is there any tobacco/FDA discussion going on anwhere on ST?
I don't smoke cigarrettes, but I like occasional cigars. I wonder what is going to happen to the cigar industry? All the cigars I buy are imported, so I don't see how the FDA can make them have less nicotine...

I mean, isn't nicotine already in tobacco leaves? to reduce the nicotine in cigars, will they now be constructed of one-half tobacco leaf filler, and one-half banana leaf filler, or what?

thanks, obama. every day is some other god damn dumb ass law.

PS: IT'S FOR THE CHILDREN !!

edit: I plan to make a massive Cigars International order real quick.
Note to self - buy another humidor...

Just another way to expand the role of government. But this was pretty much a no brainer. One of the few things in llife that republicans and democrats can agree on is that they hate smokers. So here's an opportunity for them to join hands and tout bipartisanship.

On a side note I now understand why Altria was in such a hurry to spin off Philip Morris International.

CI is great
What will the part about no more flavors in tobacco products do to Jonathan Drew's operation over at Drew Estates?

There's something odd about the FDA regulating the safety of an inherently unsafe product. And you're right that once they start regulating content, there's no telling where it goes.

If they screw up your cigars too much, the black market for traditionally made smokes goes through the roof. Cigarette smokers OTOH are less fixated on quality/purity, so the tobacco industry probably takes less of a hit if they're legally required to alter the adulteration of their product. But who knows.

They still make those? I ate those all the time as a kid. I thought those went away a long time ago.

I hate our government... Why do they find it so hard to let individuals decide what is good or isn't for them? If I wanna smoke a cigar, or a cigarette then I should have the right.

maybe, but at least during Bush's 8 years, he said he would veto any FDA regulation of tobacco.

Notice how obama labels it the FAMILY Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act.

I don't normally smoke flavored cigars. The main thing I am wondering about is the FDA limiting the amount of nicotine in tobacco products. I mean, how do you limited the nicotine in a fat cigar that ONLY contains natural tobacco leaf filler? Do you use something else as filler?

will imported cigars be exempt? How many kids cough up big bucks for imported cigars?

Two words

National. Healthcare.

The government will have incentive to make a healthier population. Next on the agenda I believe, obesity, fast food and body mass index.

So, all the nonsmokers that laughed their ass of because they couldnt stand 2nd hand smoke will have their day in the sun soon enough. I wonder which one is easier to get a handle on? Hmmm...

Yeah. I hate that too. People have a god given right to live as cleanly or as nastily as they desire.

Yet another example of why we should never allow our government any control over anything not laid out in the constitution.

With that said, if an individual state wants to have state provided health care, go for it. If they want to limit foods, or cigarettes or whatever, go for it. I'm not gonna live there...
