South Africa, Iraq, New Zealand, Spain

Group B
USA, Italy, Brazil, Egypt

I anticipate a Brazil-Spain final. Spain comes as the number 1 team in the world (According to FIFA ranking), but Brazil has been playing great in the South American qualifiers for the World Cup... My pick is Brazil to win the tournament... what about yours?

USA had some good plays but missed some key opportunities to score. Being one down made it more difficult.

Brazil got the W, but wasn't as impressive as expected; Spain was just amaizing on their debut; and once again Italia was helped by the referees with that Red card on USA.

Spain v USA

Fifa Confederations Cup, semi-final
Venue: Free State Stadium, Bloemfontein Date: Wednesday 24 June
Start: 1930 BST Coverage: Live on BBC Three and BBC Sport website from 1900 BST

TEAM NEWS

Spain should be at full strength ahead of their first ever Confederations Cup semi-final.

Liverpool duo Pepe Reina and Albert Riera have been declared fit after a training ground collision left them both nursing minor knocks.

The USA may stick with the same 11 players who outplayed Egypt.

They are boosted by Sacha Kljestan's return from suspension, while ex-Fulham defender Carlos Bocanegra has recovered from a hamstring injury.

MATCH PREVIEW

Spain go into their semi-final meeting with the USA just 90 minutes away from stamping their name into the history books.

Last Saturday's victory over South Africa gave the European champions an unprecedented 15th successive win. If they avoid defeat to the USA they will set a new world record of 36 matches without defeat.

Spain boss Vicente del Bosque has praised predecessor Luis Aragones for the gift of a squad he inherited from him, saying: "Luis left me the toy with the batteries in." The vision shown by Aragones has made Spain the formidable force they are today.

Everyone will remember this team in the future and when we look back on it we will be even prouder. But we don't want to stop here. We are ambitious and we are hungry

The USA shocked even themselves by qualifying for the semi-finals. With a little help from Brazil, they overturned a six-goal deficit to beat Italy and Egypt to second spot.

Bob Bradley's side answered some of their recent critics with their emphatic 3-0 win over Egypt. It was also the first time during this year's tournament they finished a match with 11-men, having had a player sent-off in the defeats against Italy and Brazil.

Defender Sacha Klejstan is convinced the one area where the USA can dominate Spain is that of sheer power. He's also predicted: "It's time for them (Spain) to lose one." With spirits high in the US camp could his confident prediction come true?

The winners advance to the final in Johannesburg on Sunday where they will meet either Brazil or hosts South Africa.

The losers will contest the third place play-off match in Rustenburg earlier on Sunday.

MATCH FACTS

Head-to-head

- Spain have won all three previous encounters against the USA. They emerged 3-1 victors in the group stages of the 1950 World Cup, and claimed friendly wins in 1992 (2-0) and 2008 (1-0).

Spain

- Spain are on a world record streak of 15 consecutive wins. Italy were the last side to deny them victory within 90 minutes; they drew 0-0 in the quarter-finals of Euro 2008 before Spain won on penalties.

- Spain have also equalled the world record for most successive international matches without defeat (35), which was first set by Brazil (1993-1996).

- Coach Vicente del Bosque has won all 13 of his matches in charge. He is the first ever national team coach to start with at least 10 successive wins.

- Spain have only conceded twice during their 15-match winning streak. Belgium's Wesley Sonck and Turkey's Semih Senturk are the only players to have breached the Spanish defence in 1,350 minutes.

- A goal for David Villa would see him equal Ronaldinho's 1999 Confederations Cup feat of scoring in four straight games.

USA

- The United States are making their fourth appearance at the Confederations Cup. They finished third in both 1992 and 1999. Only Brazil (26) and Mexico (19) have played more Confederations Cup matches.

- USA became the first country to progress from a Confederations Cup group stage with three points since the introduction of the current eight-team format in 1997.

- The only goal the USA have ever scored against Spain was 59 years ago. John Souza scored after 17 minutes in their 3-1 World Cup defeat in 1950.

That's true, its all about the spirit and right motivation. Australia at the worldcup 2006 and South korea at the worldcup in 2002 are good proof of that! They both got the best trainer, hiddink, who is able to give a team that needed right spirit and motivation for the players to believe and fight.

This team is reminding me of the 1980 US hockey team. No chance to beat the Russians...then they went out there, believing in each other, and pulled off the impossible. I will definitely continue to watch this game. Here's hoping that this tournament, no matter what happens, will pull in a few new soccer fans here in the US.

Late to this because I was tied up with some stuff yesterday, but I have to say that was a great win for the USA -- particularly at this point in time, when the confidence of the Americans seemed to be reaching some significant lows after the drubbing in Costa Rica, the eeked out win over Honduras, the second half withering against Italy, and the curb-stomping at the hands of the Brazilians. Beating Egypt soundly was an overdue result for a side that frequently struggles with inferior opponents in these sorts of tournaments; qualifying for the semifinals in this tournament was mostly a matter of some really good fortune. Beating Spain impressively, however, seems a possible turning point for USA Soccer; if Brazil get through and USA can post a good result in the Final (and maintain the sliver of attention that yesterday's result brought) the momentum will be significant -- better still to get a result at Azteca when qualifying resumes.

Brazil wins, but not impressively. This highlights the difference between a team like the US and Brazil. When the Brazilians don't show up, they can still usually find a way to win while the US...I'll just refer you to the first round of this tournament. I don't think the US wins against Brazil, but, as fromwaydowntown said, a good effort will go a long way toward beating the Mexicans at Azteca. That match will be far more important than the confed cup, with the US looking to end it's winless ways in the smog-choked altitude of Mexico City. I believe the key for the Americans against Brazil is the midfield getting back to help on D and taking advantage of set pieces. For Brazil, they just need to counter off US mistakes(of which there will be many) and finish. Key players will be Dempsey for the US and Robinho for the Brazilians, who was lackluster against RSA. If the American midfield allows the Brazilians to pound away on the US end like they did the Spaniards it could get ugly.
My score, 2-1 Brazil.
As for where Ronaldinho is, Dunga(brazils manager) dropped him from the roster

now usa are contenders for next year :tu
Woah there, impressive performance and great win for you guys, but don´t get over excited. In the world cup you have to go through not one, but several games of such difficulty, and you´re out at the first mistake. I don´t think you´re quite there yet. Still, if you keep it up I could see you there in the not so distant future, considering your progression and sheer market size.

If the USA somehow manages to win a FIFA world cup, football (or soccer) would go from beign the most popular sport in the world to the only sport in the world.

Usa is still no world cup top level contender. Its all about luck and the motivation they have now why they are playing so well + Brasil, Spain all those players have had a really hard tough season this year in the top european leagues, so they are tired and do not care about this confed cup so much. USA on the other hand has full motivation, the right spirit and they want to show what they've got.

US players now know that they can beat anybody and I'm sure the US will eventually be big in football some day, it's too big of a country and every person on FIFA wants them to do well, so I'm pretty sure this won't be the last time we hear about them.

That's true, imagine if football was very popular in the states and attractive for the youth with good youth training programs just as they have for basketball and american football, then the usa would have been definitely one of the dominating football countries in the world I think.
