DALLAS (AP)—Brandon Bass (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/3959/;_ylt=AlZWLBN7vyNuRW4iE7i0tK.LvLYF)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/3959/news;_ylt=AuMhqVlWcvFAogISHH6qHMOLvLYF) is going from backing up Dirk Nowitzki (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/3252/;_ylt=Aqs4XnzeMbQCsmVoF7BLjhGLvLYF)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/3252/news;_ylt=Ah93YPB9WWTZ5DiR2GyKOoKLvLYF) to likely starting next to Dwight Howard (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/3818/;_ylt=AvSF8FiutP_ZdpfcKth4C2qLvLYF)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/3818/news;_ylt=AqXvVb8k0kb0bs_VbMR0OBuLvLYF).
Bass agreed Friday to sign with the Orlando Magic (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/teams/orl/;_ylt=AvJYPFBhwZTDkmz1gZ28vruLvLYF), according to a person with knowledge of the decision. The person was granted anonymity because the Magic had not made an announcement.
NBA.com, which first reported the signing, said it was a four-year deal for around $18 million, with an escape clause after three years.
The Mavericks were hoping to re-sign Bass, but ran out of money and playing time with the acquisition of Shawn Marion (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/3332/;_ylt=AhhHnxOQXYPvHKcfcBBjhLOLvLYF)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/3332/news;_ylt=An8iNf4lSkmNZlLs7X5bIVaLvLYF). Coincidentally, Dallas is expected to soon get restricted free agent center Marcin Gortat (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/3983/;_ylt=AvDGk1mSvbGPn.tBChxcfK2LvLYF)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/3983/news;_ylt=AlFmH4uU7mbWMApLVnSaEqKLvLYF) from Orlando; paperwork is going through on an offer sheet that the Magic are expected not to match.

In Orlando, Bass is expected to start at power forward, with Rashard Lewis (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/3275/;_ylt=AucV.RpFj0eJyuZh.e38psqLvLYF)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/3275/news;_ylt=AgEbTtACmztpInM3QDRL1_aLvLYF) and newcomer Vince Carter (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/3248/;_ylt=AnStx4txcmcxWkxIJr8p_7.LvLYF)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/3248/news;_ylt=Aikjm2DRddk6aTtrid.r6p.LvLYF) taking over the two wing spots, along with Howard at center and Jameer Nelson (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/3837/;_ylt=ApAlfxWJexldJys1KQKASUuLvLYF)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/3837/news;_ylt=AijDN35Z9uN6XOjyNSa1c1CLvLYF) at point guard.
Bass is only 23, but he’s been in the NBA for four years—two with the Hornets, the last two with the Mavericks. He averaged 8.5 points and 4.5 rebounds over 19.4 minutes per game last season, almost identical to his numbers the previous season.
At 6-foot-8, Bass is a bit undersized for a power forward, but he’s got a wide body and plenty of toughness. He also has a good mid-range jumper and he made 87 percent of his free throws last season

Why didn't the Spurs go after him!?!?!

First off: this really should be in the NBA forum

Second off: what money do you propose we should have signed him with?

Dice fits our needs so much more, post D, can hit jumper even better

Plus considering that Bass plays so well against Spurs-- we should be happy he essentially is swapped for Gortat b/c Mavs and Magic.

Man, I hope Blair's knees hold up!!

I've been waitin to see how Ian does in the Spurs rotation, I don't think Coach Pop trusts him!

I am a SPURS fan, I'm just discussin the topic!!

I think Bass is a very good player, his numbers in 08-09 were similar to Marions!

I think he coulda been our big man in the middle! The Spurs hav had matchup problems with him in the past, so I thought why not have him on our team!!
At least he went to the East!

Dice is just better in EVERY facet than Bass.

It's that simple.

bass is too short to play center and his rebounding, depsite his position, isnt that good. our biggest problem up front for a few years now was rebounding and defense and mcydess is better than him in both.

I think hes better 'cuz he plays 'bout 11 more mins. than Bass!!

Bass IMO is almost like Kurt Thomas except younger, & I thought that was the kinda player the Spurs were hoping to land in order to replace Orberto & Thomas!

Bass is a nice player, but redundant with Blair. Dice can cover centers better and gives us more of what we need to win right now.

As for the Mavs, the loss of Bass, then adding Gortat and Marion. I'm not seeing where they are getting better? Did not mention resigning Kidd for $9 million a year. Typical STUPID IDIOTIC cap management by Cuba. He'll bleed another $20 million in luxury taxes, at least, and still can't buy a championship!

Love it!

Forgot to mention Marion is past his prime and has the worst looking shot of any player in the league. I used to love it when he was with the Suns and he would chuck up an ugly looking 3 and hit it. That meant he would take and miss 5 more and we were on our way to the W!

not a great comparison. KT has high b-ball iq and is a great defender. KT's offense is pretty limited, he can hit an open jumper. his main offensive weapon is the offensive rebound or setting a screen.

bass is a poor defender, not sure about his IQ, and a better scorer. hes a good FT shooter and hes got a consistent jumper. hes decent in the post but wont score of an above average defender with any consistency.

i would definitely take bass over thomas but hes nowhere near mcdyess.

Some folks feel the need to correct any little perceived transgression.

OMG you started a similar thread, how dare you!! :nope

Important to remember we are all on here for fun:downspin:

and we have something very important in common :flag:

Pretty easy to ignore a post or thread you don't like, and you gotta love the way this place is hoppin a good 3 months before the season. It's electric, thank goodness football season will be here sooner to tide us over!

5 out of 5, bitches! :lol

From the start of the FA period:

Here's how it will play out:

Sheed to Boston
McDyess to SA
Varejao stays in Cleveland
Orlando steals Bass (but overpays for him)
Gortat to Dallas

...then, and only then, will the world take a chill pill and calm the fuck down. :lol

We will nab McDyess for something like 13.5/3yrs in a typically under the radar Spurs FO move.

Boston will overpay full MLE for Sheed and regret it as he plays lacksidasically off the bench and injuries to their Zimmer-frame guys close their trophy window.

Orlando will get good production from Bass, but realise that they made a major mistake in jettisoning Turk for Carter who will stagnate the Orlando offence and make guys like Lewis and Nelson unhappy.

Cuban will wake up on July 9 with a huge hangover and ask himself the question: "WTF just happened? How did I do it AGAIN? Yet another overpaid centre? Another great white hope who will put up 6/6 for $6mil/yr... this shit is worse than Dampier! I'm just a truly shitful GM!" He will then sell the team to oil barons from Russia.

http://spurstalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=130362&page=3&highlight=bucher+twitter

I think I may have overstated it a bit on Gortat - he'll probably be okay. I just like dissing Cuban... don't we all? :lol
