring games, but I wouldn't look for him in the next All Star Game or two.

now that we have evened the series with Seatle and Houston, let's see we can do so against Memphis, a potential first-round opponent. if so, confidence is much boosted. hopefully Duncan can come back in time to counter Pau Gasol. Sean Marks showed some promise this game. maybe he deserves some minutes after Robert Horry, at least the present time
