N.Y. congressman blasts Jackson as ‘pervert’
Rep. Peter King says coverage of singer’s death is ‘too politically correct’

NEW YORK - A New York congressman who is considering a Senate run posted a YouTube video calling Michael Jackson a “pervert” and questioning the exhaustive media coverage of the pop star’s death.

Rep. Peter King, a Long Island Republican, said in the video posted Sunday that society is glorifying a “low-life” while hardworking teachers, police officers, firefighters and veterans don’t get the credit they deserve.

“This guy was a pervert,” King said in the video, shot Sunday by a staff member outside an American Legion hall. “He was a child molester. He was a pedophile. And to be giving this much coverage to him, day in and day out, what does it say about us as a country?”

A jury acquitted Jackson in 2005 of charges that he molested a 13-year-old cancer survivor.

But in a telephone interview Monday, King said that Jackson had “admitted to sleeping with young boys, traveling with young boys. ... That’s the definition of pedophilia.”

In a 2003 documentary, Jackson admitted to letting children sleep with him in his bed at his California home but said it wasn’t sexual.

The congressman called the coverage of Jackson’s death too politically correct.

He said Jackson may have been a good singer and dancer but added: “The bottom line is, would you let your child or grandchild be in the same room with Michael Jackson?”

Ken Sunshine, a spokesman for Jackson’s family, declined to respond to King’s criticism. “We will not dignify this or any other statement with a comment,” he said.

Coverage of the 50-year-old superstar’s death and related matters such as the custody of his three children has dominated headlines and airwaves since Jackson died June 25.

King said he decided to post his video critique after speaking with constituents over the Fourth of July weekend.

“A number of them were mentioning to me, ‘When’s this stuff with Michael Jackson going to end?”’ King said. “It’s just too much.”

King is considering seeking the GOP nomination for the U.S. Senate seat held by Democratic Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, which is up in 2010.

He said he has posted other Internet videos on issues such as cap-and-trade legislation to control pollution, but those videos did not receive as much attention as the Michael Jackson comments have.

Whether he was guilty or not of being a pedophile, I still think the media is blowing this out of proportion, there is still waty too much coverage.
Channels like E! are another story, but CNN, Fox, MSNBC, etc. should be reporting on politics and other news. On top of that you are hardly hearing a word about Farrah, or Ed McMahon.

Exactly. Besides, In case any of you forgot, this is America. Had there been any proof of mike molesting some little white boy(Let's not forget about the latino kid the second time around.) they would have thrown him under the jail no matter how much money he had. Have any of you passing judgement ever thought that the people accusing him of this were just dishonest, and saw an easy target? The people that accused him were grifters who had already tried to extort money from other celebrities, but some of you stupid motherfuckers find them to be trustworthy? If you practice a little common sense, and look at the actual facts, you may realize he was innocent.

You're right, it wasn't normal. It was extraordinary in a great way. He had a bigger heart than most people. People want to see it as weird because they can't understand such love from a human being. The words in his music were all about love and changing the world, it always stayed on point for all these years no matter what.

I actually did anticipate this much coverage. With the amount the Hilton sisters, the Spears family, and the Kennedys get, I expected nothing less than full media storm. MJ was a tier 1 celebrity. Not only did his career have longevity, but he was also a media 'freak' at the same time. He is an Elvis. He died young, and therefore death became him.

Doesn't mean I like it 1 bit. I switch the channel most of the time when they bring him up as a topic, and the gushing still sickens me, regardless of his innocence or guilt.

I don't care about celebrities lives. I have no interest in meeting any celebrity. I don't understand why other people care about these people. They entertain. Thank you. Here is my money. Go away.

The only time I gave a 2nd thought when I heard of a celebrity death was when I found out Mitch Headberg was dead. And then I was pissed that he 'offed' himself because he deprived me of future comedy he would have inevitable produced.

The senator has a point. There is a lot of evidence this guy was trouble. You have to balance the good with the bad if you are going to plaster this stuff everywhere anyways...

I'm not going to defend the over-coverage because I'm sick of it, too, but they're only giving the people what they want.

We knew that Michael Jackson’s memorial service would be one of the biggest events in Internet history, and so far, the numbers are confirming it. We’ve learned that CNN.com’s live stream of the event drew at least 9.7 million views (through 5pm ET), with a maximum of 781,000 concurrent viewers.

While that falls short of the 27 million total and 1.3 million concurrent live streams that President Obama’s inauguration saw on CNN.com, it would appear that users were more engaged in the company’s Facebook Connect integration for Jackson, with upwards of 6,000 status updates being posted per minute earlier today. CNN also reports that their website has received 11.8 million unique visitors and 81 million page views so far today.

Elsewhere around the Web, Twitter (Twitter) is seeing massive volume of Jackson-related tweets. In addition to occupying all 10 of Twitter’s trending topics, we now know that the term “Michael Jackson” alone was generating 80,000 tweets per hour. Taking into account all of the other associated terms being used, the event likely rivals some of the most discussed events we’ve ever seen on Twitter, with the most recent example being the #iranelection.

http://mashable.com/2009/07/07/cnn-live-stream-michael-jackson/

One way to get an idea of how many page views (81M) that is for CNN.com (they reported these numbers were through 5 p.m., EDT), KSAT.com had about 70M page views last year.

Ehhhh....baracks choice of a dog wasnt the main story every hour for the full hour. MSN didn't devote their whole page to the stupid dog, neither did CNN provide full coverage all the time. And the local news sure as hell didn't cover it as the main story every fucking night. maye they mentioned it, but it was like an aside, at the end of the newscast.
