Blazers draft pick Mills breaks foot

The Blazers said Friday that Mills fractured the fifth metatarsal in his right foot during practice Thursday night. He will have surgery on his foot on Monday, the team announced.
A timetable for the point guard's return has not been determined.
"You never want to see a player get injured, but it is especially heart wrenching to see a young man go down on his first day of camp," Portland general manager Kevin Pritchard (http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?playerId=2710) said. "We'll do everything we can to help Patty get back on track to realize his NBA future."
After starring for Australia in the Beijing Olympics and for Saint Mary's in college, Mills was selected by the Blazers with the 55th overall pick in the NBA draft last month.
The 6-foot, 175-pound Mills averaged career highs of 18.7 points, 4.0 assists, 2.6 rebounds and 2.5 steals during his sophomore season with the Gaels before deciding to turn pro.
Thursday was Portland's first day of practice for the summer league, which starts Friday in Las Vegas. The Blazers open play Monday against Toronto.
The Blazers' roster for the summer league includes second-year guard Jerryd Bayless (http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?playerId=3417) and draft picks Jeff Pendergraph and Dante Cunningham.

I'm just glad the Spurs didn't get him...if Blair hadn't dropped, the Spurs were seriously considering picking this guy up.

Shitty couple of months for Mills. Had high expectations coming into the draft, falls deep into the second round, then breaks his foot. Hope things go better for him soon.

Poor Patty. Kid needs a jumpshot, but otherwise is a great talent. Very surprising to see him drop to #55, and now this.

If he ever gets a real shot he'll stick as a backup at the very least.

You seem to be misinformed... RC Said McClinton was going to be their pick at 37...

timvp had the Spurs picking Mills in his draft cheat sheet, thats probably why some people think that the Spurs were interested. I thought they would be too, he fits the mold that Pop likes with his backup PG's as well as the Australian connection with Brett Brown being head coach and Mills starting PG.

Hopefully he heals up and this doesn't bother his quickness etc. I really like his game, I think he has a future as a bench guy in the NBA. His quickness is such a weapon, and something like that can keep you in the NBA even if your other skills aren't that great.

It's possible the kid broke his foot by stepping on Pritchard's oversized ego.

Yes...I know...the Spurs changed their mind about Mills...going by all the draft boards, the Spurs led everyone to believe Mills was going to be the guy they were going with.
