By Jeff McDonald

Couple of odds and ends here at Courtside today.

First, the NBA's Summer League schedule is out. For those of you diehards planning on making the trip to Vegas next month, the Spurs' entry will play five games:

July 12 -- vs. the Hornets at 1 p.m.
July 14 -- vs. the Nuggets at 7 p.m.
July 16 -- vs. the Thunder at 5:30 p.m.
July 18 -- vs. the Trail Blazers at 7:30 p.m.
July 19 -- vs. the Grizzlies at 5 p.m.

All games will be played at the Thomas and Mack Center or the adjacent Cox Pavilion. All times are Vegas time.

The roster for the Spurs entry, which will be coached by assistant Don Newman, is still in flux. George Hill and Ian Mahinmi, summer league veterans both, are expected to headline the team.

Also today, it was announced that Tony Parker will play in a celebrity soccer game hosted by Steve Nash later this summer. The so-called "Showdown in Chinatown," held June 24 in New York, features Nash and U.S. soccer star Claudio Reyna. Proceeds benefit the Steve Nash Foundation and the Claudio Reyna Foundation.

Other NBA stars slated to participate, along with Nash and Parker, are Jason Kidd, Grant Hill, Chris Bosh and Raja Bell.

Show down in China Town is going to be sweet. Lots of amazing soccer players will be there as well.

Please God do not let TP roll his ankle after getting chopped up.

Wasn't Newman the same one who for some reason refused to play Sanikidze a couple years back?
I was hoping for Bud or Quin.

Great news about Hill and Mahinmi. Beno only played once in summer league and that didn't help matters. Hopefully Hill can shine and Mahinmi can stay healthy.

And yeah, Newman was a disaster of a coach last time. He made those games worthless because he subbed so much that no one could get into any type of rhythm. Hopefully he learned from his mistakes and will actually allow the team to play instead of acting like he's coaching a YMCA team.

That's why I demand TP to be the goalie.

I would have really liked if Snyder coached them, but oh well, or even Bud.

And the soccer game could be a chance for TP to recruit Bosh! :hat

Kinda the point of the summer league is to examine players... You can't do that if they never play. Plus, its not like Pop doesn't do the same crazy thing, maybe its just preparing the players for their potential role with the Spurs :downspin:

Exactly. Shit, since he´s obviously trying to end whatever is left of his ankles, why doesn´t he try skydiving while he´s at it?

No, it's not the same thing. He was doing stuff like taking five guys out and putting five guys in. He'd put in a guy, the guy would hit two shots in a row and then he'd get pulled. There was no way to evaluate who was doing what, and some guys never got any burn, despite looking good in all five of their one minute stints on the floor.

Who cares? I just want him to work on playing point guard. Like I said last year when he wasn't making baskets: We all KNOW he's a scorer, so scoring should be the least of anyone's worries. Besides, if he's going to have a shooting slump, SL is absolutely the best time to do it.
