Perhaps "a web-based, ad-supported version of Office 2010 to be offered at no cost" would have been a better subject.

Open office is still the best thing to happen since the .doc was invented. Use it, love it, enjoy it for free. :toast

Yeah I have been using it for years, but some people still prefer Office for certain things.

Microsoft is threatened by OpenOffice and google docs. If they have a free online version they can ensure that their file format remain in wide use. I dunno what Microsoft is trying to do exactly with the whole open xml standardization and such, but I'm sure its evil.

It's anything but open. The XML format they use for their docs already has 'proprietary extensions' to the language. Obviously, only MS knows how to decode those.
They're full of it. OO and Google Docs are basically a response to the many people that are tired with their monopoly.

and for people who are tired of the $400 price tag that accompanies ms office. it's fuckin' ridiculous to pay $400 for a word processor, spreadsheet, email client, and a bs database app. office is bs!

At work, some of us have no choice but to use MS Office. Outlook = email

But yea, this is a few yrs too late, isn't it? :rolleyes

i dont even know what this "google vs microshit" is all about anyhow... why google? sun has openoffice(office suite, free and better then anything google has online right now!) and opensolaris(freeOS better then the imaginary googleOS reported so far in the news).

why is there all this talk about google vs microshit when microshit is already getting stepped on by more demanding products, companies, etc?
