SEATTLE -- Former NBA star Shawn Kemp was arrested early Monday after officers stopped a pickup truck he was in and found what appeared to be marijuana and cocaine, authorities said.

Kemp was being held for investigation of drug possession and is due in court Tuesday, King County Jail spokesman Troy Bacon said. Kemp has not been charged with any crime.

The county sheriff's office said the arrest happened in suburban Shoreline after an officer smelled marijuana while talking to two men in a pickup. The officer found what appeared to be a small amount of cocaine, about 60 grams of marijuana and a semiautomatic pistol, the sheriff's office added.

Kemp, a five-time All-Star, was drafted by Seattle in 1989 and played for the SuperSonics until 1997 when he was traded to Cleveland in a deal that brought Vin Baker to Seattle from Milwaukee. The power forward also played for Portland and Orlando before ending his career in 2003.

He led the Sonics with 23.3 points and 10 rebounds a game in the 1996 NBA Finals, when Seattle lost to the Chicago Bulls in six games.

It's really too bad that Kemp has allowed himself to come to this. There was a point in time where he was a great athlete who was engaging with fans and the media and somewhat easy to root for. As the years have passed, his many, many flaws have been exposed and I'm sure his life is much more difficult than it could have been. His choices, to be sure, and he's acted like an idiot, so I don't feel sorry for him at all, but it's always kind of sad to see this sort of result.

Somehow Kemp managed to father twelve children from thirteen different mothers, at last count.

Wasn't one of Kemp's illegitimate kids on the cover of ESPN Magazine with the caption, "Where's My Daddy?" ?

Go easy...he was prolly just trying to earn the money to feed the family. Word is the Man-Child planned to hit Spree up for a loan, but heard he's running short of cash this season.

Amare is probably his equal on offense (in comparison to prime 93-96 Kemp) already, but Shawn was the better defender.

If I had kids in every NBA Town? I would also carry a gun,

and I would also be smoking weed since the NBA was stupid enough to write me more than one check for over one million dollars...

What would you do?

I think he was "making a funny". That was always the running joke with The Good Year Kemp.

Shawn is a sad, sad character. He kind of reminds me of the Chris Rock character in New Jack city. He just never seems to be able to give up the shit. He'll probably be dead before he's 45.

Come on guys, at least one of those had to be a threeway!

How many dead hookers did they find? I bet you can get a lot of dead hookers in the back of a pickup!

Sad, for at least one game in the NBA finals - most dominate player on floor at times, even playing against Jordan and Pippen and along side Payton. How much his game looked like Amare but even stronger and more athletic.

Sad.

That guy was an absolute stud the first few years in Seattle and his first year in Cleveland.

Ever since the 99 lockout where he got fat, its been downhill.

Absolutely horrible.

Its sad when someone with HIS talent just blows it.

RTD, I remember watching Kemp with the SOnics, and IMO, he was BETTER than Stoudamire, he had a damn good jump shot, and him and Payton together was a hell of a combo with Ricky Pierce, Nate McMillan, Vincent Askew (a real winner there) and the other Sonics.

Kemp was great. Much better defensively than Amare and a more well rounded offensive game, despite not putting up Amare numbers on offense. Truly one of the best power dunkers ever, too.

A shame, like Baseline said, how can someone wanna do that when they could of had everything they wanted.

Dude has an IQ of like 75. Forrest Gump was just a movie. This is the reality of how stupid people turn out even when everything is handed to them. They're too stupid to know how good they've got it.
