I take back what I said in my post above; I'm thinking of doing the hike to Havasu Falls.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/69/Havasu_Falls_2_md.jpg

It's on the Havasupai Indian reservation, and it's a 10 mile trip from the highway to it. They charge like $35 to enter the reservation, and I think you can rent mules from them if you don't want to do the hike. Oh yeah, you can also take a helicopter in.

The North Rim is less crowded (and cooler due to altitude).

Bring sunscreen and don't walk behind the Mule.

I was surprised to see in the city of Grand Canyon itself the high today was 79 and tomorrow like 82 or 83 and in the 50's at night. Im sure its much hotter on the floor. Is there really any reason to go to the floor?

We took a tour bus to the Grand Canyon and it sucked. It took 14 hours on a bus and we were the only Americans on the bus. The stop for lunch outside the canyon, the food sucked and the bus broke down and it snowed so hard we could only see 50 yards out at the canyon with no refund from the tour company. Rent a car and go on your own--do not take the bus! Get a map and stop where you want to. If you want to rent a Donkey ride to the bottom, it's booked up for at least a year a head of time. If you are going just to Vegas for a couple of days. STAY IN VEGAS and have fun!

The plane tours out of Las Vegas are not worth it (I guess it's better than nothing if you're on a once in a lifetime 3 days trip to Vegas). The helicopter tour from grand canyon airport (south rim) on the other hand are great.
If you can afford it take the longer one and with the eco star chopper (smoother ride and better view because of windows/seat configuration).
Go to the south rim (and around) with your own transportation since there's stuff you enjoy, that other don't and vice versa.

If you go across Hoover dam, stop and look down at it. The person I was with had seen it before and assumed I had too, and I didn't realize how cool it was until I saw pictures of it from the air.

Also, take a snack and something to read; it's a long assed boring drive out there and a hike in altitude to get to the edge, so you might want something to drink.

I've hiked the Bright Angel Trail to Plateau Point (12 miles round trip). The last three miles are strenuous as you are climbing back up 3000 ft. elevation. This will take the whole day. Bring water and snacks.

Try to catch sunrises and sunsets there. They can be spectacular.

Nice. I haven't finalized the dates I'll be there yet, but I think I'll do that trail down to the Colorado and back if I can get a reservation for a campground for a night. No way would I try to do that whole hike down to the river, up to the bridge, back to the river, and then back to the top in one day though since the trip back up has 5k in gain over 8 miles in 105 degree heat (at the bottom). Thanks. I didn't know about that trail and it looks pretty cool. It looks way more interesting than the Havasu Falls trail I was planning on doing instead (I'll only be there a couple of days).

And of course you get there and realize you are wrong :lol:tu

The first day we got there we did not enter the park until the evening. However it was a full moon so you could see quite a bit and tell how fucking wide and far down this bitch was. The pics definitely don't do it justice. I am still in awe of this place. Everyone who is able to has to see this place once in their life.

I would consider going back to do some hiking or rafting but you must really be prepared for that.

Will post pics once I find a place to upload them. Also took some vids on both my Iphone and sony camcorder.

While it's true that when I'm in Vegas it's all about the gambling and the hookers, I'd imagine that living there you'd have to run out of money at some point. Then, what's left to do but drive out to the desert and stare at that big hole in the ground.
