HOUSTON - The Houston Rockets used the NBA Disabled Player Exception to sign free agent forward Trevor Ariza (http://spurstalk.com/forums/#), according to general manager Daryl Morey.
The NBA granted the Disabled Player Exception based on the fact that Yao Ming (http://spurstalk.com/forums/#) is not expected to play next season because of his broken left foot.
"As a course of business to give us maximum flexibility, we applied for an injury exception for Yao and it was granted by the league," Morey said in an interview with FOX 26 Sports on Wednesday.
"That will allow us to use the Mid-Level Exception to improve the Rockets roster going forward."By granting the Disabled Player Exception, the NBA is agreeing with the Rockets that it is unlikely that Yao will play during the 2009-2010 season. However, it does not rule out Yao's return. Also, in the unlikely event that Yao does play next season, the Rockets would not be penalized.
The value of the NBA Disabled Player Exception is identical to the Mid-Level Exception. They both begin at approximately $5.8 million per year.
The Rockets chose to use the Disabled Player Exception on Ariza because the NBA only allows it to be used on one player. The Mid-Level Exception can be broken up and used on one or more players.
While Yao is not expected to play next season, he has yet to determine how he will treat his injury going forward.
"I am still considering what course of action is best," Yao said in a statement to FOX 26 Sports issued through his agent John Huizinga.
"Once a decision has been made, I will let people know and I will proceed with the same high level of optimism and dedication that I have had in the past. I look forward to returning to play as soon as my recovery allows."

Cool move by the Rockets. Still having the MLE, they can still pick up a decent big man. That would be interesting if they picked up Allen Iverson :lol
As for the Lakers, without getting back the MLE in a Sign&Trade, the most they can hope for is a vet minimum player (if they let Odom walk). Seems to me the Lakers will re-sign Lamar at any cost now.

Houston tried the S&T first. LA is the ones who wouldn't agree. No doubt they'd rather S&T Ariza and still have the MLE and Injury Exception to play with/

4) Disabled Player Exception. A team may replace a player who suffers a season-ending injury with one player making up to 50% of the injured player’s current salary, up to a maximum of the average player salary. The Disabled Player Exception is available in the following circumstances:
(a) If the player is injured between July 1 and November 30 and is determined to be out for that season, the team has 45 days to use the Exception; or
(b) If the player is injured between December 1 and June 30 and is determined to be out for the subsequent season, the team has until the following October 1 to use the Exception.

I'd offer up McGrady, Battier and Landry for Stoudamire + Jrich or Barbosa.

Surely J-Rich will be agglutinated with Amare, so Barbosa isn't gonna come to Houston anyways. With the 7'6 huge piece of **** out for next season, Rockets will have no big guy to work as the axis in their lento half-court offense. Run-gun seems to be the only way for Rockets to keep themselves looking like a contender next season.
The one good thing about the 2009-2010 season is that the Rockets are very used to playing without Yao. There will be little to no chemistry problem...Trevor Ariza seems like a player who will fit in with Adelman's offense.

According to Mitch, David Lee was playing hardball and wanted too much...and had to move in for Artest fast when negotiations for Ariza were going nowhere.
Would you prefer an 8.9 ppg and 4.6 rebound over Artest for the same price?
mystargtr34
07-09-2009, 05:18 PM
You cant judge by statistics when two players had different roles on different teams. if you think Artest will average 15 PPG, then for a 40% career FG guy, that will take him about 14 shots when you count in FT and maybe a made 3PTer or two. Who does he take those shots from? Pau Gasol? Kobe Bryant? Odom?
Its all about filling a role, and im not sure whether Artest can do that.

The Rockets have played often and well enough without Yao to be able make the transition to a faster paced team. They could pull out an eighth seed, or so, I would imagine. They have some young talent and cap flexibility coming up and Morey and Alexander are smart and committed to building a championship team. As disappointed as I am as a Rockets fan to see the Yao-McGrady duo not pan out, I am almost relieved that the team is forced to look beyond this era. Waiting for the other shoe (cast) to drop on the injury front is horrible for a fan base.
