Odom hubbub has Lakers looking for big man (http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-lakers-odom16-2009jul16,0,7776937.story)
Now that the Lakers have reneged Lamar Odom’s potential deal, the team has a little money to spend. It’s apparently looking for a big man through a sign-and-trade with Odom or a straight trade with another player. The list of possibilities for the Lakers is long and includes such fellas as Stromile Swift, Sean May, Jarron Collins, Mikki Moore, and Juwan Howard. Meanwhile, Odom still has an offer on the table from the Heat (http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/miami-heat/sfl-miami-heat-odom-s071509,0,13959.story) that is worth $5.9 million, one third the amount Odom made this year, it is thought that Odom is purely using Miami to help leverage his Laker contract higher. Looks like he doesn’t need to worry about that now. (Los Angeles Times, South Florida Sun-Sentinel)

Lakers technically are still the team to beat but with Ariza out and now it looks like Odom is gone, the future is looking brighter and brighter for the Spurs. Artest is a good addition but he has to learn the system but has shown to be injury prone. They also lose the threat of Odom's ball handling as a big even though he was thier most inconsistent player.

I'd say trade them the rights to Splitter, but Gasol is from Spain and might tip them off that it's not actually in the United States. Splitter looks a lot better if they don't know that part.

I don't want Odom here but I bet the house on him not siging. Bridges were burnt when Mitch pulled the offer off the table. Odom know he has a ring and now it's payday. He showed he will not going for anything less than $10 million. They had almost $9 mill on the table and he didn't take it.

problem is, that noone will pay more than that...I just dont see it happening...I think he is trying to use Miami to put pressure on LA...maybe they bite, mybe he will give up...I just think, he is staying

Those are some really ugly options for the Lakers

They are! And Drew Gooden wasn't even mentioned. He is on some blacklist or so far under the radar he's below ground. Jarron Collins? Mikki Moore? Those guys can't even rebound. And Sean May is an injury riddled pig.

Heat targeting both Boozer and Odom

By Adrian Wojnarowski (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/expertsarchive;_ylt=Aq4gxwRABBBDUEzOv2sMJ5bTjdIF?a uthor=Adrian+Wojnarowski), Yahoo! Sports Jul 15, 11:06 pm EDT LAS VEGAS – Pat Riley has listened to Dwyane Wade (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/3708/;_ylt=Aioo7lGKJkiksimwUBM8DaDTjdIF)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/3708/news;_ylt=Alw5sgUXCoohkKmwskxM1WrTjdIF) express his unease with the Miami Heat (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/teams/mia/;_ylt=AmcHy3hG6xG5nZ0UbSLA0fLTjdIF) sitting out the Eastern Conference’s arms race this summer. As the Boston Celtics (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/teams/bos/;_ylt=Aq1ps8JcEmCGXhUyIqSrQQrTjdIF), Cleveland Cavaliers (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/teams/cle/;_ylt=AonH8BcSAWIaN4restNG_GjTjdIF) and Orlando Magic (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/teams/orl/;_ylt=Ahh8b1Iyx0.0pvx7n5a2TALTjdIF) elevated themselves as championship contenders, the Heat president sold his superstar on patience, promising a plan to surround him with talent for the long run.

Now, the Heat are working furiously to deliver Lamar Odom (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/3327/;_ylt=Akfzv5yMlZn09bxAaBikeY_TjdIF)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/3327/news;_ylt=AqU0ycLb9opK7ovIfT5vWFbTjdIF) and Carlos Boozer (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/3632/;_ylt=AgGVqajj2Hf7oB0BOAJTqIDTjdIF)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/3632/news;_ylt=AmZe5CPRQdgavez3ufOgk9HTjdIF) to the shores of Biscayne Bay. The Heat are trying to sell Odom on a five-year, $34 million contract at the mid-level exception, and a league executive with knowledge of the talks says Miami has also hatched a three-way proposal with the Utah Jazz (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/teams/uth/;_ylt=AldmwibRF4qdk7ZvSBUycwPTjdIF) and Memphis Grizzlies (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/teams/mem/;_ylt=Aovp8sQPnca9k34.2iZ3jOTTjdIF) to secure Boozer.
The essentials of a possible deal would include Miami sending forward Udonis Haslem (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/3765/;_ylt=AvE5FcmlP3.ApexnEE8BTWDTjdIF)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/3765/news;_ylt=Am0u8OV9xdxlN0hEleaPtNjTjdIF) and Dorell Wright to Utah. Because Memphis is under the cap, Utah could move Wright’s $2.8 million salary to the Grizzlies and save itself approximately $5.6 million with salary and luxury-tax payments. Memphis would probably get cash and picks for its trouble. The Heat would have to send one more small contract to make the math on the salary exchange work.

Miami could pay Boozer his $12.7 million salary this season and own his Bird rights to sign him to an extension next summer.

The deal isn’t considered imminent, but the Jazz are working hard to find a suitable trade for Boozer. Utah is determined to match the Portland Trail Blazers (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/teams/por/;_ylt=Au2V0gw8xZ7dbWwxBGWM3vvTjdIF)’ $32 million offer sheet for restricted free agent Paul Millsap (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/4175/;_ylt=AtRKYTKDeBlRxv8a.2s77qnTjdIF)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/4175/news;_ylt=Ain4MJ7Hx6HLFDpKAEY80YrTjdIF). Utah has until the end of the week to match or lose the young power forward to the Blazers. Most league executives believe that Utah will match the offer, regardless of whether they’ve moved Boozer.

Portland is still trying to pry Tayshaun Prince (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/3621/;_ylt=ApKn9mG08KeCHMFpcnA_OBTTjdIF)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/3621/news;_ylt=AsdMt84s3XhKKL_Te6MTPyTTjdIF) out of Detroit in a three-way deal with Utah, but Pistons president Joe Dumars hasn’t shown an inclination to move Prince and extend Boozer’s contract, league sources say. Several league executives are dubious of Boozer as a $14 million-a-year player, which his agent, Rob Pelinka, has told teams it will take to sign him to an extension. Miami could be the suitor willing to pay it.

The Los Angeles Lakers (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/teams/lal/;_ylt=AjYax.XjWm6Le4iFNlo_NVXTjdIF)’ standoff with Odom is still fluid, but a source close to Odom insists he would probably only leave L.A. for Miami, not the Dallas Mavericks (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/teams/dal/;_ylt=AkBlutW2VRVl6KXiL6gdqrDTjdIF), who are also pursuing him. Odom’s agent is trying to get a five-year, $45 million deal out of the Lakers, who have offered four years and $36 million

actually Odom leaving might not be as absurd as thought if recent reports about only 3 years $27 million offered are true. That makes taking the MLE for 5 years not a ridiculous option for Odom if he really wants a 5 year contract.

All this said he probably goes back to the Lakers

agreed. odom's camp is doing everything that it can to regain some leverage and force the lakers to bid against themselves. the lakers, meanwhile, are full of it with their contract coming "off the table." if odom came to them and said he wanted that deal now, cup-check would whip that deal back out so fast that it would give him whiplash.

unfortunately, ESPN (who has never been great about it, but has gotten really bad over the last year+) is treating every angle/rumor as if it's gospel.

If Manu was as injured as you said he should never have played. That's pure stupidity on his part and by your entire organization.

The odds of us seeing a healthy Spur team are starting to look like that of the Rockets.

You can't pull the injury card when your main cogs are on the downhill of their careers. It's just something that happens with age, both Duncan and Manu are old and their bodies can't take a brutal NBA regular season and a deep post season.

galvatron3000

Could Odom return to a former NBA employer? It is not a foregone conclusion that Lamar Odom and his agent are going to remain in LA as once thought. Enter Pat Riley and the Miami Heat and team he is familiar with and had a bit of success as an emerging Dwayne Wade broke out a few years ago. Also in the equation is a soon to be traded Carlos Boozer in which the Heat are said to be looking to add also. Throw in Wade, Beasley, Boozer, Odom and possibly a trade for Haslem to bring in some depth and you could possibly have a formidable team. Albeit, Wade and Boozer are somewhat injury prone. Looks like the Lakers pulling the offer off the table will backfire or atleast it's possible. Could Kobe be fuming about this situation when he refused to opt out in hope to defend his title? More in the coming days I'm sure.

Age does not correlate perfectly with physical health for all human beings.

Kobe Bryant is a physical specimen. He has kept in tip top shape his entire life and has showed very little signs of breaking down. He played in all 82 games last season. Gasol is very durable as well.

Neither Ginobili nor Duncan have shown any indication in the last two seasons that their bodies can take the beating of a brutal NBA season and a deep post season. That won't magically get better as they age even more. The proof is in the pudding, Duncan is sitting out back to back games. Tell me what athlete in great physical shape would do that?
