At least it looks like he appreciated his time in SA, and the chance to play for the Spurs.

Can't really hate on Gooden. He produced his azz off while with the Spurs. His per-minute numbers were ridiculous. The attributes that didn't make him a good long-term fit in San Antonio -- namely a lack of basketball IQ -- were mostly things out of his control at this point of his NBA career.

Good luck, Goody :tu

It would have been nice to keep Gooden, but there's just no way you can say no to Dice when he's the exact player this team needed. If Dice had said no, Drew would have been my next choice though after Sheed and Zaza were off the market.

Thank you Gooden for at least giving us fans hope last year. You definitely did better in 2 months with the Spurs than Bonner did all last year. I wish you could stay but it doesnt seem possible at this point. Good luck to you wherever you may go. Just don't go to the Lakers, Celtics, Suns, Mavs, or Cavs.

Aside from all the bashing that most people give him on here, I am truly gonna miss Gooden. I thought he was a pretty solid pickup last season, and he provided what we all thought he would provide: offense and rebounding. We never expected him to be a great defender, and his bball IQ might not be that great, but he's a very solid player, and he's going to be able to land somewhere they can really use him.

I would be completely down to sign him for the LLE, if we weren't loaded in the frontcourt now. His offense alone off the bench could have been good for the Spurs. Wherever he ends up, I wish him well.

Call R.C. tomorrow and tell him you'll take the LLE and that you are one hell of a backup Point Guard. Or tell R.C. you should replace Bonner. That should seal the deal. :toast

I think it's unfair to say that.
The Spurs system is difficult to learn and Pop didn't play him much before the playoffs.
Maybe with a lot of practice with the team before the season he could have been a really good player for the Spurs...
But with Blair, Haislip, Mahinmi & Bonner, there's no room anymore for him in the team.

The LLE is gone.

No it's not. They signed Haislip for the vet minimum. The Spurs still have the LLE.

Haislip represents an intriguing gamble for the Spurs, and a cheap one at that. The team has signed him to a two-year deal at the veteran minimum. It will pay him $825,497 for the upcoming season.

Low IQ? Dude learned the set plays quickly. To me he's a pretty smart player, He knows how to position himself to get rebounds, knows how to set screens, and knows when to cut. Low IQ? I don't think so!

Gooden did what was asked of him without complaint or second guessing.

He came to the Spurs with high hopes and was never really given a chance to fulfill them. I can't think of too many players who could have handled a seemngly unfair situation any better. It would be fitting if the Spurs could retain him or at least help him to a better destination.

if he doesnt sign for the LLE he should play somewhere else. I wish him all the best and would like to see him back for the LLE, but 3mio? thats 6mio for Holt to pay....I know, I'm sounding like Ebenezer Scrooge himself, but Holt has done so much this offseason, we shouldnt blame him for not paying insane money for lesser players!

Orlando is one of the teams that are waaaaaaay over the luxury tax. I doubt they're going to take a direct hit by signing Gooden. No way they can afford him right now.

Thanks for setting me straight about the LLE. That is great news. I was hoping that he signed for the minimum. If we can get Gooden or Williams or Rasho, this would be a pretty much perfect offseason.

I liked Gooden a lot. He wasn't the smartest guy out there, but he always brought 110%. It'd be great if we could keep him somehow, can't think of any reason why we wouldnt' want his energy coming off the bench...

Congrats on 1K posts, Big P!

wildbill2u
07-10-2009, 10:21 AM
Gooden was a reliable scorer, but maybe that's because he never passed the ball out to his teammates and took all the shots while he was in the game. Still, as a bench player maybe that was his role.

He was suspect perhaps on the defensive end--but it's not easy picking up the Spurs system.

I wish him well.

Now I know that Gooden isn't a "space the floor" type of player that Pops loves and we used Bonner as last year but although we are accumulating bigs, several are unproven.

A couple of posters mentioned a team with cap room signing him and trading him to us for Bonner, a sack of basketballs and the team washing machine but is this situation below possible?

Spurs trade Bonner to a team with cap space in return for a trade exception. Spurs then use it to offer a contract to Gooden starting at Bonner's salary of 3.25 million.

It adds Gooden at a decent price he might accept without crowding the frontcourt further. Is there anything in the league rule that prevent this from happening?

Didn't see an appreciation thread for Drew, but as some fans posted earlier, he called our fan base the best in the NBA.

I must admit I was hopeful we can retain him, not because his defense sucks or because of his questionable IQ, but because he was a professional. Did whatever he was asked and didn't complain about playing time. And as TIMVP mentioned, how can you ignore his production, especially per 48 mins.

But I just wanted to thank Drew for choosing us, and for staying positive.

On another note, which team do you NOT want to see Drew on? I personally hope he doesn't go to Dallas.

According to Marc Stein, the Pistons have Rasho ahead of Gooden now. i still don't understand why Gooden's considered so poorly:

"It's believed that the Pistons, as of Thursday, have Rasho Nesterovic and Chris Wilcox ahead of Drew Gooden as their next free-agent targets, since it appears that they can't assemble an offer sheet rich enough for Glen Davis to keep the Boston Celtics from matching."

That's insane. Well, I guess since Detroit's Center is Kwame Brown, they probably would look at a guy like Rasho. Gooden is more of a PF. That's still a bit weird, though.

Gooden was a reliable scorer, but maybe that's because he never passed the ball out to his teammates and took all the shots while he was in the game.
I wish him well.

Thats true but Manu was mostly injured and Tim was playing on one leg while he was here so i think the Spurs needed someone to assume somewhat of an offensive role to give Tim and Tony some help. Last year our offense was basically Tim and Tony plus spot up shooters that couldn't create. If he was on the roster this year (which he most likely won't be) i'm sure he would buy into the Spurs system more considering the roster that we'll have.
