RICHARD JEFFERSON LEAVES BRIDE AT THE ALTAR (http://www.nypost.com/seven/07152009/news/regionalnews/manhattan/richard_jefferson_leaves_bride_at_the_al_179316.ht m)

Now that's a flagrant foul.

Former New Jersey Net star Richard Jefferson bailed on his stunning fiancée -- pulling the plug on his posh Manhattan wedding at the 11th hour without even alerting some of the guests, The Post has learned.

The cold-footed forward's decision to ditch onetime Net dancer Kesha Ni'Cole Nichols was so last-minute that some of his oblivious friends had already shown up last Saturday at the swank Mandarin Oriental in Columbus Circle for the $2 million wedding that never happened.

Jefferson -- who was traded in June to the San Antonio Spurs -- dumped Nichols just before the weekend, according to sources.
She immediately called her family and friends to say the ceremony was off.
But Jefferson waited much longer, his friends told The Post.

"He called about two hours before the wedding. It was nuts," said one Jefferson pal.

He never showed up at the hotel, but "all his boys were there," the friend said. "He gave his best friend the Black Amex [credit card] for the night."
Jefferson's guests made good use of the credit card to party on their pal's dime.

Nichols did check in to the hotel on what was to have been her wedding day, and was upgraded to a suite on the 45th floor with a king-sized bed and a Central Park view, according to a source at the Mandarin.

The would-be bride was stunned, but "not entirely caught off-guard," by Jefferson's unsportsmanlike conduct, according to a family friend.
"She just wants to keep this as quiet as possible and move on. She's doing just fine," a Nichols family insider said.

I think its messed up, but if he wasn't ready or finally realized he didn't want to, well its his decision. You can't fault him. Marriage is suppose to be for life and he wasn't ready for that I guess. Better to call it off now than later.

I'm assuming there is some backstory there, but even if there isn't. . . sometimes people get engaged thinking this is what they want and in the end realize it's not. You get to know people better, situations or circumstances change, or you change. It sucks to call it off right before, but better to do that and lose out on some money than to go through when you are unsure.

We don't really need all this sensational gossip-rag b.s. about the Spurs players in the Spurs forum. Like with all the Tony/Eva drama before they got married, this kind of stuff belongs in The Club (if anywhere).

It would have been meaner to go through with it if he wasn't feelin' it. Like the old song says, sometimes "you've got to be cruel to be kind".

I believe that custom dictates that if the man breaks it off, she gets to keep the ring (or sell it or flush it), if she wants to.

Spurs' Jefferson gives dumped fiancee six-figure settlement (http://www.sportingnews.com/nba/article/2009-07-16/spurs-jefferson-gives-dumped-fiancee-six-figure-settlement)
Sporting News staff reports

San Antonio Spurs forward Richard Jefferson has given ex-fiancee Kesha Ni'Cole Nichols a six-figure settlement to help her move on after his last minute wedding cancellation, the New York Post reports.

Jefferson ended his five-year relationship with Nichols shortly after a tense Fourth of July weekend by sending her an e-mail. Previous reports said he told her that he did not want to get married two hours before the scheduled wedding time, but during an interview on the Howard Stern Show Thursday morning on Sirius Satellite Radio, Jefferson said he told his friends and family of the split on Monday, and that Nichols' friends and family were told Tuesday - five days before the wedding.

Jefferson said he chose to break up with her via e-mail because "sometimes you might write an e-mail to get your thoughts down right," according to the Post.

On Wednesday the Post reported that the cancellation was not in time to prevent guests from showing up, and Jefferson gave friends his American Express card to use for an evening of entertainment. On the Stern show, however, Jefferson said that he did not give his friends his AmEx card.

Jefferson also denied reports that he spent $2 million on the wedding, telling Stern he spent about a quarter of that.

Jefferson also denied to the Post rumors that he is gay.

"I'm not gay," Jefferson said. "That couldn't be any further from the truth. I have nothing to hide."
