Drag Me to Hell sucked bad in my opinion. They don't make good horror films anymore. They are hard to find. Horror films started going down the toilet when "Scream" and the "I Know What you Did last Summer" movies started coming out.

I love movies like Poltergeist, Pet Semetary, the original "A Nightmare on Elm Street", Demons 2, Fright Night, Silver Bullet and The Lost Boys.

They don't make em like that anymore. Now you have vampire movies and horror wannabe movies where the soundtrack is filled with alot of noise and stupid rock music trying to be hip and cool, horrible dialogue.

Trash, trash, trash...

Nosferatu and The Shining are the best I've seen. But for comedic-horror I like The Lost Boys, Fright Night, and Shadow of the Vampire.

Some have already been mentioned, but you gotta go with the classics.

Poltergeist
The Shining
Pet Cemetery
Seven
It
Alien
Event Horizon

Horror series with kitsch value:
Friday the 13th
Nightmare on Elm Street
Halloween
Chucky
Saw

The only newish horror movie I really enjoyed was 1408, but I haven't seen one in a long while.

I also have to add to my previous post that I loved "An American Werewolf in London"...

Remember when it was scary to watch a scene where the man transformed into the wolf, him screaming from his hands growing and face disfiguring, the little hairs growing out of his skin? That was scary, That was entertaining.

Now we get cartoon-looking werewolfs running all over the screen and people are impressed with this crap? Trash! :pctoss

agreed. these movies have really watered down american horror films.

i think there are a few directors who are kinda reverting back to the older and better days - like eli roth and rob zombie. i think the saw and hostel series are both better than the i know what you did last summer level garbage.

also liked grindhouse and the fake previews between were brilliant. i wish they'd go ahead and make "Thanksgiving". and where's Machete? i thought that was set for release about the time grindhouse hit dvd...

also masters of horror on showtime was a nice breath of fresh air. the premise was to give famous horror directors two weeks to film a one hour show. some were good, some sucked. had a nice tales from the crypt feel to it though, that good ol tongue-in-cheek horror.

The first Saw was good; it was new and inventive. Then they turned it into another mass produced piece of shit just so it could release every year on Halloween.

Hostel is just gore-porn. Its not scary to see some chick bleed someone dry and bathe in the blood. I'm not saying some gore is bad, but having gore for the sake of gore doesn't make something scary.

And Zombie fucking butchered Halloween. Butchered.

1000 corpses was a rip off of Texas Chainsaw Massacre, but I actually Devil's Rejects was pretty decent. I do like his style, its gritty but he needs the right story.

They haven't made any horror movies this decade. Gorenography? Yes. Horror? No.

I don't know if it counts as horror, but it was always in the horror section of my local VHS rental store ala 1995; Silence of the Lambs.

Anyone who's read the book The Shining, not only doesn't like the movie, they think it's absolute rubbish. And in general, probably harbor feelings of ill-will unto Stanley Kubrick for destroying it.

yeah, really dug the first saw the most. didn't bother to see the last one, but i'll catch it when it comes out on hbo or showtime. i'm just at a point with modern horror movies where it's stuff like saw or nothing. nothing to drool over, but good for a few cheap torture scenes and twisted ideas!

i liked the plot of hostel. unique concept overall with a solid revenge aspect to clinch the ending. and i can't get enough gore personally. ; ) you're right though on the scare factor. doesn't resonate that way.

i actually liked halloween, mainly for my reasons above in wanting something gritty. it's admittedly my least favorite of zombie's movies, but i thought it was a better addition to the series than H20 and the last few pieces of crap. i wasn't as bothered as most people were by seeing myers's prototypical broken-home background - didn't ruin the mystique of the story for me for some reason...

all about zombie's characters though. there are some hilarious scenes in devil's rejects. the first time i watched it i found it a little unnerving, but i've since grown to see the underlying humor. looking forward to tyrannosaurus rex.

Alright i don't know about favorite cuz movies just don't scare me anymore. I want them to, but the last I can remember that really kept me up at night was EVENT HORIZON-really disturbing movie. But i watched it again recently and wasn't as freaky, i think it's about age. between 10-17 i got scared of a whole lot more stuff than i can now. Otherwise just good horror movies i'd say the shining, nightmare on elm street 1, Saw 1, and hmm, sad ive been thinking for like 10 minutes can't come up with anymore. Horror movies are in a sad state

It is, but it's one of those movies that's only good now because it's the movie that set the bar for other, greater films. I watched Nightmare again last fall for the first time in years and was bored out of my skull. I remember seeing that movie when I was like five and being afraid of Freddy for the looongest fucking time.

The DESCENT.

Scariest movie in some time

http://z.about.com/d/movies/1/0/Z/U/D/thedescentposter.jpg

Agreed. The Descent is one of the more overlooked and scarier movies in the past few years, if not the scariest.

Hostel was pretty good. I thought it did a really good job of giving you a sense of hopelessness for the characters. Hostel 2 was pretty bad though. Especially the goth bitch bathing in blood scene. I wasn't scared or terrified, I just thought it was fucking weird.

Event Horizon scared the shit out of me when I was younger. Not so much anymore but it still has some pretty disturbing moments.

Although it wasn't very popular, I thought the first Texas Chainsaw remake was pretty well done and had me cringing at moments. The second remake was pretty terrible.

Other than that I can't really think of any horror movies that have come out in the past few years that are actually scary. Most of them give you the same ol' sex, gore and death but fail to provide any real thrills. Which is fine actually, that's usually all I expect going into horror movies anymore. If they can come up with a few creative ways to kill off some poor souls than I'm usually satisfied.

It the clown continues to haunt my dreams on a rare occassion. There's nothing more frightening I've ever read or heard about than a creature that not only assumes your worst fears, but can't be detected by without said fears. AND he lives in the sewer. Nothing like listening for gurgling sounds in the drain and drawing the shower curtain open before you can use the toilet.

I like The Exorcist, from 1973. I thought the "unrated" version (with deleted scenes) was actually worse. The added scenes did nothing for the movie, in fact made it worse.

I'm not much for horror movies. In fact, I don't think I've ever seen Nightmare on ES, or Friday the 13th.

"The last house on the left" the original from 1972 though. That shit was hard to get a hold of until just very recently.

The film had problems with censorship in many countries, and was particularly controversial in the United Kingdom. The film was refused a certificate for cinema release by the BBFC in 1974[3] due to scenes of sadism and violence. During the early 1980s home video boom, the film was released uncut (save for an incidental, gore-free scene with the comedy cops, and the end credit roll) as a video that did not fall under their remit at the time. This changed when the "video nasty" scare which started in 1982 led to the Video Recordings Act 1984. This in turn banned the film as one of the Department of Public Prosecutions list of "video nasties".

The film remained banned throughout the remainder of the 1980s and into the 1990s. However it had built a cult reputation in the UK, plus critics such as Mark Kermode began to laud the film as an important piece of work. In 2000, the film was again presented to the BBFC for certification and it was again refused[4], though it was granted a license for a one-off showing in Leicester in June 2000, after which the BBFC again declared that the film would not receive any form of certification.

In June 2002 the BBFC won against an appeal made to the Video Appeals Committee by video distributor Blue Underground Limited. The BBFC had required 16 seconds of cuts to scenes of sexual violence before the video could be given an ‘18’ certificate. Blue Underground Limited refused to make the cuts, and the BBFC therefore rejected the video. The distributor then appealed to the VAC, who upheld the BBFC's decision.[5] During the appeal, film critic Mark Kermode was called in as a horror expert to make a case for the film's historical importance. However, after his report, the committee not only upheld the cuts but doubled them[6].

The film was eventually given an 18 certificate with 31 seconds of cuts on July 17, 2002[7] and was released in the UK on DVD in May 2003. The cut scenes were viewable as a slideshow extra on the disc, and there was a weblink to a website where the cut scenes could be viewed.

The BBFC classified the film uncut for video release on March 17, 2008.

28 Days Later isnt a Horror. It is an amazing thriller/suspense though. Top 10 movie of decade

I definitely consider it a horror movie. You probably can't classify it as strictly a horror movie since it also overlaps with the suspense and thriller genres, but much like the descent, it's the overlapping genres and deeper themes that make the movie stand apart from you're typical slasher "Jason" or "Freddy" movie.
