Celtics shop Rondo, Allen (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slug=aw-celticspistons062209&prov=yhoo&type=lgns)
By Adrian Wojnarowski

The Boston Celtics appear willing to make major roster changes to balance a chance for a championship run and future financial flexibility.

The Celtics offered Ray Allen and Rajon Rondo to the Detroit Pistons for a package that included Richard Hamilton, Tayshaun Prince and Rodney Stuckey, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

Boston general manager Danny Ainge and Detroit’s Joe Dumars never spoke, but rather the Celtics had a lower-level executive make the pitch to a Pistons official over the past weekend, league sources said. Detroit immediately rejected the idea, and it never advanced to the two top executives speaking about particulars.

This isn’t an uncommon occurrence for a GM like Ainge to dispatch an underling to make that kind of a call, if for no other reason to give the top executive some level of deniability that he’s shopping his stars.

This isn’t the first time that Allen, a six-time All-Star, has been mentioned in trade talks this summer. Allen, who will soon turn 34, has an expiring contract of nearly $20 million, for next season. Rondo, 24, a rapidly developing point guard, has been publically termed off-limits by Ainge in trade discussion this summer. Nevertheless, his name found a way into this conversation. Rondo averaged 11.9 points, 8.2 assists and 5.2 rebounds in the regular season, and had three triple-doubles in the Celtics’ playoff run this season.

Boston is unlikely to re-sign Allen to a long-term extension next summer, and there is belief around the league that the Celtics have hesitancy about committing a long-term, expensive contract to Rondo.

There has been some friction with Rondo, largely based on maturity. No issues with him are insurmountable, but Ainge has never minded shopping ideas around the league. Nevertheless, it’s hard to imagine a deal that Boston could do with these two players that would give them a chance to stay a championship contender around Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce.

For the Pistons, this deal makes little sense, unless they wanted to let Allen’s expiring deal gain even more salary cap space for the free-agent class of 2010. The idea of trading his three best returners for an expiring contract and one good young player wasn’t worth considering for Dumars, sources said.

Only a year removed from a championship and they're willing to part with two key pieces of that team?

Unbelievable and idiotic.

Wow. If that were to happen, the Celtics would be a beast I think.

Stuckey, Rip, Pierce, Garnett, and Perkins with Prince coming off the bench. :tu Nice.

No way I'd make that trade if I was Ainge... and I wouldn't make it if I was Dumars neither. Allen's too old for Detroit, and no way does Stuckey+Hamilton+Prince equal the level of talent of Rondo+Allen for next season. Boston already mortgaged their future by trading Jefferson; they can't have it both ways.

Is Ainge an idiot? I wouldn't trade Rondo. By all means, go ahead and do it, Boston.

Ainge was already an idiot for trading Al Jefferson, Gerald Green + many many picks for Kevin Garnett for an one and done. Ray Allen after 2010 could be signed for cheap if he wanted to stay in Boston. That will allow them to give Rondo the money he wants.

I think thr dumb mobe was trading for Allen. I think Jeff Green is better than him at this stage in their careers.

I hope they do trade Rondo though. He's one of my favorite players to watch. Its hard to root for him wearing green, though.

This will put the Celts back into mediocrity for another 2 decades (and thats assuming everything goes our way by then). Im against dealing Rondo unless Tony Parker, Chris Paul, or Deron Williams are available and none of them are.

One and done or not, they won a championship making that move. You cant call Ainge an idiot for that trade when in resulted in a championship. Considering they were irrelevant for 20 years, it was a move that had to be made. The building for the future idea just wasnt working for this team.

Allen has an expiring contract. You get rid of Rips/Prince deals and get even more cap space in 2010. Rip/Prince are role players who are easily expendable.

Rondo is completely overrated right now after the playoffs. His value will never be higher than it is now.

Wtf... how could this make sense? Rondo is the most promising young player we have. You're willing to give him up on a crappy trade that certainly won't guarantee a title, and then leave the Celtics in basketball wilderness for a decade?

Wait... this article was written by Adrian Wojnarowski? This is the same hack that said that Gasol wasn't soft anymore. I take it with a huge grain of salt. In fact, I take it with a dump truck full of salt.

Get mad if you want and try to shoot the messenger but Yahoo and Woj have been on point the last 18 months.

Been scooping things in the sports world - especially basketball-wise (NBA/NCAA) like crazy and putting ESPN to shame.

If the Lakers win the championship...

I'll leave this forum for life.

I am doing this to prove to everyone how much of a non-factor the Lakers are in the playoffs. They haven't accomplished anything. They just want to come out, shoot some hoops, and BS their way to everything. Not going to get it done in the Finals. Orlando will win the championship. There are no All-Stars other than Kobe on this Laker team. Not an intimidating lineup. Just a bunch of a jump shooters who score off Kobe double teams.

Pussy...

I agree. They accomplished something through those trades that they may not have if they stuck it out with their old roster. It was a bold move that paid off. The Celtics, IMO, just need to add a few key pieces and stay injury free to be a contender. They do need to start looking at building toward the future though.

have you ever fucking watched rondo? he is selfish. he is the worst defender at the 1 not named derrick rose. that day when they both shot like 70 percent wasnt because they were both on fire hitting diffucult shots. it was because they "guarded" each other.
