this is the first time i've had wood floors, at first i was scared with the dog scratching them, which he has done already, but i over it now

the floors are much easier to keep clean and add value to the house, carpet is just nasty

we did save some $$$$ by removing the vinyl and carpet ourselves

I had wood floors for many years in Los Angeles, but never since I've lived in Texas. We haven't really decided if we are going for wood. The downstairs is beautifully tiled so we are obviously leaving that alone, but upstairs needs new flooring. I kind of like carpeting for bedrooms, but wood is so pretty.

we picked hardwood because of the look and ease of keeping it clean, carpet can be just nasty sometimes (we have a dog)

as far as the difference between the different types of woods, you would have to ask my partner about that (he did the research) - we wanted cherry and went with idonesian instead of brazilian - it was a little cheaper and a slightly different color

termites are not really that much of a problem here - the house was inspected before settlement and there were none - we'll keep an eye out for them though

they are real hardwood and we've ordered rugs and runners for the heavy traffic areas, so they should hold up fine - plus real wood can be refinished more times than the other ( i think the laminate )

Wow that's awesome. We don't own the house we currently live in. We got it on a lease-to-own situation, and after a year decided we didn't want to own it. We have been leasing now for five years+. So, this is a great opportunity for us. We are actually going to be paying a lot more than we do currently but we are also going from 1700 sq feet to 4000++ sq feet.

Bro I have been refinishing floors since 1989 real hardwood floors comes in bundles like these,

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_TFtCafxuIpg/SIuixV1m3DI/AAAAAAAABU4/XBG5uarBehA/s400/P7260668.JPG

After many hours of installing one board at a time,

http://www.rd.com/images/tfhimport/2000/20000101_Hardwood_Floor_page002img001.jpg

they need to be sanded then stained.

http://blog.nj.com/jersey/floorisdown.jpg

It cost about 700 dollars a room. It last for 100s of years and is bullet proof. You can find it in very old homes built in the 1800s and early 1900s

The stuff you have is called pergo Laminateits, its a pre manufactured wood already stained. http://www.jerryrig.com/img.php?263 and you cant sand it you just replace the wood as needed.

Real wood.

If you think carpets are nasty, stay far away from berber. I have no idea why that stuff is so desirable. I hated it when owners installed it in the rentals we managed, and I especially hate it in the apartment I'm currently renting. I vacuum my apartment at least twice a week and it's still impossible to get the carpets all the way clean -- the loops in berber trap dirt/dust/pet hair like crazy.

I own an old rental home where the floor started out like this:

http://img205.imagevenue.com/loc419/th_25231_wood_122_419lo.jpg (http://img205.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=25231_wood_122_419lo.jpg)

Sorry that's so huge. I had it sanded and refinished, which wasn't too expensive because the house is only 900 sq.ft. Now the floors are so gorgeous that I've turned into a rather meddling landlord, but so far so good.

In my own home, I have Pergo on the entire lower level. I wanted wood, but with heavy kid traffic and big dogs, I decided to wait a few years on it. It's pretty amazing stuff, 5 years later and it doesn't have a single scratch and shines beautifully with just a damp mop. Carpet is just too nasty; I sweep/dust my floor everyday to keep up with dog hair and dust (I live near a quarry)....and the thought that I only vacuumed every other day is pretty gross!

To me they are like apartments, and I think if you wanted to own something, you should buy an actual house. Townhomes are nice, but I don't like the fact that they attached to other homes.

Buying detached homes is not an option in some areas. I have lived in a few spots on the east coast and I can tell you that apartments and townhomes are the only affordable option for a lot of people. Where I lived in New Jersey for awhile, a detached home would set you back nearly a million dollars. And they only came with septic tanks!

I think gayabc lives in the DC area if memory serves. Believe me, if he wants to live in a 'good' neighborhoods in the Northern VA/DC/Maryland area, townhomes are a great option. You don't want to know what a nice detached house goes for in some of those counties. :wow

When I moved last month, that was a primary reason I picked this place, nice hardwood floors. The place I was at before had carpet and I hated it, it never felt like they were clean no matter how much you vacuum. Hardwood is much better.

i'm originally from texas and thought the same thing when i first moved up here (dc/maryland) - single family homes here are very expensive (at least the ones we liked) - we looked and did our research for months and came to the conclusion that with our lifestyle and long work days that a townhouse worked better for us - we found one that is in a small subdivision and an end-unit, 2 car garage and decent size backyard - so we are only attached to one other unit and the sound/insulation they put in these is amazing - have not heard the neighbors as of yet and they have kids :lol

Yay! Home improvements! We're in the process of doing some stuff now. We've updated the 1/2 bath and have updated 1/2 of the kids' bathroom. Just finding the time to finish the other half (vacation and hubby busy). I can't wait to get rid of the carpet, but the kitchen counter tops come first ( I still have mauve formica. Fugly, but are in great shape). Problem is, my husband thinks he's got time to do the floors himself. Um, yeah. Anyway, we'll get the house pulled together in 5 years and then we'll move! :lol

Here's the 1/2 bath. I heart my faucet so, but damn does it show water stains, not to mention limescale. I will only use vinegar to clean it.

btw, we had the kids' tub reglazed by miraclemethod.com and I am more than pleased with the outcome. For some reason, whoever lived here first had a beige plastic tub put in. We had it redone in a white glaze and it looks great. Really had toyed with the idea of replacing it, but that would have been $$$ I wasn't willing or was necessary to spend. We also put the dark shower fixtures, which I'm sure I'll regret eventually!!

thanks! I really wanted a vanity that was bigger for storage as we only had a pedestal sink in there before, but it was too large for the space. The lame thing was that it came with a shelf (removable) which we can't use because of the pipes. D'oh! I just painted the mirror. It was originally gold and I painted it black and you can see some of the gold coming through. It really ties in with the fixtures.

I think that faucet cost almost as much as the vanity! Faucets ain't cheap!

If you pay for the canvasing and framing I will let you have one for free. I donate most of my shit anyway. Go here on the prices watch out the larger you go the more they charge.

send some art in!
You need to go for it! those people are hurting for anything original. I have seen art sell that wouldn't even make it on most photo shop websites. they have all kinds of categories. Photo.hand painted.oil.water, charcoal.prints computer prints, etc...

Try and enter the BROOKLYN INTERNATIONALE

You get exposure. look at some of the cheesy entries.

I will send you a photo bucket folder pick what you want. I don't give out more than 3 prints so it will be 1 of 3 ,2 of 3, or 3 of 3
you will also receive a COA and index finger print.

I left you my cell 779-0693 so we don't have to hijack this floor topic. :tu

I saw where the folks from polyvore.com stole some of your images.

Is that common practice in the art world?

The folks at Photoshopcontest.com like to bitch a lot. bottom-line you put something on the www its gone baby gone. For some reason people today still don't get it. Many of the moderators are Aussie or from Canada they don't understand sarcasm and have a short fuse like RuffnReadyozstyle.
Its true I have been banned twice.

I lost about 8 art prints to that site but to me, they are really worthless without my signature.

We tore out our carpet a few years ago and had some vato put in tile and it came out great. Now we are going to do the bedrooms.

I like the floors.

But are you keeping the cabinets the same color? I'd go darker and add a white marble/granite countertop. And get some hardware for those cabinets.

Another option which I really like instead of carpet for bedrooms is cork. Soft and unexpectedly warm. Only problem I've seen with it is that it will fade/spot if in direct sunlight for most of the day.

I have about 8 different projects half done. I re-did my fireplace last winter and never finished the hearth. Some day.

A day to tear out the tile surround and prep and a day to put up the stone:
