Speights Shines, but Pacers Win Opener

ORLANDO -- It may not have been an NBA regular season game at the RDV Sportsplex practice facility in Orlando on Monday, but Marreese Speights demonstrated why he earned valuable minutes for the Philadelphia 76ers this past season.

The former University of Florida standout flourished in his return home to his native state with 28 points and 11 rebounds, but the Nets/Sixers couldn’t overcome the Indiana Pacers in a 75-67 overtime defeat in the first game of the 2009 Orlando Pro Summer League.

"I feel really good about myself," Speights said.

Speights, nonetheless, wasn’t the only rising player to prosper. New Jersey’s Chris Douglas-Roberts, who is expected to compete with newcomer Courtney Lee and rookie Terrence Williams for the starting shooting guard role in 2009-10, contributed 20 points.

Notable 2009 NBA Draft first-round selections, Tyler Hansbrough and Jrue Holiday, each showed promise in their professional debuts for their respective teams.

Despite committing four fouls in the first half, Hansbrough, the all-time scoring leader in the ACC, posted a team-high 17 points for Indiana. Holiday, meanwhile, who played just one season at UCLA, collected nine points and two assists for NJ/Philadelphia.

Other noteworthy performers from the opener included Brandon Rush, who won a national championship in his final year at Kansas. The Pacers' 6’6 guard recorded 15 points.

His teammate Roy Hibbert muscled in 12 points and UConn product A.J. Price had eight.

The Nets/Sixers squad will clash with the Utah Jazz on Tuesday at 5 p.m. ET, while the Pacers and Oklahoma City Thunder will meet at 7 p.m.

Not sure what's sadder...that they mixed the two teams together, or that together, they lost to the Pacers.

A fan mailed in to the guys calling the match, and asked them to call the Nets/Sixers, The Cheapskates. :lol

that is crazy because the two teams to merge are the large market teams and the team functioning on its own was Indiana.

They do that for a while. When TD was a rookie I think the Spurs played with the 76ers team too

Do the Pacers organization own Conseco Fieldhouse?
If so, they might have the same financial stability afforded the Pistons...

True. As recently as the summer of 1999 when the Spurs shared a team with the Sixers and AD was the star of the team.
