All the angst here and on the internets about how Obama should respond to what's going on in Iran reminded me of the argument John Adams had with Thomas Jefferson regarding whether the U.S. should offer support for the French Revolution

It's a classic heart vs. head debate; your heart is with Jefferson and his desire for freedom and democracy to flourish; your head is with Adams, as he recognizes that the differing history and cultures of both countries matter, and that successful revolutions can't be managed alone by a few elites in a top-down manner.

The government, the real power, is the Supreme Leader and all clerics and their "religious" thugs.

Mousavi finally getting in wouldn't be a new government, just a new president, who doesn't really have that much power, would be overridden by the Supreme Leader and clerics if he was too progressive, like Rafsanjani was.
