Coveted free agent Antonio McDyess(notes) has decided to sign with the San Antonio Spurs, a league source told Yahoo! Sports on Wednesday afternoon.

McDyess, 34, will sign a two-year deal at the mid-level exception for $11.7 million. It is believed there is a partial guarantee on a third season.

McDyess’ decision had come down to the Spurs, Detroit Pistons and Cleveland Cavaliers

Bring on the Boston Celtics next June. Time for us to do the job that the LA Fakers could NOT do. What a great off-season. 2nd best in the Tim Duncan era...the best being 2000 when we kept Tim from signing with Orlando. Pop give all our new, young studs plenty of playing time in the regular season and rest guys like Tim & Manu, and bring them strong into the mix after the All Star break.

Let's get ready for the 2009-2010 NBA Finals!!!

If it's the case, it isn't even a full MLE contract. It's likely a contract with a flat structure. ($5.854M for each year)

Antonio McDyess accepts Spurs' offer (http://www.mysanantonio.com/sports/spurs/McDyess_accepts_Spurs_offer.html)
Mike Monroe - Express-News

The Spurs on Wednesday landed free agent power forward-center Antonio McDyess, a 6-foot-9 Olympic gold medal winner and veteran of 14 seasons who remains one of the NBA’s premier post players.

Spurs general manager R.C Buford confirmed the agreement.

Sources close to McDyess said he will sign a three-year contract with the Spurs, starting at the full, mid-level exception to the NBA’s salary cap restrictions, $5.845 million.

The third season is believed to be partially guaranteed. McDyess has expressed his desire to play only two more seasons.

McDyess averaged 9.6 points and 9.8 rebounds as the starting center for the Detroit Pistons last season. Though he will turn 35 on Sept. 7, he has played in 109 fewer games, regular season and playoffs, than has 34-year-old Spurs captain Tim Duncan.

The Spurs also reached agreement Wednesday with free agent power forward Marcus Haislip, the 13th selection, by the Milwaukee Bucks, in the 2002 NBA draft. Haislip, also 6-9, has played in Turkey and Spain since leaving the NBA in 2005. He played last season for Unicaja Malaga, of the Spanish League, averaging 16.5 points and 5.2 rebounds.

McDyess chose the Spurs over the Pistons, who could not match the money the Spurs offered. The Orlando Magic, who played in the NBA Finals in June, also are believed to have offered full mid-level money.

The second pick in the 1995 draft by the Clippers, McDyess went to the Denver Nuggets in a draft-night deal. He also has played for the Suns and Knicks, but enjoyed his most successful run with the Pistons, an Eastern power who reached the Eastern Conference Finals four times in his five seasons there.

McDyess has career averages of 13.2 points and 7.8 rebounds. He also has played in 84 playoff games, including the seven games of the 2005 NBA Finals, when the Spurs defeated the Pistons. He was a key backup, behind Rasheed Wallace and Ben Wallace, on that team. He was one of the Pistons’ most productive playoff performers last season, averaging 13.0 points and 8.5 rebounds in a first-round series against Cleveland.

The Spurs now have four players – Duncan, Manu Ginobili, Tony Parker and McDyess – who have been All-Stars during their NBA careers.

Fiercely loyal, the decision to join the Spurs was difficult for McDyess. He had returned to the Pistons after Detroit general manager Joe Dumars traded him to the Nuggets in November, part of the blockbuster trade involving Chauncey Billups and Allen Iverson.

Since he was in the final season of his contract with the Pistons, the Nuggets negotiated a buyout of the $6.8 million he was owed, and then waived him. The Spurs were one of several teams that tried to sign him then, but after waiting an NBA-mandated 30 days, he re-signed with the Pistons, mostly out of loyalty to Dumars.

The Spurs had targeted both McDyess and his Pistons teammate, Rasheed Wallace, this summer. They turned their attention to McDyess after Wallace announced his intent to sign with the Celtics, which he did on Wednesday.

Though McDyess doesn’t have Wallace’s 3-point range, he is an outstanding mid-range shooter and a more consistent rebounder and defender.

McDyess considers winning a gold medal at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia, the highlight of his basketball career. Ironically, he was named to the 2000 U.S. team as a replacement for Tim Duncan, who withdrew from the team in mid-August, 2000, because of a knee injury.

Now, McDyess hopes to team with Duncan to achieve the only goal he deems greater than winning Olympic gold: An NBA title.

This is what I want to happen, but it depends on three things: Will the Spurs scrap the 2010 plan, open up their wallets and go into win now mode in order to maximize Tim's years here?

If they are willing to do all of those things here is what they need to do in my opinion:

1) Really Target Team Needs: What does this team need? A true center that can help Tim patrol the paint along with rebound at a high rate. More than ever it has become evident that Tim can no longer do it on his own. It will go along way to improving the Spurs defense along with giving Tim some rest on that end.

Go for athletic wings that can do this combonation: Defend with some size and speed, hit the 3 efficiently or score efficiently. I would say lean to the scoring. Not all the way, but do not think you can find the Bowen replacement today. If you can get someone who is a solid defender and a better scorer, than it will go a long way to improving the line up.

How do you do this?

1) Buy into the Buyers Market: If people are willing to part with elite talent in order to increase cap space and shed salary, then the Spurs need to buy now. Especially if it is a player that fits a situational and positional need.

This especially makes sense if the player is relatively young and would be just as good as who the Spurs could expect to get in 2010 with the anticipated cap space. The NBA has shown that this is a distinct possibility, and the Spurs need to be ready to pounce. Spurs have 3 guys in Oberto/Mason/Bowen whom they can trade (because they expire in 2010) that will allow for the Spurs to trade for someone who makes 15 million dollars. That can buy you a nice player.

This becomes double effective if you can do so without trading Ginobili. Obviously, out of the big 3, Manu is the most likely to be traded. If you can use some kind of combo of players like I mentioned to get talent, without giving up Gino it would be a major bonus.

3) Use all of the MLE if the Right Player Comes Along: The spurs need to look for forwards and centers. If the Spurs can fulfill one need by trading, they need to use the MLE to target the other needs.

Do not just waste money, but if you have an opportunity to sign someone for a bargain (meaning somewhat of a good player who cannot really command more than the full MLE a la Maggette) then they need to do it.

With the combination of trades and the MLE, the Spurs have some options if they are willing to open up the checkbook. Will they? Probably not to the degree that I outlined, but I hope they try and win now, and worry about the future down the road when we do not have Duncan to appreciate any more.

This is getting perfect. McDyess is a perfect piece to the puzzle. He is a crafty veteran who can help Timmy spread the floor with his mid range jumper. He does not pose an ego problem to the team (Sheed's attitude would not have been good for us) Also, I like the fact we get a hungry veteran (for a ring) who can help Timmy bring along two young, high energy bigs (Blair and Mahmni). Add that along with our great guards (Manu, Parker, Jefferson, and Hill who I think will have a break out year), we are in damn good shape for the year.

HoopsWorld was right!

McDyess to the Spurs
8 July 2009 No Comment
Antonio McDyess has agreed to sign with the San Antonio Spurs, according to HoopsWorld. It’s likely to be a three-year deal, which is pretty hefty for Dice’s condition, but good for him because I’m sure he was looking for someone who would sign him for at least two years. Guess this is Dice’s final push for a ring.

This could also open the door to signing the Mavs’ forward Brandon Bass.

It’s a shame we had to lose another veteran to another team that I absolutely hate. At this point, however, I really don’t blame him for leaving.

Who gives a damn about the luxury tax, it's not like us fans are paying it!??! Surely the Spurs franchise has squirrelled away a few acorns after all those years of strict cap management.
