View Full Version : Ron Artest coming to Cleveland?

The Cavaliers have a lot of options in free agency, but one of their first calls was somewhat surprising.
According to several league sources, the Cavs have been been in contact with Houston Rockets free agent forward Ron Artest. It even included a face-to-face pitch from LeBron James on Tuesday night in Los Angeles, as both were in Southern California for various events.
Artest, who is an unrestricted free agent after his contract that paid him $7.4 million with the Rockets expired, is being courted by several teams. Artest is believed to prefer to play for a championship contender and in addition to the Rockets the Cavs may be getting some competition from the Boston Celtics for his services.
With the Rockets facing the uncertain injury status of stars Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady, it is unclear how hard they will try to push to re-sign Artest. They are pursuing Orlando Magic free agent center Marcin Gortat.
The Rockets have had interest in Cavs free agent Anderson Varejao in the past, which opens up some possibilities of a sign-and-trade scenario - though the Cavs have said they want to re-sign Varejao.
Artest played for coach Mike Brown when Brown was the associate head coach of the Indiana Pacers from 2003-05. He is the type of forward the Cavs would be interested in. He has the ability to stretch the floor because he has range to out to the 3-point line. He is an excellent defensive player and a former NBA Defensive Player of the Year who can guard a wide variety of defenders, which would fit nicely with James, who can do the same.
What isn't clear is how Artest would fit with the Cavs. He does not have a background that fits the type of players the Cavs usually attempt to acquire. In addition to his role in the infamous brawl in Detroit five years ago, has been suspended for pleading no contest to a domestic violence charge two years ago. In all, he's been suspended nearly a dozen times by the NBA.
However, he has been a good citizen for the last two years and helped carry the Rockets into the second round of the playoff last season.
He averaged 15.6 points, 4.3 rebounds and 4.2 assists for the Rockets in 2008-09.

The fans won't be the ones that make the decision, the Celtics are. If they think it's a good move, which they apparently do, they'll make that move. They need another big and a rotation of KG, Perkins and Sheed sounds damn fine to me.
If Ron doesn't sign with houston he's signing with LA..
Besides his twitter said he wouldn't do any mid level shit, if Cleveland wants to sign him to 10 + mil, they are welcome to

Do you think Sheed wants to be a bench player on the Celtics or a starter in San Antonio? Keep in mind he's already said he wants to play in warmer weather than Detroit, and he begged Detroit to trade him to San Antonio during last season.

How would he sign with the Lakers if he's "not doing any mid level shit"? He probably wouldn't have a choice since hardly any teams have cap space. But it's a moot point since I'm sure he'll re-sign with Houston.

I dont know about this. Theyve already removed one shooter from the starting line up by replacing Big Z with Shaq, and now they want to put another guy who needs the ball in his hands to be effective and cant really shoot.
Plus, they already played a combination of Varejao/Wallace at the 4, who cant shoot. You have to play to LeBron's strengths and surround him with shooters, or guys that will allow him to get to the rim the easiest way possible.

The rockets aren't looking into financial room, they have more than enough cap for the 2010 season anyways, Yao brings a lot of money in from china
Let me guess this must be your credible source that cited the Amare to cleveland rumor, i mean you really can't be that stupid? :lol

Yao is set to be coming back the 2nd half of the season, besides we aren't going to rely solely on that. We are probably going to look into some major trades. You are forgetting that our team even without Yao took the best team in the league to 7 games. No fluky Cleveland shit everybody knew about.
Yao sucks and the rockets don't need him. Just under mcgrady they have had a 68% winning record since he got here.

We all know, Sheed is a Spur and they'll win the Championship.
All I know is the Celtics have shown far more interest as of now then any other teams and if he has buddies on the team and is guaranteed a certain amount of minutes he could go there. I have no clue what Sheed wants or is thinking.

says who? ESPN? ESPN doesn't have contact with Rasheed Wallace, so how do they know Boston has shown more interest? And if you know as much about basketball as you act like you do, you would know that San Antonio never reports the people they're going after, yet somehow the media knows they're going after Rasheed, so if the media found out about it, San Antonio must be going hard. Pop loves Rasheed, Rasheed loves Pop, Rasheed wants to play next to Timmy...that's all we know. Not saying he won't end up in Boston...just saying I wouldn't say Boston is going harder than anyone just because Ric Bullshit Bucher says it, while Broussard is saying the Spurs are more likely his destination.

lol..yeah..I'm such a homer...you obviously don't read anything I say...I'm the guy who said Kobe Bryant is the best player in the league. I'm the guy who congratulated the Lakers all through the playoffs, even though I didn't want them to win. And how is anything I've said in favor with the Spurs? All I said was to not read into everything you see online...they're not with the stars..they're not with the agents..they don't know everything. The Spurs could be in constant contact with Rasheed. Pop could be at Rasheed's house right now. Rasheed could be at Pop's house right now...we know nothing..and we won't know anything until it happens. Not saying he won't sign with Boston..just saying we know absolutely nothing about it..the only one who knows is Rasheed, so unless you're Rasheed, you don't know anything. I know you're just hatin, and you're probably praying the Spurs don't sign Rasheed, so you're on your defenses, but at least TRY to make some sense.

Selective reading. Rasheed asked teams not to disturb him after midnight when FA started...they did. That might upset him. It might not, as well. I hope Sheed lands in SA, I really do. I'll I'm saying is from what's been reported KG has called Sheed a ton to try and get him there and Danny went and talked to him the second he could. I haven't heard any reports like that from the Spurs. That doesn't mean he's going to sign with either of those teams, he could end up in Cleveland or Orlando but as of right now it seems like the Celtics feel they need to counter with what the Cavs and Magic have done and are going hard for Sheed. That kills you, so you're trying your hardest to deflect it, it makes sense coming from someone like you.

Second off, I ain't tryin to fight with you...I'm trying to say that none of us know anything about what's really going on. In every FA period, the Spurs have never showed their cards. They've never said what they've done to sign someone...it's always hidden. And who is reporting that KG called Sheed? KG? Sheed? And how do we know Duncan isn't calling Sheed? Duncan and Sheed have always been good friends, a lot longer than KG and Sheed. Don't act like you're behind the scenes and you know what's going on..you don't know a damn thing...just like I don't. While the Rockets made their pursuit of a center their top free agent priority, Ron Artest seemed ready to move on when a message appeared on Twitter late Wednesday attributed to him.
The message — "THANKS A LOT HOUSTON I HAD A LOT OF FUN." — seemed to indicate that Artest had chosen to sign elsewhere. The Rockets, however, were given an indication that Artest did not write the message.
Artest’s agent David Bauman had said that returning to Houston was Artest’s top choice and that he did not expect or request a late Tuesday meeting when the free agent period was ready to begin.
The Rockets, however, had made their pursuit of Orlando center Marcin Gortat their top priority.
Artest averaged 17.1 points on 40.1 percent shooting , 5.2 rebounds and 3.3 assists last season, initially coming off the bench when Tracy McGrady and Shane Battier were healthy but then picking up an increasingly important role throughout the season after McGrady was unable to come back from his knee problems.
The Rockets had traded last season’s first round pick, Donte’ Greene, and this season’s first-round selection to get Artest.

I'm not an over-the-top Eminem fan, but it tends to happen either with success and/or complacency.
For example, Common used to be raw lyrically and less predictable....now he's a softer, wacker version of what he was 1995 and up because he's more marketable now and thus more successful.
I rhyme and vowed the same would never happen to me regardless of the circumstances, but their are many artists who peak and then fall off to either try and conform for one last shot at stardom or simply to keep up with the trends....or those that experience success and lose the hunger.
DUNCANownsKOBE2
07-02-2009, 12:04 AM
They conform because that's where the money's at. Plain and simple. They are selling out. I can't imagine Eminem would rather sing "Crack a Bottle" than "Under the Influence", it's easy to tell because of the emotion in his early CD's he doesn't have in his current music.
Either way, Eminem is still a musical genius when it comes to lyrics...but yeah, it's been couple years and I still listen to Em's old hits regularly.
And I hope ronron stays for the year in houston. Love his post-game interviews.

I've been listening to hip-hop a long long time and they all sell out. Except for maybe Chuck D, KRS-1, De La, and Aceleyone. Of course Chuck D, KRS-1, and De La can live on past accomplishments, while Aceleyone never really got paid. Anything Common did after Resurrection except for that joint he did with De La and a couple others pretty much suck.

The turning point in my book was that Usher song "yeah", Usher was a joke up until that point and singing a song about hanging out in the club and doing nothing made him famous. Since then hip hop is mostly songs about events that occur in a club.

Naw..Usher wasn't a joke..he just wasn't (and still isn't) hip hop. He's R&B. He had some good shit before that. You got it Bad, You Remind Me...tracks like that...for some reason, he decided to put that track out, and people thought that was hip hop now...bullshit.

IMO all those songs were shit :lol.....I don't listen to music to listen to people vent their emotions about love, women do that enough already.

AAAAAAAAAMEN.....especially that last sentence. Resurrection is my favorite album to date across any genre. The Hireoglyphics have stayed true as well, but mostly all artists fall into the death trap at some point and time. First I find out you're a 'Hawks fan now this nugget of Hip hop info P&G....ditch the Lakers and we'll practically be brothers separated at birth. :lol

There's some good shit in there, but I agree most stuff after the mid 90's is trash.
Again :tu. The gateway to any type of mainstream exposure for artists that couldn't be pigeon-holed began to swiftly close shortly after the mid '90s.

lol...it's all good. Being a label dude, it's in me to like pretty much all music, and as far as R&B love type songs go, Usher was the shit.

I can agree with that there's still some good shit out there and stuff that still comes out but not like before when there was fat shit coming out all the time. Hip-hop just got to big and everybody wanted a piece. But people will always be rhyming over beats so it will never die.

My favorite album is easily Marshall Mathers LP. That album had such an influence it's not even funny. When me, along with every other Jew I know that lives in North Central Phoenix started listening to rap because of that CD, it just shows how much of an influence it had.

As long as there are people in different corners of the world breaking, graphing, scratching, and rhyming Hip Hop the artform/culture will never die. The Hip hop INDUSTRY is what it is: a cashcow that goes with the hottest trend. Agent: Artest mulling options in free agency (http://www.mysanantonio.com/sports/spurs/Agent_Artest_mulling_options_in_free_agency.html)
By Chris Duncan
If LeBron James or Kobe Bryant are looking for a little help, Ron Artest is taking calls.
The Rockets star forward, an unrestricted free agent, will consider a team’s chances of winning an NBA championship when deciding where he’ll bring his skills next season, his agent says.
David Bauman said Wednesday that his client would like to return to Houston, but Artest would also think about signing with a contending team — and that might rule out the Rockets if Yao Ming’s broken left foot keeps him out for the season.
Bauman wouldn’t say which teams have contacted him about Artest. But he said he would expect Artest to talk to James and Bryant if the Cavaliers or Los Angeles Lakers were interested in him.
“All the superstars are very savvy and great recruiters,” Bauman said. “The superstars are sometimes even better recruiters than the general managers or their staffs. Between Kobe and Ron or LeBron and Ron, there are always conversations that occur. I think I’ll just leave it at that at this point.”
The Plain Dealer of Cleveland, citing anonymous sources, reported Wednesday that James and Artest met Tuesday in Los Angeles. James, the league MVP, was in Los Angeles on Sunday for the BET awards. Bauman declined to comment on the report.
Artest earned more than $7 million last season. Houston general manager Daryl Morey said he has contacted Bauman, but Artest’s agent would not comment on the progress.
Houston television station KRIV, citing unidentified sources, reported the Rockets would only be willing to offer Artest a one-year deal.
Cleveland would be an intriguing option, where Artest could round out a formidable trio with LeBron James and Shaquille O’Neal.
Another enticing possibility is the Lakers. The NBA champs may lose free-agent swingman Trevor Ariza.
All of this could deepen the misery for the Rockets, who already expect to be missing Tracy McGrady for the first half of next season as he tries to come back from microfracture surgery on his left knee. The team is waiting for more medical opinions on Yao’s fractured left foot, which a team doctor said this week could threaten his career.
The Rockets also are looking to sign Orlando Magic center Marcin Gortat.
Morey launched an all-out bid Wednesday to land Gortat, best known as the backup to Magic superstar Dwight Howard. The Dallas Mavericks are interested, too, and maybe there are others.
But Morey made the hard pitch, showing up at Gortat’s home in Orlando just after midnight at virtually the exact minute teams were officially allowed to begin negotiating with free agents.
Morey said the Rockets made Gortat an offer but would not divulge details.
The 6-foot-11 Gortat averaged just 3.8 points and 4.5 rebounds a game last season.

Yeah Resurrection is probably my favorite Hip-Hop album out there. It's between that one and Low End Theory. Every song in Resurrection has truth and his rhyming and flow was top notch. Not to mention the sick ass beats. Classic album no song has to be skipped. I used to listen to that shit all the time.
But yeah it sucks where artists sell out, but I guess they gotta get paid. Just like sports. It's still a business. As for the Lakeshow next year should be more exciting. The addition of Jefferson was a really nice move for your team and if they can pick up a legit big man to pair next to Duncan then they will be tough to beat. Of course I'll be rooting against it, cause I'd hate to see Tim get some actual help down there. That's pretty much the only thing between the Lakers and the Finals again.
And yeah the Seahawks made some nice moves I can't wait till it starts. If Hasselbeck can stay healthy I see us going deep in the playoffs. Getting Denver's pick next year was also genius. I've always hated the Broncos so this is even sweeter. That could end up being a very high pick. And the Cardinals will fall to earth again. Seahawks should take the West no problem. :toast

Hip-Hop in other countries is like it was 20 years ago here. There's some fat shit out there. They live and breathe it like they used to do here. They doing the whole 4 Pillars of Hip-hop. So it'll come back here, the influence is way too big.

There is good hip hop still here. Just people here are too stupid to realize what good hip hop is. First, they are more interested in the whole "street", "hood", or "money, hoes and dro" image bullshit. Second, they don't take time to actually listen to some of the things or the hidden messages that the truly good rappers have to say (Lupe, Jay, Talib, Mos Def, etc...)
I still think its hilarious how much Lupe gets overlooked. The man is possibly the best lyracist that music has ever seen. But people are too ignorant to look deeper, but rather see "skateboarding" and the fact that he didn't grow up selling drugs, or in some shitty neighborhood, and suddenly think that he isn't "real", which is the stupidest shit ever. But to each their own opinion.
