That's funny. Most people care nothing about W's and L's and everything about stats in the summer league.

ugly ball tonight, but nice win. Hill and Hairston were good. It was good to see Ian running the floor and getting boards, the 10 fouls not so great. Romel Beck can shoot, but his d was weak. Lasme was okay tonight, but it is the same old same old, Hill, Ian, Blair look like they will make the team. hairston is trying, and has a shot. McClinton again MIA. Beck deserves a chance in preseason. Karl looked good too, didn't expect that to happen nice three at the end.

Hairston may not have a relatively great shot like Mason or Finley, but he does things neither of them do, and I hope that's enough to get him some real minutes.

I'd honestly be surprised if Malik isn't ahead of Finley in the rotation by the end of the year, barring injury..
I'm not necessarily looking at what Hairston does right now..I'm looking at his improvements..he's clearly improved significantly from last year's Summer League to this year..this guy clearly has a good work ethic, he isn't a liability IQ-wise, and he has solid physical tools..
He needs a lot of work when it comes to ball-handling and passing, but that is also the case for the majority of bench SFs in the NBA that are known for their defense/athleticism..

So after two games, here is how the race to make the roster looks:
Blair: Made team - no doubt.
Hairston: Good so far - will make it to camp and then see what happens.
Gist: Questionable/Borderline - Overseas or Toros probably.
Beck: Decent offense/no defense - summer camp fodder.
McClinton: He's a brickhouse - not good so far.
Williams: Make it to training camp at least.
Lasme: Summer league fodder, might be upgraded to camp fodder.

He was a mixed bag. At first he tried to dribble through it. Eventually he tried to pass over it. After a while, the passing worked and led to layups.
It's kind of an unwritten rule not to throw fullcourt traps in freakin summer league so that true evaluations can be made. But I guess the Nuggets really wanted the win.

He looked best running the point. Too bad Newman had him at point for like three minutes. Taylor over McClinton at point guard is mind-boggling.
Taylor straight up fell down while dribbling at least thrice.
Taylor would make a great 6'5" PG... if he, you know, had PG skills.

a few points..
-Hill didn't handle the press well IMO, can't deny that..obviously his teammates had a part in that..I don't think it's a big deal TBH, he'll improve..the thing is, Hill is NEVER going to be a passing PG, it just isn't his style..I highly doubt Pop would care too..Pop wants him to be aggressive and have penetration ability, and he clearly does..that's the key with Hill..he's going to be a scoring PG that focuses on D, while doing other little things..he isn't going to be a good passer any time soon, and it really won't make a difference in our system IMO..
-I don't think the fouls with Ian will be as much of a concern as tonight..the majority of his fouls tonight were against the perimeter players, not the big men, and obviously the majority of the calls were phantom fouls or very ticky-tack..they don't make those calls in the NBA, unless you're a superstar going against a role player..
like I said before..the thing I'm gonna look for in Ian is improvement..I don't care how his numbers look at the end, I just wanna see game-to-game improvement as he shakes the rust off..
from game 1 to game 2, I saw a massive improvement..now next game, let's see if he continues to improve, even if it's just in minor aspects..
You have to take it into context as well. It's summer league. I don't think George was really thinking, or worrying about full-court pressure. You can also obviously tell no one else on the team were worrying either as they didn't come to ball or keep anyone in the backcourt for what, two more plays? As you said, Pop likes scoring PGs. Hill's work out there is learn the plays and be a shooting guard who can run the pick and roll -- even if it high as hell.
Actually, as a rookie, he's going to get dumb calls until he establishes himself. Agree though, those were some ridiculous calls. The woman ref has no clue.

The fouls were divided 30-30 with lots of bad calls on both ends. I think Denver got the better of them but it probably was close. The problem is that these refs called 1.5 fouls/minute. That makes the game entirely unwatchable. Dear God do we need Simmons ref academy because if any of these refs are the future;

Having him sit out was an agreement between the Spurs and his agent. Supposedly prior to the game, Blair wasn't even told the reason why he wasn't going to play. As of right after the game, Blair was still out of the loopn
I'm guessing he'll learn about it now. And it sounds like both sides are confident Blair will suit up again before summer league is over. Perhaps as soon as next game.

A smart one.
If he gets seriously injured, the Spurs aren't liable to pay him a dime. He actually put himself at risk in playing the first game, but helped himself out in terms of contract talks with his performance. Unfortunately, we have to remember this is a business and no one else is going to take care of you no matter what they say (i.e. Celtics Powe). I don't think we should pin anything against his character for sitting out. Besides, his contract should get done by the next game.

McClinton is not himself.... His stats shooting wise is similar to G. Hill's last year..... Not entirely sold on waiving him just yet.... Maybe a year in Europe would do him some good.
I like the numbers Lasme is putting up as well as Beck.... Not sold on Gist.... However I am curious to see what we can get with a Bonner and Finley package before making a decision on someone.
Overall, Blair will get his contract..... If Mahimni can stay healthy, he will be a factor..... Hopefully the front office can make a solid decision on the 13th-15th men on the bench in the event they are needed.

Spurs' Antonio Anderson scores 14 against Nuggets (http://blogs.mysanantonio.com/weblogs/spursworld/)
By Joe Alexander
Antonio Anderson scored 14 points in his first summer league appearance for the Spurs in Tuesday night's 78-76 victory over the Denver Nuggets. Anderson was 6 of 11 from the field and 1 of 3 on 3-pointers.
In case you haven't heard much about Anderson, the 6-foot-6 guard was part of a 2009 senior class at Memphis that won 137 games in its four seasons. Anderson averaged 10.2 points, 4.8 rebounds and 4.5 assists as a senior and the Tigers won the Conference USA title.
For the second straight game, George Hill had more made field goals than he had in the entirety of last year's summer league. Hill was 4 of 8 from the field in the first half and finished with 16 points.
Malik Hairston had 17 points and Ian Mahinmi had 12 points and 16 rebounds.

Didn't he get Anderson confused with Beck??
It's fixed now, but for a while the boxscore at NBA.com was showing Anderson with 14 and Beck with a DNP. Looks like Joe wrote his piece from looking at the bad boxscore.

Up until a while after the game, Beck was listed as a DNP and Anderson had his stats on the box score on NBA.com. Which really shows how much effort they put into this product they wanted me to pay $15 for.

Ian has a triple double if you count his fouls... hahaha
Good Point..... :lol
Fouls is not something you want double figures though.... He has to work on that..... I think he had 7 or 8 in the first game.
He is showing tendencies of being very foul prone which is concerning. This is just summer league. I would hate to see when he faces the top talent of the NBA..... He may foul out in five minutes......

Realistically he probably had 4 or 5 fouls in this game, the refs were calling tickytack fouls especially on Mahinmi, his last so called foul had nothing to do with him but I guess the refs wanted to reach a quota or something.

Report from the Cox Pavillion - Spurs vs. Nuggets
Finally got to sit behind the Spurs bench!!! Spurs fans were well represented tonight. I sat again with quite a few of them, all wearing Spurs merchandise. Peter Holt should be happy. Also a guy wearing a Spurs shirt won the dance off by default. Most fans in the arena were Spurs fans so we all cheered for him. lol
I thought the referees at the Spurs-Hornets game were bad, I didn't think it could get any worse. But the referees tonight proved me wrong. I understand they're also trying to get a job in the NBA, well it appears like they are failing miserably. Just putrid refereeing tonight. There was no flow to the game for either team because of the constant stoppages.
George Hill had a subpar game tonight. I had some Beno flashbacks when he kept turning the ball over while the Nuggets pressured him in the backcourt. Of course it didn't help that his teammates weren't helping at all while he was getting pressured.
Ian Mahinmi had such a great game. He was constantly moving his feet, hustling etc. I wish the guards would feed him the ball more so we can see more of his post moves. Most of the fouls called on him were totally bogus. But he does need to learn how to time his block attempts. During the 2nd half, it seemed like he was losing his concentration. The coaching staff and GHill kept yelling at him to tell him where to go. But overall, can't deny that he has talent and he'll only get better. I forsee a monster game from him on Thursday.
James Gist continues to get rim blocked and rejected on his dunk attempts over and over this SL. I don't know what's up with him but I would love to see "The Gist" from last SL. If he continues this play, he might go back to Europe for another year.
Jack McClinton continues to disappoint. I still have high hopes for him though. Also seems like he hurt his hand or something. I saw it wrapped during the game and while on the bench. Might be a reason why he's playing that way.
Malik Hairston had another great game. I still think he needs to improve his shooting a bit more but he's lighting up this game. Also he was hustling his butt off so props to him!
I guess everyone is on Rommel Beck's bandwagon again, but I'm not latching on anytime soon. He still can't dribble and caused costly turnovers because of it. And how could I forget that idiotic foul on Coby Karl. I think he will get a training camp invite because of his shooting but he'll get cut because he can't do much else.
Spurs fans kept calling for DeJuan Blair to play and was shot down. I came to the gym expecting to see him play especially since he was warming up with the team. I hope whatever is holding him up will get fixed soon.

In 07 and 08, Spurs second round picks (Williams and Hairston) were quite bad during SL. As a result, Spurs didn't offer them a single guaranteed $. They both came into the training camp with an one-year fully non-guaranteed contract and were waived at the end of the camp.
I guess that McClinton will need to show significantly more things in the 3 remaining SL games if he wants to get some guaranteed money from Spurs. If he doesn't play better, Spurs talk should be "we encourage you going in Europe to improve your game. If you don't want it, we will only offer you a fully non-guaranteed contract with a good chance of being waived at the end of the camp.".

I think there is maybe a little over reaction to Mclinton's game. I havent watched the game, but he must of been pretty bad in only 10 minutes for people to be writing him off even after it. I know the opinions are coupled with the first game he had, but its still way too early.
I said this about him before, i dont think SL is suited for his style of game. Hes a shooter more than anything. He will make his living of all-stars like Manu, TP and Duncan getting him open looks - i dont think he can find those looks in the SL.
Having said that, he still should be showing a little more given the competition, but im still confident in his ability to make the team. Im pretty much scrapping this second game since he only played 10 minutes, most at the PG (judging by reading the thread) - you cant expect a shooter to find a rythm in spot minutes. And ill also look at the positives and say he got 4 assists in only 10 minutes.

That's terrible with a capital TURRR.
Surprised to read that Hill struggled with a press.
I remember him having no problems against Lindsey Hunter when he applied one man full court pressure on George last season so you would assume he would have no problems against a zone full court press.

It honestly had more to do with his teammates doing nothing to help him. Instead of trying to get open, they just stood where they were with their arms open waiting for a pass with a man on them.

SL 2008:
Malik Hairston continues to disappoint.
SL 2009:
Malik Hairston had another great game.
Jack McClinton continues to disappoint.
SL 2010 prediction:
Jack McClinton had another great game.
despite Malik's poor showings in the 2008 SL (he improved significantly at the end of the SL), it was recognizable that there is something, that could be turned into NBA quality.
IMO the same with McClinton.

Agreed, I don't think SL is a good showcase for his abilities. That said, I'd still like to see them run some plays for him off screens, curls, etc.

Perhaps it's selective memory for me, but I don't recall Malik Hairston "disappointing" during summer league last year. He was a non-factor much of the time, and he didn't put up numbers, but he had enough bright spots to convince me that he could be an NBA player. When Jack McClinton dunks on Yao Ming or stuffs Tayshaun Prince in the low post, my opinion of him might start to change.
If McClinton can't contribute to a summer league team against summer league talent, then he's not going to be an NBA player.
