Buffalo was relocating to San Diego, and Levin wanted to own a team on the West Coast. So Levin basically traded teams with Brown/Mangurian. However, my understanding of the legal technicalities is that actually the Boston Celtics moved to California, and the Buffalo Braves moved to Boston, and then the teams executed a complete inventory exchange.

That means, using LA logic, the LA Clippers are 13-time Champions. :smokin

They basically swapped out rosters...the members of the 1977 Buffalo Braves found themselves in green and white as members of the 1978 Boston Celtics, while the members of the 1977 Celtics found themselves playing in San Diego as the Clippers in 1978.

So the Celtics and players never moved and keep their history intact as the Boston Celtics...they just got a NEW OWNER, happens in sports all the time.

When dealing with business law, the new owner of a franchise is also the new rightful owner of the franchise's history as it is considered an integral part of the company and inseparable. That's why the Lakers own the rights to claim all 15 titles, it's still the same franchise. No city really owns titles or rings, the franchises do. If the Celtics franchise moves to another city some day, their titles go with them as they are the owners, not the city. That's why the Washington Wizards have 1 Championship, because they own the Bullets Championship. The Kings have 1 Championship in 1951 as the Rochester Royals...the Titles move with the Franchise aka business.

So in summary this Braves/Celtics owner swap, the NEW owner of the Celtics could brag about his 13 championships. while the new owner of the new Clippers could brag about owning the Clippers. :lol

I was living in Boston at the time it happened, and remember reading the story in the Globe breaking it down.

The actual legal execution was that the teams did not swap owners, but the owners swapped names, assets, trademarks, employees, etc. (except for a 7-man trade between the teams that resulted in the Celtics getting Tiny Archibald :dizzy).

I don't know why it was done that way, it seems more convoluted, but Dave Stern was the lawyer who did the deal. It always reported that the owners swapped teams, but that's not the way the contract was written.
