The Dallas Mavericks are the latest team to hold a free-agent camp, with the event taking place this week at their home arena, the American Airlines Center. The sessions are being supervised by Dallas head coach Rick Carlisle and President of Basketball Operations Donnie Nelson. Out of the 20 invited players, a total of ten have played in the NBA D-League in their careers, and all ten have played in the past two NBA D-League seasons. Here is a quick breakdown of the participants who have NBA D-League experience.

Blake Ahearn – Ahearn has been one of the top guards in the NBA D-League over the past two years, earning Rookie of the Year honors in 2007-08. He earned a GATORADE call-up to the Spurs earlier this season, was co-MVP of the NBA D-League All-Star Game in Phoenix, and earned first team All-League honors.

Andre Brown – A call-up from Sioux Falls in 2006-07, Brown spent the next two years in the NBA with Seattle and Memphis before returning to the NBA D-League this year with Austin. A 6-9 forward, he averaged 14.9 points and 9.5 rebounds before signing with a team in Turkey.

Mickael Gelabale – The French forward averaged 16.0 points for the D-Fenders in their final six games of the 2008-09 season. He was a member of the Seattle Supersonics for the previous two seasons.

Brandon Heath – A 6-4 forward, Heath played in all 50 games for the D-Fenders this season, his second as a pro, averaging 15.4 points per game.

Herbert Hill – The 55th overall pick in the 2007 NBA Draft, Hill split the 08-09 season between Bakersfield and Tulsa. The 6-8 forward finished with a line of 9.3 points and 5.8 rebounds in the NBA D-League.

Trey Johnson – A 6-5 guard, Johnson emerged as one of the league top guards in 2008-09, his second with the Bakersfield Jam. He averaged 20.8 points per game and earned a GATORADE Call-Up to the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Trent Strickland – Strickland started all 50 games for Rio Grande Valley and earned honorable mention All-League honors in 2008-09. The 6-5 guard averaged 17.5 points and 6.4 rebounds.

Yuta Tabuse – Tabuse, the first Japanese player to play in the NBA, played three seasons in the NBA D-League between 2005 and 2008 with Albuquerque, Bakersfield, and Anaheim. The 5-9 guard returned to Japan for this past season and was named Guard of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year in the Japanese League.

Chris Taft – A second round pick by Golden State in 2005, the 6-11 Taft played for Rio Grande Valley for a short time in 2007-08 before suffering a dislocated ankle that ended his season.

Anthony Tolliver – A 6-9 center, Tolliver has played in parts of the last two seasons with the Iowa Energy. He joined Iowa this season after starting the 2008-09 campaign with the Spurs, and then went on to receive a GATORADE Call-Up from the Hornets. Tolliver then finished the season in Turkey with Galatasaray, one of Europe’s top teams.

Other notable players in the camp in Dallas included NBA veteran guard Jeff McInnis and former Nets and Raptors forward Hassan Adams.

We discussed this on the Think Tank on Austin Nichols thread IIRC...

It seems that to play on the Mavs, Spurs corporate knowledge give you extra chances...

Oh, sorry.

They got a fair number of decent prospects in that camp at the Tolliver/Ahearn level or higher. The Spurs would do well to put together a mini camp roster with similar talent.

Best of luck to both. Wish Tolliver could have hit a shot, he hustled like crazy.

hustle does not make up for lack of talent though
all players should hustle

That's a stacked free agent camp. Hopefully the Spurs can do something similar.
