A lot of us (including me) are disappointed that the Spurs didn't sign Sheed. And for some reason the media doesn't seem to have a word on McDyees and what's going on with him.
While, I would still like a veteran big at the MLE, it will be interesing to see which young big develops. It looks like we're getting the right type: athletic and hungry.
Blair: Dominant, chip on his shoulder.
Gist: Athletic as can be.
Ian: Same as Gist.
Haislip: Well, he's not too young, but he's under 30 and really hungry to get in the NBA. He's got tools galore and a good offense. If he sits down and rebounds and plays D he might be a great find. He's at a good age because he knows this might be his last chance to make the NBA and have a career.
If we were to add Big Baby, welll he might not be hungry (insert weight joke here) but he's got a lot of talent. And he's really young too (but playoff experienced.)
Several of these guys will fail, but if simply one of these guys blossoms into a real starter and another into a rotation player, we'll be getting younger and more athletic fast. While I think the Spurs did/do want the experienced veteran, I think at the same time they're stockpiling young bigs hoping one of them steps up and can play.
And, if we do end up with Big Baby. He and Blair will be some WIDE bodies to test each other and the others in practice. Beware sonic booms when they collide.
Who will step up? I don't know. But it's not as bad a plan as many are saying.
