It's a valid opinion. Kobe lost his superior status in Denver and he can never again enjoy that position he held before the rape. He's angry and bitter that he lost his "virginity" because of his gross recklessness. Even after the accusation he could still have refused to come down into the fray and join the common man, but, it was risk that held dire consequence of unspeakable degree. It was Colorado, not California. So, he sold his soul. Now "they" own him...and he's intelligent enough to realize that and it consumes and depresses him. His punishment isn't 20 to life in Colorado, that is his solace, but, the further he moves away from that event the more that solace fades and the more he's shown what he lost there and how comprehensive that loss is and will continue to be.
