View Full Version : Thoughts on our beloved Mavs tonight

Well my friends, I'm disappointed that the Magic decided to pony up the cash and match Gortat. There's no need for anger at our beloved front office, I liked the decision to sign Gortat and am somewhat incredulous towards the fact that the Magic, with so much money tied up on bad contracts as is, decided to match such an expensive offer for what may be a 15-20 minute backup C for them next year.

We can't dismiss it as "it's only a 3ppg guy". All indications suggested Gortat would've been a serviceable rotational player for our boys in blue. Solid PER, phenomenal rebound rate, great per 40 minute numbers. etc etc.

But alas, it is time to move forward and God willing the guys in blue have a backup plan. This assures, to me, that Dampier cannot be traded except for a superior center, unless of course you were able to swing a deal w/ Howard for a center and used Dampier for a J-Ho substitute.

Alas, this is not a great day for the Mavs nation, but we shall prevail. Just as we've recovered from the refs stealing a title from us, just as we've recovered from Baron Davis turning into Jesus Christ in 2007, just as we've recovered from Kerr's fluke barrage of 3's ending our season while Dirk helplessly watched on the bench, we shall recover from this. Pain is weakness leaving the body, and so I must say with certainty that the Mavs fanbase is the most strong willed, dedicated fanbase in the NBA.

God bless you all :)

Let's sum up shall we?

- Isiah Thomas and Kiki Vandeweghe telling Don Carter to go fuck himself
- Derek Harper dribbling out the clock against the Lakers
- Roy Tarpley snorting his career away
- Jim Jackson and Jason Kidd fighting over Toni Braxton
- Dirk Nowitzki getting hurt in the 03 Conference Finals
- Terry failing to pick up Nash coming across midcourt
- 06 Finals
- Golden State
- Otis Smith playing chess while Donnie Nelson plays pin the tail on the donkey

It's just one long kick in the balls.

I hope our triangle of trust has a backup plan. Perhaps this situation can be salvaged? We still have some trade chips.

I dunno, I just dunno...

They got nothing in the way of trade chips left. They were seriously outmanuevered by Otis Smith. Either there was some sort of understanding that Smith went back on, or these guys are naive and utterly without guile. I couldn't understand why they would go out of their way to include Orlando in the Marion talks when their partcipation wasn't necessary to get the deal done. Or that they'd not at least match or exceed the offer to Bass and promise him a set amount of minutes. I figured they did their homework and wouldn't be doing that if they didn't know what the score was. It looks like that assumption and the way they read the situation was wrong.

Their best bet now is to resign Hollins and another stiff for the vet minimum, and target another wing like Marquis Daniels or somebody like that. Splitting the MLE between Big Baby and Marquis wouldn't be a terrible use of it.

pussyface.

The kicker is using the money the Mavs pushed to get the Marion deal done, and applying it to re-sign Gortat. It had to be some calculated deception on the part of the Magic's FO. But the Mavs FO really spiked the ball before reaching the end zone on this one.

Marion, Big Baby and Marquis Daniels would be a respectable summer...but certainly not sufficient for taking down the Lakers. I doubt we could get Big Baby anyways. I'm disappointed we're not getting Gortat, but he wouldn't have been sufficient either. I just liked him better because he was an upgrade at a position of need. The Mavs have upgraded at one position.

I suggest the Mavs solve the problem at C by playing Dirk there more.

C: Damp 23 minutes, Hollins 10 and Dirk 15.
PF: Dirk 21 minutes, Marion 17 and Humphries 11.
SF: Marion 15 minutes, Josh 23 and Quentin Ross 10.
SG: Josh 9 minutes, Terry 32 and Marquis Daniels 7.
PG: Kidd 32 minutes, Barea 10 and Marquis Daniels 6.

So the regular season rotation would be:

Dirk - 36 minutes
Marion - 32 minutes
Josh - 32 minutes
Kidd - 32 minutes
Terry - 32 minutes

Dampier - 23 minutes
Daniels - 13 minutes
Humphries - 11 minutes
Barea - 10 minutes
Ross - 10 minutes
Hollins - 10 minutes

If the problem is that Dampier is a defensive specialist that other teams don't have to guard, you can put Dirk at the 5 on offense and play Marion alongside him at the 4. I think you can get away with playing Dirk there 15-20 minutes a game. Not every team has a dominant big that can get him into foul trouble, and those that do will be guarded by Damp.

Screw Davis, trade for Okafor!

I've been lusting for Okafor for a while. We're talking about a 13/10/2 player with very good defense, somewhat underappreciated since he plays in Charlotte. He would be the perfect center for this team and I'd consider us serious championship contenders if we got him.

I was hoping the economy would put Charlotte in some sorta cost cutting mode but I don't see any Okafor rumors. It's somewhat pipedreamish anyway to acquire a 26 YO top 10 center in a salary dump (although Lakers got something similar in Gasol deal!).

I would even take back Rad or Mohammed's contract for Okafor.

scribb that Buckner buyout thing you mentioned. Is there a deadline for that, or can he still be bought out for $1 million even after he is able to be traded in multi player deals?

im sure there is a deadline just like Stack's was on Aug. 10th but havent heard as for Buck. I just know he cant be traded by himself 90 days after being acquired
