Spurs draft haul has been underwhelming of late (http://www.mysanantonio.com/sports/spurs/Spurs_draft_haul_has_been_underwhelming_of_late.ht ml)

Since taking Tony Parker in 2001, George Hill and Ian Mahinmi are the only draft picks to stick with the Spurs, and Mahinmi has played in only six games. Marcus Williams, a 2007 pick and an Austin Toros star, came back last season after being waived, but he’s an unrestricted free agent. Here’s a look at where recent Spurs draft picks are now, what value could have been had and who the Spurs passed up to take Hill — who averaged 5.7 points in 77 games as a rookie — and Mahinmi:

After Hill and Mahinmi

Hill (No. 26 in 2008): Heat took Mario Chalmers (10 ppg, 4.9 apg, 82 games) eight picks later. ... Three picks after Chalmers, the Bucks took Luc Mbah a Moute, a 6-foot-8 forward who played 82 games, starting 52, averaging 7.2 ppg and 5.9 rpg.

Mahinmi (No. 28 in 2005): David Lee (No. 30) and his 10.9 ppg and 9 rpg would look good next to Tim Duncan. ... Brandon Bass (No. 33) has improved the past two years in Dallas. ... Monta Ellis (No. 40) averages 16 ppg. ... Louis Williams’ (No. 45) scoring average jumped to 12.2 the past two years while playing 161 games for the 76ers. ... Ryan Gomes (No. 50) hasn’t missed a game in two years with the awful Timberwolves, and he averages 11.6 ppg and 5.3 rpg.

Goran Dragic, No. 45 in 2008

Traded on draft day to Phoenix for Malik Hairston (No. 48) and No. 37 pick in today’s draft. Dragic averaged 4.5 ppg and 2.0 apg in 55 games for the Suns. Hairston, waived after playing 15 games with the Spurs, averaged 22.9 ppg, 5.5 rpg and 3.7 apg with the Austin Toros.

Later value: None

James Gist, No. 57 in 2008

Spurs still have the rights to the 6-9 forward who averaged 13 ppg and 6 rpg for Angelico Biella in Italy this season.

Later value: None

Tiago Splitter, No. 28 in 2007

The Spurs still own his rights, but he’s with Tau Cerámica in Spain. He averaged 14.5 ppg and 6.2 rpg in 52 games in 2008-09 season that ended with a loss to Barcelona in the Euroleague quarterfinals.

Later value: Carl Landry (9.2 ppg, 5.0 rpg for Rockets in 2008-09); Glen Davis (15.8 ppg and 5.6 rpg in 2009 playoffs for Celtics); Marc Gasol (11.9 ppg, 7.4 rpg for Grizzlies in 2008-09); Ramon Sessions (11.6 ppg, 6.0 apg in two seasons for Bucks)

Giorgos Printezis, No 58 in 2007

Traded to Toronto on draft day for a 2008 second-round pick used to draft Dragic. Printezis, a Greek Olympian in 2008, averaged 9.4 ppg and 5.7 rpg for Olympiakos this season.

Later value: None

Damir Markota, No. 59 in 2006

Traded to Milwaukee on draft day for a 2007 second-round pick used to select Marcus Williams. Markota, who spent 30 games with the Bucks in 2006-07, played for two teams in Spain this season.

Later value: None

It's impossible to always draft a player like Parker and Ginobili at a late first round draft. Spurs FO have done a good job drafting Hill, Mahinmi, Gist and Hairston.

Well we're not like the Blazers who up until last year had a lot of lottery picks because they sucked ass.

Ummm, they do realize those are almost all 2nd round picks right? (Except for Splitter of course) And mostly late 2nd round picks at that.

there is potential in mailk hairston, trust me on that. he reminds me of antoine walker in a way, he just needs to work on his jump shot and be more aggressive taking the ball to the point.

but the ahtleticism is there. the potential is there.

exactly. if anything the front office has been good with the draft. Ginobili, Parker, Hill, Hairston etc. These all have been low draft picks and they look to be great contributors to the Spurs. Cant say the same about any other team.

Sure they have. But the point is there has been nothing in between the Parker draft of 2001 and Mahinmi draft of 2005. The cupboard was been quite bare during that stretch.

And let's not forget how the FO passed over Josh Howard in 2003, in an effort to clear salary room for the failed J-Kidd chase. Still the dumbest move by the FO ever.
